GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Director Has Geek Girls Ready To Boycott

Does director James Gunn deserve ire for his annual poll of the "50 Superheroes You Most Want to Have Sex With?"

Excitement over Guardians of the Galaxy continues to build this week as the first serious moves toward casting begin. But not everyone is excited. The geek girls over at themarysue.com are all up in arms. Apparently, James Gunn, writer/director of the coming GotG, as well as Super, Scooby Doo and the TV show PG Porn, has a sense of humor. With Gunn's 2nd Annual poll results of the "50 Superheroes You Most Want to Have Sex With," the geek girls claim he is a slut-shaming, homophobic misogynist. I'm not sure if these girls and all the enraged commenters following the article have actually seen Super. But it seems clear that like Eddie Murphy or almost any other successful comedy writer, Gunn generally makes light of everyone equally.

But what do you think?

Does Gunn's list and humor strike you as intolerant and offensive? Is it exactly what you expect from Gunn's past work? And can we all agree that however Gunn's comments on the list strike you, he clearly has an impressive awareness of the Marvel (and DC) superhero mythology, and that he will bring a unique comic sensibility to GotG?

I think this'll fade away soon. I just got this feeling people will forget about it soon when the next big news story hits. Now lets all focus on whats important here....Uncle Owen and the guy who killed Bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty might be Star Lord. THATS whats important here!

Ha, glad to see Di and Jesse and everyone finding humor in this. Also really glad to see people as pissed as this made me. And, @Derp, I didn't even know about the petition! 3000, holy frick.

But overall, I'm more excited than ever for what Gunn's dark sense of humor might lend to the Marvel slate. Thanos needs a good dish of evil.

@Claire, I didn't see Zero Dark but I just watched a clip of The Warrior, and that guy seems like he can actually act. Would be a great start.

@Jollem, it's 3000 bonbon gulping, PMS Rosies vs. James Gunn. But yes, as long as he doesn't go to Lilith Fair, he should be fine.

I just hope mainstream audiences can handle how awesome this movie could be and that this kind of controversy only spurs on Gunn to make an even better, badder movie.

People are way to sensitive! And getting mad by an article that has been in Jame Gunn' blog since February is ridiculous! Jame Gunn is not a misogynist homophobic son of a bitch, is just his sense of humor. He like dirty jokes. I’ve seen people who think the language he use is truly homophobic, and you have to decide if he crossed a line you’re not comfortable with… or maybe you don’t, since it’s not like you’re being forced to read it.

And to the people who create the petition:

Also, Lee Pace for Star-Lord! Joel Edgerton looks more like Drax!

Um . . I (who is Homosexual) personally does not think he is homophobic. . Considering he spoke of having sex with Tony Stark, and the comment on Batwoman i believe was him speaking of his fantasy. I don't think he was insinuating that lesbians aren't real. You don't see gay men freaking out when woman say "i wish he wasn't gay so i could..."

@mr agamotto: heh, nice toon. the chocolate's expression is perfect for these uptight morons. And I don't know too much about Pace. But yeah Edgerton looks good for Drax too! Maybe better? Is he BIG enough?

@ Torch excellent points. the double standard is ridiculous. cheers mate.

@youngthanos, if i got what you're saying, I believe they were specifically targeting GotG. But yes the petition is pointless and thumbs up to the sarcasm.
