Peter Jackson Tells Us Which LOTR Characters Will Return In The Hobbit

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them!

Finally a chunk of news. MTV cornered Peter Jackson and he answered the question that has been on everyone's minds. Which LOTR characters will return and have a role in 'The Hobbit'? This from MTV:

"Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," explained the filmmaker, who is executive-producing the flick and writing the screenplay. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett."

Sweetness! No Legolas or Aragorn which is fine. It would have been cool to see them in the back ground but not necessary. Peter goes on to explain:

"In some respects, it's a prequel," Jackson said of the flick, which he plans to begin filming in mid-2010. "In book terms, the world of 'The Hobbit' takes place 60 years before 'The Lord of the Rings,' as it was written by Tolkien. So, not a lot of the characters actually feature, because they weren't around yet."

Rejoice I say to you. A filmmaker who actually is sticking to the source material! SHOCK! But a pleaseant shock.

Peter offered a rundown of what the currant state of affairs is on 'The Hobbit':

"Guillermo Del Toro is the director of 'The Hobbit' — we're producing it for him — and I'm involved in the scriptwriting, which I love," he explained. "Screenwriting is my favorite part of the whole process. I'm very happy being one of the writing team on 'The Hobbit,' and we've written the first script. It's two movies, and we've written the first script, which the studio responded well to. And we're now halfway through the second script."

"At this rate," he said, "we're on target to begin shooting the first half of next year."

Say it again!! WHAT!! OK!! YEAYAH!!

Does Peter anticipate any casting problems with the three who will return?

"They are elves, so once again, in the realm of Middle-earth, they're immortal, they don't age," he said of Galadriel and Elrond, the only returning "LOTR" main roles besides Gandalf in his script. "We have a process that would start with showing them the script. We're not [beginning] any official process until we have the 'official' script that they can read."

That would be a big NO. Off course they will return, why in hell wouldn't they. These roles are their most popular by far. I can't wait to see more Gollum. Bring it on!!!

Does anyone know if Andy Serkis is reprising his role as Smeagol/Gollum?

I've been hearing about this movie forever, it's had a lot of stops and starts. I wish they would just start filming already.

i heard (a long time ago) that it was pretty much a given that mckellen would return as gandalf and serkis would return as gollum. it seems to me like an obvious choice, especially considering that, although andy serkis is a much better known actor now that the lotr trilogy was made, he's still not being cast left and right like, say, ryan reynolds. i haven't heard anything recently, though, which sort of worries me. and trust me, i've looked.

on a related note, i anticipate the 'riddles in the dark' scene with gollum and bilbo to be one of the creepiest, skin-crawliest scenes in movie history. i'm not a huge fan of del toro (yet), but p.j. can do it.

Yeah Smaug will be awesome. I'v also heard that serkis will reprise his role, it seems awhile ago that I heard that but I cant see anyone else being Gollum. No way. That one is to obvious and Peter knows it.

I can't wait for these movies. They're easily my most anticipated movies of the new decade. The only thing that would be more exciting would be if they started making movie's based on R.A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt series. :)

I just hope everyone reprises their roles (with the exception of Ian Holm of course.) :)

Maybe Aragorn will be in the 2nd movie......aren't they planning on bridging the gap between The Hobbit & LOTR? If they are, it would make sense for him to show up somewhere in there.

Runefyst - 12/9/2009, 9:58 AM
@gtrman - Me too, it would be amazing. And imagine how Menzoberranzan would look on the big screen? So much potential for good movies in those books. :) Or even a good TV series.

Its a pity that we wont see characters like Aragorn but at least this means they're sticking closely to the source material rather than doing what Fox did with Wolverine, throwing in a bunch of cameos with characters who just shouldnt be there!!

