GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Admits AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR "Did Some Things That I Wouldn’t Have Wanted"

James Gunn introduced audiences to his ragtag bunch of intergalactic A-holes in the first Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, but the characters have been utilized by other directors since, most notably in the Russo Brothers' Avengers movies.

The team was an integral part of Infinity War (and Endgame to a lesser extent), aiding a fallen Thor and launching a valiant attempt to defeat Thanos before he could acquire all six Infinity Stones.

During that battle, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) basically sabotaged the heroes' efforts by whacking the Mad Titan with his gun when he learned that the villain had sacrificed his own daughter, Gamora, for the Soul Stone. It was something a lot of fans took issue with (Peter Quill had been portrayed as a bit of a fool at times, but a blithering idiot?), and it sounds like Gunn would tend to agree!

Here's an excerpt from a THR piece on the filmmaker and his cast.

"'They did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted,' says Gunn of the films. (Yes, he says, Star-Lord would have killed Gamora if she asked him to; no, he would not have punched Thanos and doomed the universe.)"

To be fair, Quill did ultimately shoot Gamora after some hesitation... but Thanos turned the blast into bubbles!

What do you make of the GOTG's depiction in other MCU movies? Do you agree with Gunn's assessment of Star-Lord? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

I can see his point about Quill, but he was reacting with his emotions and not as intelligence so the case could be made for him doing this. I am sure that Peter totally regretted his actions.

Dude has a point. That was, by far, the weakest thing in INfinity War

@Goldboink - was it? Peter reacts emotionally in both of the GOTG movies why wouldn’t he do that here?

@ShimmyShimmyYA -
It's the stakes man. Nothing in the first two movies reaches the level of him ignoring the larger mission to satisfy an emotional grudge.

@Goldboink - like shooting his father? Seems like an emotional decision that could have gotten billions killed.

@KaioKen -
Except that his father was getting ready to kill literally everyone no matter what.

@Goldboink - G1 essentially has the same stakes as IW Ronan was going to go planet to planet judging them and deciding if they were worthy of life or not
