GOTG Vol. 3: Fans Are Very Concerned About Rocket Raccoon After Emotional First Trailer

James Gunn wouldn't kill-off Rocket... would he? The first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released earlier tonight, and things are not looking good for our surly raccoon pal...

"We’ll all fly away together, one last time… into the forever, and beautiful sky."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The first teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released earlier today, and it's fair to say director James Gunn wasn't exaggerating when he noted that the threequel "has a lot of heaviness in it.”

Though the trademark GOTG humor is also highlighted, the final few shots hint at some pretty emotional moments, and fans are particularly concerned that Rocket may not make it out of the movie alive.

There's no denying that the teaser makes it look like the surly raccoon-like alien is going to meet his maker (and we're not talking about The High Evolutionary), but then, several other characters also appear to be in pretty rough shape!

We see Nebula carrying a lifeless Peter Quill, Drax being supported by his fellow Guardians after suffering a blaster shot to the chest, and Nebula taking a sound beating (possibly from Adam Warlock).

Then, we have those shots of Quill and Mantis wailing in anguish as someone lies hooked-up to tubes below.

Of course, trailers are notorious for misdirection, and this one seems to have been edited with the specific intention of keeping fans guessing about which character(s) we're going to lose. Hey, it's always possible Gunn will allow everyone to walk away in one piece, but based on the filmmaker's previous comments, we'd say at least one member of the crew is toast!

What do you guys think? Is Rocket in for his last hurrah, or will someone else bite the dust? Have another look at the trailer, and drop us a comment down below.

In Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

James Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova.

Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

He dead 😬

But I'm cool with characters dying as long as they have a proper goodbye💪

@AmazingFILMporg - If it's not a misdirect they could easily make it one of the most emotional deaths we'll ever see in the MCU.

He's always got the tough-guy facade going on and acts like he doesn't care about anyone. But they could really make it hurt if they play into the fact that he actually does care about the rest of the Guardians and have him actually say it as he goes out saving them all.

@AmazingFILMporg - and they stay dead for how long? Surprised Gamorra isnt in this, oh wait...

@ScRipt69 -

More characters die and stay dead in the MCU than any other franchise.

Gamorra isn't the same gamorra and that's just one example💁

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 looked Amazing. AND NO not going to kill Rocket wouldn't make it look that obvious in first trailer.

Calling it now that the hints of Rocket dying is a bait-and-switch for Drax biting it in the end, perhaps even to save Rocket.

SpideyPuffsMJ - 12/2/2022, 12:04 AM
@SheepishOne - it would be so hollow because Drax has been a doofus since GotG 1

@SheepishOne - Drax is for sure gonna die but I think it’ll be additionally to one other Guardian.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Drax is a doofus, but they also leaned pretty heavily into his family being killed in the first movie.

They could definitely bring that back into the story and make it emotional.

Drax had a daughter. Why is he such a d!ck? Amazing trailer but hitting the kid w the ball was pretty stupid. Seriously the holiday special too, does James Gunn hate Batista? He’s pretty publicly unhappy w the direction of his character and we just keep getting more laughing and being stupid from Drax.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/2/2022, 12:03 AM
@SpideyPuffsMJ - Gunn has done a terrible job writing Drax. He was handled great in Vol. 1 because Gunn had a co-writer (he honestly needs a go-writer in general) and was handled PERFECTLY in Infinity War.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Yes, it's sad. He went from a great warrior who didn't understand non-literal interpretations to being a tired old trope of the character for everyone to laugh at and make fun of.

I didn't even like this trope when I was a kid.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - the Batista thing is weird because he’s only complained about mcu and not Gunn directly

Goddamnit Gunn - don’t kill my number one dude!

Kill Drax, kill Mantis or even Quill - but leave Rocket and let’s be real - Cosmo alone!!

Slightly OT but I’m pretty confident that Gamora is never going to connect with Quill on that level because she’s from a different time and that’s gonna crush Quill but he will learn to accept it by the end.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/2/2022, 12:16 AM
@TheLobster - Agree. It's not the same Gamora. And it would be kind of cheesy to have them hook up. Like a "they are meant to be together even in all their variant forms" kind of thing. Blech. I gagged just typing that.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/2/2022, 2:19 AM
@CorndogBurglar - yeah and it’ll just diminish the death of Gamora in Infinity War. Hate it all around.
BlanketMan
BlanketMan - 12/2/2022, 10:20 AM
@TheLobster - I hate to rely on the "but it's a comic-book movie!" excuse... but in this case, the permanence of death in comics is a long-running joke at this point. No one stays dead other than maybe Bruce Wayne's parents and Uncle Ben. So Gamora's death was meaningful in the context of IW and bringing her back shouldn't diminish that, as we pretty much knew she'd come back, right?
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/2/2022, 11:05 AM
@BlanketMan - I can understand that viewpoint but I do think that it would still be a cop out and/or lazy writing. It’s much stronger, narratively speaking, if Quill comes to terms with the fact that his Gamora is gone.
JstaKIDfrmBKLYN
JstaKIDfrmBKLYN - 12/2/2022, 12:13 AM
I can't imagine Bradley Cooper wants to voice him forever even if it is an easy (and I'm sure hefty) paycheck. But even so, the cannot - CANNOT - kill off Rocket. That would be the absolute coldest shit ever. I would never forgive them.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 12/2/2022, 3:59 AM
@JstaKIDfrmBKLYN - Bradley Cooper had said the voice over was his highest paycheck. In fact his voice role in Guardians Vol 1. Was higher than his paycheck from all three Hangover films combined. He even went to voice the character in his pajamas. He also has a no promotional tour clause in his contract. This is one role I don't see him letting go of. It's a guaranteed paycheck and the easiest job of his entire life.

Rocket's farewell seems like an intentional misdirect. Drax will probably be the one to sacrifice himself. Bautista has been very vocal about being unsatisfied with his character's arc. And Drax's entire motivation was to avenge his wife and daughter's deaths at the hands of Thanos, which has already been accomplished. I trust Gunn will give Drax an emotional sendoff considering he gave us the most genuinely heartfelt moment in the MCU.
