Legolas Wants Back Into Middle Earth!

Orlando Bloom wants to reprise the role that put him on the map as the Elvish warrior Legolas in the upcoming hit 'The Hobbit.'

'The Hobbit' has yet to start actually casting anyone, true, certain people have auditioned but no roles have been cast. This is why Orlando Bloom decided to drop Peter Jackson an email:

"I shot an e-mail to Pete and I said, 'You know, if you want me to don the blonde wig and pointy ears again, I'd be honored to do it,'" Bloom told MTV News. "He said, 'Well, we'll see.'"

Obviously Legolas was not in 'The Hobbit' but it is not out of the realm of possibility that Bloom could reprise his role as Legolas or play his father, Thranduil. Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in the LOTR trilogy, has stated that Jackson and Del Toro are looking for ways to incorporate characters from the LOTR trilogy into 'The Hobbit.' Word is that they are even trying to incorporate characters that were not in the novel for the big screen.

I trust Jackson with what he has done with the first trilogy. But please don't load this cannon up with a barrage of unnecessary characters just because you know the movie's marketing will be more successful. Cameo's are cool but also annoying when not needed. Other then that, can we see this movie move forth already?

I say Mel Gibson for Bard!!! If you don't remember Bard, he's the human that shot down Smaug. That guy had some beady eyes to find that one missing scale!

He sucks. He knows he is only good when he is all made up in some period piece and he is only expected to interact with dwarfs and strange sea creatures. Booo. But he was kool as legolas.

Orlando Bloom is hurting for work, of course he would do this. Right now he couldn't get a tv ad for herpes.

Superdog-I notice you say the same thing in all Hobbitt posts-whats up?

Dear God, can they screw with the continuity of the book anymore!? They talk more about the LOTR characters more than they do the Hobbit! Have the producers hired anybody for the dwarves yet?

I love Peter Jackson's take on the books, but Deltoro needs to stay with slasher and monster films, his specialty. This news is just insulting to the Tolkien's legacy!

dogs@ cause every hobbit story is about a delay......casiting, writing, location....always delay delay delay....theres something going on behind the scenes that we dont know about that is pushing this movie further and further off.....therefore i believe it will never happen.

He;s useless. But her seems like a nice fella. The only think I'v seen him in that didn't make me give the screen the finger was LOTR, and he was only just passable in that. Legolas was my favorite character in the book and I had to endure Bloom's wishy washy piss ant take on him.

i liked him a lot in Fellowship, but he was a little too hokey-ish in the others.

but other than that, of course he wants in, he hasn't done anything in a long time that i know of

Bropous: I'm glad to see that there are others here who feel as I do. I'm also glad to see other Tolkien fans. The Hobbit has been one of my favorite books since I first read it in high school many years ago. I completely agree with what you're saying.

This whole thing really concerns me, between the addition of unnecessary characters, cutting back on the dwarves (I hadn't heard about this one- anyone too stupid to keep the dwarves straight should stick to watching Will Ferrell movies and other b-grade drivel), and bloating the whole thing to two movies when ONE will do the job just fine.

As I understand it, the Tolkien family was VERY reluctant to allow The Hobbit to be filmed because they were savvy enough to realize that Hollywood would f it up. I hope they can pull the plug if they see it happening. I'd love to see The Hobbit on film, but only as the story written by Tolkien, not some two-bit hack who thinks he can do it better.

They have to realize that one of the biggest selling points of LOTR was sticking close to the source material. Some adjustments will have to be made but it needs to be minimal and purely for the sake of translating to film.

Hey guys, I wanted to try looking at Cap casting from a different perspective. Check it out:

If I remember correctly, this movie is supposed to show us what Gandalph was up to durring the times he was absent from the book. If this is the case, wouldn't it allow them to include just about anybody in this movie?

Um...

I Actually READ THE LOTR NOVELS Before I went to see the movies at the show...

That was Years ago but if I recall
Legolas isn't in the Hobbit.

Sorry but...He needs to just go ahead and do Pirates, recast his Elizabeth and keep on stepping.

Like I said...its been Years since I've read those books but Legolas just isn't in the Hobbit.

The Hobbit featured Bilbo, Gandolph, and a Bunch of Dwarfs as the the Main Cast of Good guys.

Gollum is there...

We should see some footage of Sauron and or his Eye in his Empire being built or something...

But Legolas isn't a part of this adventure...

