Viggo Mortensen Calls It Quits!

Viggo Mortensen Calls It Quits!

What does this mean for Aragorn in "The Hobbit"?

This is out of the blue. The actor claims all the travel filming and promoting new films is destroying his health. Viggo goes on to explain: "I have no plans to do another movie. I don't know what's going to happen. I'm open to seeing how I feel in a while, but right now I'm not saying yes to anything. My agent is like, 'Well, if you don't do anything, people will forget about you...' I just feel like I've taken on too much for a while."

Obviously Viggo's film schedule is pretty clear right now. Viggo has said he would at least like to be a part of an "Eastern Promises" sequel with director David Cronenberg and he would also like to come back and be apart of "The Hobbit" prequels.

Thank God for Viggo's will to return as Aragorn in "The Hobbit". No way do I want a recast for that role. Viggo owned that role. This retirement kinda sounds to me like a break, which is all well and good for Viggo. When it comes time for Aragorn and Gandalf to hunt for Gollem I hope he realizes break times over.

not a huge lotr fan but i liked him as aragorn... although it's not exactly comicbook movie news..

Don't know about the rest out there, but I consider The Hunt for Gollum as part of the LOTR movies. as such, I do not want them to cover that thing all over again, when there where so many minutes dedicated just to that part. And if he decides not to come back for "The Hobbit", there is always the dude that played Aragorn in the above movie. He may not be Viggo, but at least the charater will still be in the movie(s).

Time will tell. And come 12.2011 we will also see. Can not wait. Can anybody tell me the serets of time travel?

Denn1s, he was a possible fit to play Dr. Strange. Thats why this is CBM news, also there is a ton of interest in the LOTR movies on this site.

why do people insist on complaining about what they feel is worthy of the front page?? if its something interesting to people that come to this site then what do you care if its comic book news? i would rather hear this news here, then not hear it at all, or to have to go to a completely different site to MAYBE hear about it.

VIGGO would make the best DOCTOR FATE!!!

Damn pity about the HOBBIT, but atleast we get DEADMAN first!!!

Just curious, but I don't remember Aragorn being in "The Hobbit." There was some other bowman, but mostly, it's a movie surrounding Bilbo, 12 dwarves, and Gandalf. The human bowman who slays the Dragon Smaug, was just a bowman from a little village.

If Viggo is out, then that should provide continuity for the books. No harm done, I think.

Get over it, who cares LOTR is not a comic. It fits under the Sci / Fantasy realm.

More importantly (what no one has mentioned) it's sad that one of the best actors in Hollywood is quitting.

He just needs a break. It will be years before the hobbit gets going anyway. Plenty of time for him to rest up.

the guy is 50. it is unlikely that he returns as aragorn, an action, fighting character

I thought Viggo made a fantastic Aragorn, but he has absolutely NO business showing up in The Hobbit, outside of possibly a brief cameo in the background, like he's quietly watching over Bilbo and the dwarves. (Like you'd see him back there and an eagle-eyed viewer would say "wasn't that Aragorn in that crowd shot?").

Aragorn did not appear in The Hobbit, and I don't want to see this movie rewriting Tolkien so he does, ESPECIALLY if there is ANY interaction between him and Bilbo. Aragorn and Gandalf by themselves wouldn't bother me as bad, since those two had known each other for a long time before LOTR.

And just because I don't want to see the role of Aragorn reprised doesn't mean I don't want to see Viggo in another movie. Leee, you could be onto something with him portraying Doctor Fate. I think he'd be excellent in that role.

I hope that a well-earned break helps Viggo overcome whatever health problems he's facing and that we see him onscreen again when he's ready to roll again.

perhaps a cameo of him in rivendell he was living there at the time Bilbo and company stopped bye, but he was never mentioned so he shouldn't speak.

i'm fairly sure you can get lotr's comic books (even if they are just movie adaptions) so this kind of is cbm news.

and also i hope he does keep acting coz he was wicked as aragorn.

Wouldn't Aragorn be really young in the Hobbit? The Hobbit ends with Gandalf saying that the ring Bilbo finds will be really important someday to members of his family not yet even born (Frodo). So...this wouldn't make sense at all, right?

that sucks, he's a great actor. hopefully this will be a michael jordan type of retirement. that way he can come back just in time for the Dark Tower.

@Bamf7- It makes sense. In LOTR Aragorn is 80ish. He's a Numenorian, so he ages much slower than normal humans. He would've been in his 20-30s during the Hobbit.

Oh and this *is* comic book movie news, since there was a nicely-done graphic novel made of the Hobbit a few years back.

@Gunsmith haha I was gonna make a crack about Juaoqin Phoenix, you beat me to it.

Man I can't believe he's 50 - he's in amazing shape. Yeah he just needs a rest. A guy with that kind of talent can only turn his back on his calling for so long.

I think alot of us can agree the LOTR are a sort of fantasy cross genre of movies that come from a book (granted not a comic book, but still). Those movies have had a pretty big impact on the subject of this site whether you like it or not. It may be a tenuous link, but it's there, and I for one am glad to read stuff like this on here. And Viggo was very very high on the list of the few actors with the sort of theatricality it takes to make a good comic book movie - he gets fancasted for almost every role that's come up on here recently.

Thank you..yes whiners, the Hobbit is a graphic novel, happy now?

Aragorn is not in the Hobbit but later on we find that as those events were unfolding, he would have been hunting Gollum..so i wouldnt mind an appearance.

Cant wait for his next movie, The Road.

My net is down for 48 hrs:(..so im writing this in a miserable net cafe. fear not, i shall return!;)

I can't help but wonder if filming The Road had something to do with him being tired as well and wanting to take a break....it was one of the best books I've read in awhile, but I do remember feeling almost mentally exhausted when I finished it, and I don't even come close to having a movie-star life/travel schedule to pile on top of that kind of weariness.

I don't remember Aragon in Hobbit. Just Gandolph and Bilbo. They are the only ones who had an adventure that took place before The Fellowship of the Ring. Whether he is doing movies or not, the decission won't have an effect on the Hobbit.
