GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Star Karen Gillan Was Surprised By Star-Lord Tease; Talks Possible DCU Role

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Karen Gillan has admitted to being surprised by the threequel's big Star-Lord tease and once again ponders possibly joining filmmaker James Gunn in the DC Studios' DCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was an effective end to the trilogy, but it still set the stage for the team's MCU future. Rocket now leads a new roster of Guardians, and even though Star-Lord has returned to Earth, a title card promised that "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return."

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Nebula actress Karen Gillan admitted the latter came as a surprise to her when she sat down to watch the movie last year.

"I don’t remember seeing that in the script," she confessed. "So either I have a bad memory or it wasn’t in there. So it was pretty surprising, but it was cool as well. I was like, 'Okay, what’s the plan here?'"

Asked if she believes Nebula (and Drax) will last in their parental roles on Knowhere to the children created by The High Evolutionary, the Doctor Who alum added, "Yeah, I’d like to think so. Nebula has got a real sense of purpose now, and it’s such a major part of healing. She’s been through so much, and now she can finally accept love and show love towards other people."

"So the last stage of all that healing is helping other people, and that’s exactly what she’s doing."

The trade then brought up the fact Gillan is a fan-favourite choice to play the DCU's Poison Ivy. By making the leap to the DCU, she could reunite with SUPERMAN director James Gunn in his position as DC Studios co-CEO.

"The fact that Nebula turned into ten years of work is the greatest thing that’s happened to me," she said. "So I like to leave things up to the universe a little bit and see what happens, but I would absolutely love to work with James again. He’s the best."

Gillan also commented on that viral photo of her attending couples therapy on Zoom with her husband while decked out in Nebula's makeup and prosthetics on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

"I just thought it was the funniest thing. My husband and I both thought it was the funniest, most ridiculous thing. So there was no strategy of wanting to show a real side." she explains. "It was more that we had to because it was so funny. I also think it’s good to try to normalize therapy in any way that we can."

"There is still a little bit of a stigma attached to it, and if more people just talked about it in a normal fashion, maybe we can get to the point where people are more willing to go and seek help."

Who would you like to see Gillan play in the DCU?

Nebula has had some of the best character development in the entire MCU. Thor needed that type of arc too. No film allowed him to properly make peace with what has happened to him during the Infinity Saga.

@SonOfAGif - although I kinda get that one could make the argument he hid his trauma and pain behind jokes, I do feel that reconcilation is really missing.

Doubt we'll see it in Avengers 5 and 6, but I think they could still do it. Thor 4, The Marvels and Secret Invasion are all mediocre, but I think it set up a perfect arc for Dark Reign and Siege where Thor's, Carol's and Fury's pasts can all be reconciled.

@bkmeijer1 - Love and Thunder needed to be a film about acceptance and reconciliation for Thor. Jane dying was the perfect finale he needed to complete his journey through the stages of grief.

@SonOfAGif - agreed. Think the movie kinda leaned in that direction, but never really went all-in on it. Almost like it was afraid to do so.

Guess they could again in the future, because after losing his mom, his dad, his brother, his best friend and half the universe, he know also lost the woman he loved. Still so much they can do with that. And that's where Dark Reign/Siege comes in

@bkmeijer1 - I feel like Thor 5 can do it with Beta Ray Bill. With Beta Ray being an almost parallel to Thor. Beta Ray would have lost his planet and his people and sort of calls Thor out for hiding his grief and turmoil behind humor and comedy. It would be an almost therapy session for Thor.

@SonOfAGif - that's a cool idea. Kinda like what I wanna see in Dark Reign. The US government doesn't like aliens anymore, so they might wanna invade New Asgard (in Siege) which draws Thor out and be that therapy session for him.

Beta Ray Bill is the kind of character I wanna see in a Special Presentation though, but it could work in a special as well.

@bkmeijer1 - Dark Reign would work if they incorporate a Dark Avengers of sorts. I feel like The Thunderbolts should be what sets that up with the United States government using The Sentry as their answer for Thor's interference in the mass deportation of Aliens. SWORD gets abolished and Trask Industries is hired for their Sentinel Program to hunt any and all aliens.

@SonOfAGif - think Sentinels down the line would be cool to see, but I kinda wanna see Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot and his Dark Avengers (including Hercules) first.

Dark Reign could see the US Government contract Norman (instead of Sentry) to help deport aliens. This could indeed follow Thunderbolts. Ofcourse, this won't go well as Skrulls are still around messing things up (and this time, we won't know who they are).

In Siege, most aliens have retreated to New Asgard and sees Osborn mount his final assault. This is where both Thor and Captain Marvel really come in. Both need to step up and come back to Earth to help save those that they couldn't before.

@NateBest - is there any word on the edit button coming back? Because I keep noticing mistakes until after I wrote a comment and then repost them again. Editing was so much easier and better

Who would have thought Nebula would have one of the best arcs in the MCU thus far?.

Her journey of redemption & healing was well done and if it’s the end for the character then so be it but I wouldn’t mind seeing Nebula pop in from time to time if need be.

Also , I can’t really see her as Poison Ivy but I could as Batgirl (though depends on how old they want Babs to be in this).

bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 11:19 AM
@TheVisionary25 - I could see her as Batgirl too, but it would indeed depend on the ages of all characters.

I think having Batman around 40 would be good, so that he's still somewhat close in age to a 25 year-old Superman. As for the sidekicks, having Dick and Barbara around 10 years younger could work imo
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/16/2024, 11:25 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Corenswet himself is 30 so I think Clark will be around that age

I could see having a Bruce that’s in his mid to late 30’s (maybe even early 40’s) while Dick & Baba (and Tim or Jason) are like early to late 20’s
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 11:33 AM
@TheVisionary25 - yea, Gunn initially said Superman was gonna be 25. Withh Corenswet's casting though, I could see it be changed to 30 as well.

As for the Batfamily, I think they could do Bruce around 40, Dick and Barbara 30, Jason and Cassie 26, Tim and Stephanie 22, and Damian 18. So each started at Robin and Batgirl around 18 and served for roughly 4 years (on average).

Nebula is a great [frick]ing character.

Wouldn't mind her as Poison Ivy!

Definitely liked the character more with every subsequent appearance tbh!!.

She's right we maybe should normalize therapy, because in my limited knowledge it kinda feels to me she doesn't take it seriously by forgetting it and showing up in full make-up. They can both laugh about it now though, so I guess it worked.
Deklipz
Deklipz - 3/16/2024, 12:27 PM
@bkmeijer1 - or took it seriously enough to still do it while she was in full makeup? She could have blown it off completely but didn’t. That’s more than most can say.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 12:56 PM
@Deklipz - guess that also makes sense. Still, I think it would be pretty distracting. Hard to say, given I don't know her either