Im just throwing this out there so tell me what you think? I'm willing to bet that Peter Jackson is going to put Aragorn in the second Hobbit film showcasing his hunt for gollum with gandalf. Just a hunch. The fan made stuff was pretty good and I think it created a demand. Offcourse Peter isnt talking about the second movie sooooo, I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/9/2009, 10:10 AM
@Josh - Yeah, sticking to the source material is always the best choice. I wouldn't be sad if I didn't see Aragorn. Especially since we get to see a shitload of dwarves! And a dragon! :)

@gtrman - Yeah, if they did any trilogy, it would have to be Icewind Dale......but there are some other really good ones as well. My fave has probably been the Hunters Blades trilogy. Obould is one've my fave characters from the whole series. :)

I'd also love to see Pwent, the Bouldershoulder brothers, Entreri, SO many good characters to bring to live in that series. :)

Yeah id like to see Aragorn and the hunt for Gollum actually. I mean, purists can moan all they like but it happens in the book, we just don't see it..so whats wrong with showing it in the movie? Nothing I tells ya!

I read the book and there’s no Aragon in it, so he shouldn’t be in the movie.

I luv this news, but have no idea what the original HOBBIT stories are (Never read the book or books?)

Is it just like LOTR'S or will it be less EPIC in scale!?

Help me out lol, but all i gotta say is, if its half as good as the LOTR movies we're all in for a [frick]ing treat!

i think i'm the only fantasy/lotr geek that just didn't like pan's labyrinth. there was just nothing to it but showy makeup, i felt. and i have to admit, i've never actually made it the whole way through either of the hellboy films. i've tried a couple times, but something just turns me off.

but again, i'm keeping a totally open mind with the hobbit, and i'm ready to be converted. i'm sure if i had seen king kong and all of p.j.'s zombie flicks before lotr i would have said the same thing about him. and then lotr happened.

I am pretty sure Elrond is not Hugo Weaving's biggest role. Agent Smith from The Matrix trilogy is.

And Cate Blanchett, wasn't she in The Aviator?

leee:

man, you should really just buckle down and read the books. if for nothing else, then just so that you will have experienced them, since they're such a major part of pop culture. like my reasons for reading every single harry potter...i didn't really like them that much, but i sort of felt like i should if i'm going to live in this era.

and to answer your question, it's hard to say. it's less epic than lotr in scale, in that the cast is far smaller and the story's about a third of the size of lotr. however, the journey they go on and the battles they fight are just as epically enthralling as the ones in lotr. and in terms of the films, i'm sure they're trying to best the lotr films, so i'm sure they'll make the hobbit ridiculously epic. the last thing they want is for fans to go "well that was good, but it sure didn't beat lord of the rings."
thwip
thwip - 12/9/2009, 10:59 AM
saymekian:

yeah, blanchett played catherine hepburn in the aviator, but that certainly wasn't her biggest or most memorable role, if that's what you're implying. i'm a huge blanchett fan. my favorite roles of hers were in "benjamin button" and "i'm not there." but if we're going scale, international appeal, or memorability, it's definitely lord of the rings.

and i'd have to argue that the same goes with weaving. he's been in tons of stuff, but i'd say that elrond and mr. smith were probably his most recognizable roles.

I dunno Thwip, I felt there was a hell of a lot more to Pans Labyrinth than showy make up! It was one of the most affecting movies Iv ever seen. Excellent performances, shocking scenes, great fairytale/Real life story.

The Hobbit is not a s well written as LOTR imo..or maybe its just geared more towards kids.. either way, I didn't enjoy it as much, but still loved it. Its more light hearted but gets deadly series at the battle of the 5 armies.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 12/9/2009, 11:10 AM
@LEEE - The Hobbit is a pretty good book, you should give it a read! It's been years since I read it, but I remember liking it a bunch!

As for the epic scale..........probably not as big as LOTR (they were fighting for the fate of all of Middle Earth after all), but it's still a grand fantasy-styled adventure and of course serves as LOTR's prequel, and it's always cool to see how things came to be. :)

This is excellent news! I've been concerned for some time about seeing a lot of Aragorn in The Hobbit. Galadriel is fine to have around, as long as she's not interacting very much with Bilbo. It's sounding more like Jackson is going to try to do the story as written.

And Leee: PLEASE! Go to Barnes & Noble, or to a thrift store or used book store, and pick up the Hobbit to read! You'll be glad you did. One of the great stories ever written, imho.
