GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Hints That He's Planning To Kill-Off Some Core Team Members

It sounds like we might have to apply The Suicide Squad's "Don't Get Too Attached" tagline to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as James Gunn has strongly hinted that not everyone will make it out alive.

Without getting into spoilers, James Gunn showed his more ruthless side in The Suicide Squad by killing off some pretty major characters, and it sounds like the director might be taking a similar approach to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

While it's highly unlikely we'll see too many casualties among the core team of intergalactic A-holes, Gunn did strongly hint that we might well be losing someone in the Marvel Studios threequel.

"There's a much bigger sense of danger for all of our characters [in the Suicide Squad] because we know all of them could die," Gunn told ET in a recent interview. "Whereas in Guardians, yes, obviously I killed Yondu, I killed the big original Groot, but it isn't the same thing. We know most of them are going to make it out alive. At least for two movies."

When asked to elaborate on his ominous tease, Gunn responded: "You'll have to wait and see."

Again, it's difficult to imagine Gunn going too kill-crazy in the family-friendly MCU adventure, but the filmmaker has confirmed that this will be his final GOTG movie, so we are anticipating an emotional sendoff for at least one beloved Guardian. Place your bets below!

Last we heard, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was still on track to begin shooting before the end of the year.

Feel like Drax is going to meet his maker.

@Frshcoupe - I am kinda curious to see whether or not Gunn will change his script to add more character background to Drax since he and Bautista seem to get along really well (if it isn't already in there) .

@Frshcoupe - As long as Drax stands incredibly still, he’ll be fine.

@Frshcoupe - Tbh he should've bitten it in Infinity War in Nidavelir's forge. Would've been powerful.

I like his character but since Vol.2 he became a comic relief and nothing more.

@cerrone6 - I'd be shocked if they chose to kill her twice

I can see Drax and Rocket both die/sacrifice themselves. Quill too, but he'll probably fail in doing something heroic.

@bkmeijer - No, Rocket leaves the team, he leaves one family for another type of family.

I obviously don’t have any idea what’s going on in Gunns head but I can’t help but think this is a film he feels he SHOULD make rather then WANTS to make

@manofillintent1 - yeah after all that Twitter/Disney fiasco, this is like telling your girlfriend before she dumps you, that you’ll help build a new kitchen, plan it, draw it up, budget it, for her to only dump you before you start work on it.

Then many months later, she contacts you out the blue because that other chick gave you a chance on the things she never, and realises you’re the only one that can finish this kitchen - so awkwardly asks you back, knowing you’re with that new chick, and you just know you’re hearts not in it completely, especially since you know after this she won’t have any use for you.

A short story by Se4M4NSt4ine.

I think Drax should be the number one option to kill off. And maybe for a surprise emotional hit, kill off Star-Lord. That way Thor officially takes over as the leader for the Guardians.

Also, I could definitely see Thor and Star Lord having the same dynamic that Bloodsport and Peacemaker had.

@KWilly - I doubt Thor will become the new leader. Atleast of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I could see him lead a completely new team with Valkyrie, Korg, Miek, Gamora, Nebula, Groot and Mantis though. Maybe, if Volume 3 introduces them, also with Adam Warlock and Moondragon.

So it'll start with most of the team dying then we pan over to team 2.

Don't be Quill or Rocket, that's all I ask. If I have to bet it will Drax saving his daughter Moondragon. It will give his character more depth and Disney won't need to deal with Dave's constant moaning anymore.
Timerider84
Timerider84 - 8/10/2021, 7:54 AM
@Urubrodi - Drax is a given, Dave wants out, but Peter Quill, that would be a shocker for sure.

Well, Rocket makes sense, because Vol. 3 will dive into his background (especially his creators). I don't think Drax was supposed to die, but given Bautista's comments, I could see them rewriting that.

I’m not a fan of killing characters for shock value especially main characters…. I wasn’t a fan of Captain Boomerang but they did that character dirty in the Suicide Squad. So hopefully he doesn’t go full We Todd in GoTG3.

Unites - 8/10/2021, 5:52 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Gunn knows what he does. He killed characters for shock value in the Suicide Squad because it fits the tone of the movie. He won't do that in Vol. 3 and only kill off characters if that makes sense to the story.

When people complain about S.S having to many fart jokes, I'm always thinking......Have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy, half the diaolgue is dick jokes. With James Gunn, dick/fart jokes are his explosions.

Drax, Rocket and maybe Nebula

Timerider84 - 8/10/2021, 7:57 AM
@BlackBeltJones - Rocket is not dying, he's just walking away from the team to live a new life. Drax is definitely gone though.

Well Bautista seems to not like the franchise…so he’s number 1.
Mantis is useless so she’s number 2
Quill has become a complete bore/loser so put him number 3.

Karen Gillian might be in the new Pirates Films…so she is still in bed with the Mouse. Either they ice her to allow her to be Captain Jacks illegitimate daughter…or she does both and it’s a nice pay day. Put here 4th.

Gamora/Groot already been “killed” so they are at bottom.

Rocket goes on lunch boxes and the core fans underwear so he’s last in power rankings.

@IronGenesis - Mantis is a fan favorite. She's as safe as Harley.
