Josh Olsen Tells Us What's Up With The Wizard of Oz!

The writer of the new The Wizard of OZ film chimes in to let us know if the new film will be twisted or not?

It really is to bad that Josh Olsen (never heard of him) sent me a letter instead of that guy over at AICN Merrick. Alas, he did not. But I got a hold of the letter anyway:

"This is Josh Olson, the writer of the Oz sequel for Warners that you referenced in your piece today. If you want to verify that it's really me, just tell Harry that I have fond memories of fantastic barbecue with him, his lovely wife, and his father in Austin last year, as well as Harlan Ellison and his wife, Susan. We were in town to promote the documentary about Harlan.

I wanted to clear up some confusion and misinformation in the piece. You can feel free to post this, if you'd like:
------
Just to clarify - the Oz project I wrote wasn't "twisted" in any way. McFarlane's involvement with the project and the fact that his line of toys live up to that epithet has led to a lot of confusion in the last couple years. The pitch I sold to Warners was entirely my own, based on events in several of the Baum books, combined with a story of my own creation. The entire project began when McFarlane approached the producers with the idea of doing a new version of Oz. For various reasons, they chose not to go with his approach, however, and in a conversation with the producers, I told them I thought a sequel to Oz was a fascinating - if daunting - idea. I spun a few half-baked ideas in the meeting that they really liked, then went off to craft a pitch for a film, which we then took to Warners and sold. Mine is more of a sequel that was - or was at least intended to be - a return to the magical land of Oz that would work well for both fans of the MGM classic, and fans of Baum's amazing books. My nieces and nephew are always complaining that they aren't allowed to see Uncle Josh's work, and I wanted to do something the whole family could enjoy. If you want to think of it in terms of what's out there, I was going for a Harry Potter tonality. The last I heard, they were looking for writers to make it funnier, which is fine. You don't enter into a project like a sequel to The Wizard of Oz for a major studio believing you'll absolutely be the only writer on the project.

But for the record, the project we sold Warners on was in no way based on the Twisted Land of Oz figures. There was no bondage Dorothy, and no gigantic Toto monster. I've never met Todd, never heard his take, and we had one brief telephone conversation after I sold the pitch in which no details of the project were discussed. To be honest, I don't even know if he's read my script.

Oz was a labor of love for me - an attempt to give something back to a creator who had such a big impact on my childhood - as well as one hell of an intimidating job. If you can write "I think we're in Oz" for a character named Dorothy Gale, and not have at least a moment's rush of terror and shock at the size of the mountain you're climbing - not to mention your own hubris - you're lying.

I'm proud of my work on Oz, and my experience working with Basil Iwanyk and everyone at Warners was nothing but exceptional. I look forward to the next one.

Thanks for letting me clarify.

Best,

Josh Olson"

There you go. No Twisted Land of Oz stuff in this new version. It sounds like this guy knows what he is talking about and above that has respect for the source material. The Wizard of Oz is such a treasured classic held by most fans as one of the best fantasy movies to ever hit the big screen that Warner Brothers is going to take their sweet time and develop this movie with quality. As they should.

Am I the only one who remembers Return To Oz with Fairuza Balk? This wouldn't even be a sequel. Unless they are ignoring RtO completely.

Well, at least someone is keeping Mikes legacy alive...

I was hoping it would be twisted. We already have a great Oz movie..thats all we need unless this movie wants to try something different.

I agree with Ror01. We already have a great OZ movie...the original!!! Why don't they start moving on to something that has to do with OZ that hasn't been made into a movie yet. Maybe The Wicked series? :) That would leave that whole series open for a trilogy of movies and would be more adult, without being tasteless.

Im really not sure on this project. We just had a sequel in Sci-Fi's "Tin Man". Im sure this will be a different take with original story and all but why not start from the beginning and make all the books ala Harry Potter? Oz can be the American Harry Potter if done well. Can it compete with the original film? HELL NO. But Warner is not going to try and make another musical are they? So just start over with a faithful book re-telling.

It amazess me how film creators will tell stories of projects influanced or derived of other sources when many audiance members haven't seen the original. In truth, Watchman would have never happen if Moore and Gibbons didn't want to tell a alternate superhero story from the then JLA and Avernger theme that was understood. Wheres the JLA, JSA, Avengers, Defenders, Invaders, etc. etc. film? The depth of Watchman is lost without that understanding. We as comic readers understand but others do not.

You know what's wierd is that they actually already made a sequel to Wizard of Oz. It was called "Return to Oz and it was really really wierd. It was artsy and low budget.

It wasn't very good really IMHO, so I am glad someone is doing something else with it.

I loved Return to Oz when I was a kid, but has been about ten maybe fifteen years since I saw it. Almost don't want to watch it again, because I might hate it as an adult.

Had that happen with Time Bandits - didn't hate it, but man had the childhood luster worn off. I love and appreciate Gilliam's style, but it seemed like I could've made that movie with the bums at the salvation army, and the stuff in my garage.

I hated the "Sifi" OZ - Tin Man. Bought it on dvd because it seemed like a good deal and was like how can you go wrong with anything OZ? I like Zoey Deschanel, and a few of the other people in that, but it was just awful - poorly directed, bad effects... Could barely sit through the first disc without falling asleep (I did watch it all, but that kept happening lol). Only really cool thing about it was the Tin Man concept, and I'm not sure if that was in Frank Baum's original books.

I'd love to see a well made, well directed, good story, great acted, big budget, tastefully done sequel to the Original. With todays effects, it could have the potential to match if not exceed the first one, imo.

@Keven - Yeah what happened to ogSupermike, we are going to have to start calling him that now or Supermike1 or something. From what I have read it seemed like he got banned. By the way, I'm new, but have been reading you guys for a long time.

Supermike2's just not like the real thing - as funny as it is, the grammar's still not as bad. Plus he never would've used a dash. His sentences (if you want to call them that), should I say his paragraphs were just complete run on sentences with no grammar or punctuation at all in broken English. But he had character, gotta give him that.

48&2...lol I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Tin Man. God that was horrid.

And as for Supermike2, you know what's tricky about that situation is that Supermike doesn't write the same way as he speaks.
When I was watching him gesticulate and hyperventilate on his stupid videos, I noticed that his speech was a lot better than his writing.

But Supermike2 kind of writes how the real Supermike speaks. So it's either a clever prankster trying to sound like Supermike or it is the real deal, but he's just trying to write more conversationally.

hmmmmmm

I could enjoy this. And though it isn't actually important to the article I feel the need to proclaim my love for Harlan Ellison.
