The End of The Hobbit Movie?

MGM might lose The Hobbit and James Bond franchises!

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that MGM needs $20M in short-term cash to cover overhead, and an additional $150 million to get through the end of year to stay out of bankruptcy. This means MGM could possibly lose such franchise films as The Hobbit (and its sequel) and James Bond 23. Here's an excerpt from the article:

So the bondholders said to MGM, in essence, they were going to let the studio go bankrupt and collect their money since they'd be first in line to get paid. But Cooper explained that this would be the worst possible outcome for the creditors and the company. Because if MGM were forced into bankruptcy, then it would lose James Bond and the studio doesn't think it can stay alive without 007. Also, a lot of other issues would surface that would tremendously hurt MGM.

Also, if MGM goes through bankruptcy, that's a very expensive prospect (where only the lawyers get rich), and extremely disruptive (since who would do business with MGM in the interim) and won’t get the creditors what they want which is their money back. It's more than simply MGM losing Bond. The studio could lose a lot of other franchises.

Do you think the creditors will save the day for MGM, or do you think they'll let the studio go into bankruptcy and risk losing such franchises?

F*ck. This is bad. I hope MGM can pull themselves out of this ditch. I'd really be disappointed if this hobbit movie doesn't get made( I could care less about bond).

It seems impossible to guess the full impact this could have on the film industry.

MGM is a classic original old school studio. Personally I would really hate to see it go all the way out.

How can these giant companies go bankrupt? Must be the execs who are draining all of the cash...

This isn't the end of The Hobbit, I guarantee it. If they lose it WB will probably pick it up, as they have already started investing in production and just won their court case.

@Swiftsword

Luckily they are not shooting to make something better than LOTR, they're trying to complete a story. It's different than LOTR, so they don't have to try to copy what they did.

Let Streisand and some of those other big talkin actors like Alec Baldwin bail'em out......the way I see it, they owe the studios anyway for giving them their shots to be famous in the first place. This is no different than the corporations on Wall street. Sorry, didn't mean to go politico, but this pisses me off. And to top it off, Disney fires Richard Cook, who was the creative backer for POTC. I'm wondering if it wasn't Cook who got Stan Lee to sign off on the merger. This could mean doom for Marvel movies if they get some hot shot asshole in their who THINKS he knows comics better than an actual writer, push some agenda or start screwin' around with creative control. We'll see...

I couldnt give a flying [frick] about The Hobbit as long as it doesnt affect Bond then thats ok! Still, i really hope it doesnt go that far!

Warner Bros now owns New Line, they are producing it already. I would imagine if MGM had to drop it they would try to pick it up.

Why doesn't the government bail them out? Lol.

Well MGM is an iconic company so I'm sure someone will come to their rescue. It has pretty much been dead for years, but someone will want to own it just for the history behind it.

I don't think they can make Bond so fast anymore, because they're always trying to keep up with the bar that Casino Royale set. That's not an easy thing to do.

I wouldn't worry about The Hobbit, it'll find a good home no matter what - hell maybe they should just sell those rights in order to keep Bond.

@gbdfe I'll raise ya, maybe Disney'll buy it =P

@ imran

that might not be such a crazy thing to say! lol

anyway, i think the hobbit movies could easily be as good as the LOTR movies. there's a lot of cool things that happen in the hobbit...and they fight a dragon!

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2009, 9:43 AM
@ satanors

daniel craig is a great james bond

Thank God! They have been raping James Bond in these movies. I'm not saying the I don't like Daniel Craig or the movies with him are bad, just that these movies are not James Bond. Bond isn't an action hero, he is a gentleman spy. As for the Hobbit...I could live with or without it!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2009, 12:33 PM
@ jimdlux

actually, from what i understand, this newer series of james bond movies are WAY more spot on to the original novels that were written.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 9/27/2009, 2:52 PM
Jimdlux: Though the Bond from the novels was a 'gentleman' the character that Daniel Craig portrays is far more accurate than any other Bond yet!
Jimdlux
Jimdlux - 9/28/2009, 3:34 PM
@ CorndogBurglar and joshw24

What are you basing it on? The novels? Are we talking about novels? If you want to do a debate on the differences between novels being made into movies and how accurate they are then we can, but the argument is the differences between the Bonds in film in the past and now. 1st off there is only 1 "movie Bond" and that is Sean Connery. Roger Moore was ok. No one liked Timothy Dalton, but I kinda did, he (in my opinion) merged the classic Bond with a modern action hero quite well. Think about it, every time you watched any Bond film and he went back to headquarters who did he see? First it would be "M" then he would go see "Q". The last time "Q" was in any of the movies was with Pierce Brosnan (Who I thought was the worst Bond). Bond had gadgets and finesse. He hardly ever went drag down fighting. The only gadgets Craig used was a defibrillator in his car that was able to resuscitate him from poison...what?

joshw24, you say Craig's portrayal is far more accurate then any Bond yet. How can you make that statement when there has been 8 Bonds and he's been the least used, heck one of films was based on a film that wasn't even part of the Ian Fleming collection (Casino Royale). So, so far, Craig has been Ian Fleming's James Bond once. Hell, they wanted Brosnan years ago, but he was stuck in the Remington Steele contract. The producers felt "he" was the perfect Bond.

look I'm not saying these movies aren't good, all I'm saying is its not Bond. Its not the Bond I grew up with and its not the Bond they should be making. I don't know, call it Jason Bourne or something.
