Tom Cruise... Halo or Bilbo?

It is being reported that Tom Cruise has flown to New Zealand to meet with Peter Jackson. Hmmmm.

Here's the info from IGN:

When is Tom Cruise taking a trip to New Zealand not just Tom Cruise taking a trip to New Zealand? When he's flying there to meet with Peter Jackson, that's when.

TheOneRing.net points out this article at The Sydney Morning Herald that claims Cruise arrived "at Wellington airport early on Thursday morning, sources have told New Zealand radio station Newstalk ZB. It is not known why he is in the country but it is understood he is meeting Jackson."

The paper says it's unlikely that Cruise is up for any of the projects on Jackson's plate, which includes The Hobbit (which begins filming in NZ early next year), The Dam Busters, or Tintin. But what is certain is that a star of Cruise's stature doesn't fly to the other side of the world to do a meet & greet; a star such as Cruise flies in when there is business to be done.

Most likely Cruise was there on matters related to MGM, the studio behind The Hobbit. Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner, along with MGM, forged a deal in 2006 to revamp United Artists. The initial announcement of that deal stated that Cruise and Wagner would drive the rebirth of United Artists as MGM's operating partner. However, as Variety reported last week, "it's hard to discern what [Cruise's official ties to MGM] mean on a practical basis" anymore given that the only successful film they've released since 2006 has been the Cruise starrer Valkyrie.

As TheOneRing.net points out, there's been a running joke for awhile that Cruise's ties to MGM could mean he'd end up playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. While we agree that's unlikely, it's curious that Cruise came to New Zealand the very week that Ian McKellen said the actor he knew was set to play Bilbo would be getting the script. Perhaps Cruise is just there (as the MGM brass) to observe pre-production, read the Hobbit script in a secure location, and give the Bilbo casting his personal blessing.

That said, we can't help but wonder the following: given Cruise's relationship with Jackson's Tintin partner Steven Spielberg -- and Spielberg's rumored interest in Halo, a movie that Jackson had famously tried to make -- could Cruise be looking to make a deal for Halo that might involve all parties? (Ironically, the Halo spec that reportedly piqued Spielberg's interest was penned by the writer of Collateral, which starred Cruise.) MGM has been intent on establishing franchises for a long time now, starting with The Hobbit and the reacquisition of the James Bond series. Might landing Halo be one of their objectives? Given the massive debt MGM is carrying, that would seem unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Halo publisher Microsoft and MGM have other business ties.

Eh, who knows? Maybe Cruise just heard Jackson had a nice timeshare that he could stay at for awhile.

ProfOJ- Magnolia was an awesome movie, too bad more people haven't seen it. one of the most overlooked movies ever in my eyes. I think it's safe to say that Cruise will be working on the next Mission Impossible film so I think we're safe.

He is gone to find Katie Holmes, she escaped from his cage again and she is gone to hide in Peter Jackson's beard! Either that or Tom Cruise is leading those wacky Scientologists to invade New Zealand. Oh those scientologists, they are such crazy kids.

And hell no, keep Cruise away from Halo! He isnt badass enough to play this guy:

Oh whoops wrong pic, I mean this one:

first off, bilbo is like 50 years old when he sets off on his journey, so in terms of age he's spot on.

secondly, he's short as a hobbit. jackson won't need to use any of those old fashioned movie parlor tricks to make him look tall. he can just shoot the dang film.

sounds like a weiner to me.

Not Bilbo. But I'd love to see him play in Halo! Yeah, he could be one of the crazed alien covenanent zealots that contracts the Flood! Brilliant!

He could be one of the Grunts in the Covenant. He's short enough, and annyoing enough. Plus, it would be great to see him get killed by like 2 shots :0

Keep Tom Cruise away from anything! That sanctimonious arrogant nut-case! He is short as a Hobbit but he has ruined more movies than not! He was ridiculous as a german officer! He should have been the one to play Rainman 'cause he is already like Rainman for real!

Cmon Cruise has made some great movies. Last Samurai, Collateral, Interview, Magnolia. Im not saying he is right for these movies but he's not a bad actor.

Also, although Bilbo was 50..thats really only about 25 in out years. Frodo was sposed to be nearly 50 in LOTR.

Tom made some good movies before he lost his marbles! Yes, he did! But he's gone over to the dark side. They treat people like prisoners at the Scientology compound! I don't like that at all!

I will say this about Cruise: He was my favorite part of Tropic Thunder, and that whole movie was hysterical.

I don't want him in Halo or the Hobbit. I really like both of those ideas and I don't want him near them. That is my own opinion.

Tom Cruise running in either a Halo or Hobbit movie. More proof why he runs in all of his movies. I can see it now.

(Think Family Guy)

(Tom Cruise internal voice) "Say, that hobbit's kind of cute."

(Tom Cruise takes off running through The Shire as fast as he can.)

Tom Cruise: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH You can't catch me gay self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Tom is a good actor, I could see them somehow fitting him into the Halo flick...but I cant picture him in anything in the Middle-Earth.

I could see him playing a General or something like that. Not the main character.

he wouldn't play master chief even if he was in halo. master chief is like 8 feet tall and they never show his face once in the games. if they make a halo movie, and those two things are wrong, i won't see it no matter who plays the chief