I mean...it would only be like a brief appearence of him with Elves but just as a breif mention just to see Elves since Tolken describes them in that book. But they have no Major Role in this Story..that would have to be about it for them to stay TRUE to the Story like the other movies.

@ hawksblues

the hobbit is a prequel to LOTR. it takes place when Bilbo is young. like Nubax said, its Bilbo, Gandolf, Gloin/Gimli's father, and some other dwarves for the most part. the Hobbit isn't about Gandolf's time when he was away in the books...its about Gandolf, and Bilbo's adventure before Frodo and crew came along.

i also agree with Nubax, legolas, aragorn, and many others shouldn't be in it at all, it would serve no purpose. possibly Gimli, only because he's the son of Gloin, but even then, only breifly

Bloom wants back in... and I want to fk Natalie Portman.

Neither of us is gonna get what we want, but at least I'm aware that my dream is out of reach. Someone should tell this prick to join us in the 21st century, how many fkn period piece movies does one guy need to do?

CDB: I know, I've read The Hobbit many times. I'm saying that I have read somewhere that they are going to tell the story of the Hobbit, but they are also going to include Gandolphs adventures while he is away from Bilbo and the Dwarves.

If they do this then they can really incorperate anyone they want to fill in the story.

For the record, I didn't say this is what they should do. It's what I have read they are going to do.

Sky, there is a Hobbit Graphic Novel yes.

I don't see a problem with taking a few liberties with dealing with what happened while Gandalf was off on his own adventures, the hunt for Gollum etc. The LOTR's movies didn't stick nearly 100% to the source but they were still fantastic adaptations.

How about a compromise, Legolas is present for the scene with his father Thranduil; thus establishing the much sought after continuity that Hollywood seems kind of gaga over since Fury showed up in IM. Give him a line at most... I'm sure he would be cloaked and he could say his line and pull back his hood; nice dramatic reveal. There's your shot for the trailer and folks(girls) go home happy because he's got nice cheek bones and pretty hair.

I guess what I'm saying is make him a cameo in the sticktest sense. Use him to establish a continuity between the films, but for goodness sake don't add him to the main storyline. I'm with a great many of you in that this should be about Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin. These are your focal characters.

If the filmmakers really want to show some hard continuity between LOTR and The Hobbit; show the scene where Gandalf finds his sword (Glamdring/Foehammer), make certain you get Hugo Weaving back for Elrond and have him explain the secrets of the map Thorin carries (I believe that happened in the book), show Thorin giving Bilbo the shirt of mithril rings. If they hit details like those and you combine them with the finding of the ring and the scene in Gollum's cave; then I think viewers will have more than enough continuity to keep them (us) happy.

Honestly, after thinking about it I have realized that "The Hobbit" should really be similar in tone (IMHO) to the The 13th Warrior. It may not be everyone's favorite movie (though it is one of mine) but the stories share a great many parallels.

Bilbo is this very out of his element and out of place character thrust into an adventure he doesn't fully want to undertake. He joins this band of warriors who are all from a culture completely foreign to his own. However his skills compliment there's and through trials and combat they form a sort of kinship. Bilbo becomes a reluctant hero and takes part in something that is greater than himself. He returns home a more complete character/person for having undertaken the voyage. That's pretty much what happens to Antonio Banderas' character in The 13th Warrior... (wow, no wonder I like it so much?)

Anyways, just thought I'd share my thoughts on it.

If you read the appendixes in Return of the King there is a lot in there about what Aragorn was doing at the time that Bilbo was on his adventure. So I could see him in the movie but at no time is Legalos mentioned at all.

He was certainly alive at that time as he mentions in the book that he is much older than Aragorn who is 87 in LOTR. In fact it is likely that Legalos is probably a few thousand years old.

The chasing of Smeagal after Bilbo gets the ring didn't happen until after the battle of five armies. I doubt the film will go much beyond that battle.

An elf prince does make a brief audience with the gang when they are captured in mirkwood... but Bloom is just hankering for work after busting his acting muscle on those priates films.

Sidekick: these are good suggestions, and a way to establish that link between the stories that Hollywood seems to love so much without signficantly altering the story. There are certainly "hard links" between The Hobbit and LOTR that could and should be shown.

The main thing that I hope comes from all of this is that people who have never read The Hobbit go find a copy of it and read it. It's one of my favorite books ever, and I think a lot of people here would enjoy it.
