Before George Miller returns to the wasteland for Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, the legendary filmmaker will bring us an epic fantasy romance 20 years in the making.

Miller has been working on Three Thousand Years of Longing in some form or another for over two decades, and the movie was finally unveiled for its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last night. Reactions/reviews have been mostly positive, but the film definitely didn't seem to work for everyone.

Three Thousand Years of Longing follows a scholar (Tilda Swinton) on a trip to a speaking engagement in Istanbul who inadvertently summons a Djinn (Idris Elba). The genie-like entity then details his long journey through fantasy and history as he endeavours to tempt this scholar — who claims she wants for nothing — to make her three wishes.

The first trailer promises a visual treat, at the very least. Check it out below along with a poster, and let us know what you think.

"Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic - content with life and a creature of reason," reads the official synopsis. "While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually, she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both."

Three Thousand Years of Longing is set to hit theaters on August 31.

@Lokiwasright - 98%. Documentaries/loosely based true stories can be inaccurate as well, so yes.

I get where you guys are going but by definition they aren't all fairy tales. There are certain elements required for that particular type of story that not all movies share.

Even if the bulk of films are fictional that doesn't mean they're fantastical with those same standard elements within a fairy tale. Otherwise every single work of fiction, written or filmed, would be a fairy tale no matter the intent of the author.

@kylo0607 - It was posted on SFF Gazette at the time, but we usually wait a day to repost here unless it's breaking news.

Looks like something from Terry Gilliam. In a good way.

Is this what started the rumour for Idris taking over for Will Smith as the Genie?

@UniqNo - Oh I loved it. It got me binging youtube videos about Norse mythology for what seemed like hours.
Robert Eggers just found an uncharted corner of cinematic sotrytelling and just claimed it as his. Nobody does what he does.

@Fares - He's definitely claimed it. The earlier seasons of vikings on History channel did some good stuff too, but it was a bit too hard to follow sometimes.

@Fares - I really liked it. It’s a straight-forward slasher, but it’s done really well. And the cast is terrific across the board.

I feel like I will have to be high to enjoy this. Otherwise, I don't really see the appeal at the moment. I will probably go see it sine I like original ideas and I want to support it, but I don't see it being a hit with the general audience.
