GOTG VOL. 3 Spoilers - Who Lives, Who Dies, And Who Could (Potentially) Return?

The trailers always hinted at a few casualties, and you can find out which - if any - members of the crew meet their makers in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 right here...

Ever since the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released, fans have been preparing themselves for the very real possibility that they were going to have to say goodbye to at least one beloved character, and Rocket always seemed the most likely to go on up to the spirit in the sky.

So, which - if any - of the space-faring misfits met their maker in the Marvel Studios threequel? Major spoilers from this point on.

Not a single one!

James Gunn subverted expectations by keeping every major character alive by the time the credits rolled, although there were a couple of significant fake-outs, and the movie still proved to be a heartbreaking watch. While none of the Guardians themselves died, we did lose Rocket's pals Lylla, Teefs and Floor in a truly devastating scene when they were gunned down by the High Evolutionary and his guards.

After being saved by Adam Warlock, Peter Quill haded over leadership of the team to Rocket, while Drax and Nebula remained on Knowhere, Mantis went off to explore the galaxy on her own, and Gamora returned to the Ravagers. The new team, which consists of Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Warlock, and Phyla-Vell, could well return at some point, but Gunn has confirmed that he won't be helming any potential Vol. 4.

Quill returned to Earth to reconcile with his grandfather, but the title card tells us that "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return," so Marvel Studios clearly has other plans for the character.

How did you guys feel about Gunn's decision to leave every one of the Guardians standing? Do you think the movie would have benefitted from a major death, or do you believe it was emotional enough without one? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Anyone can come back. Disney has deep enough pockets and deepfake technology to do so.

Bet Stan Lee cameos are coming back soon too

Just came out from my viewing aaaand gotta say...it's my favorite Vol, Gunn truly won me over this time.

Visually stunning, everything was on point and nowdays that rarely happens in the MCU.

@Doomsday8888 - Visually stunning?!

This had the same washed out and grey color palette that every MCU film nowadays have. Gone is the richness of colors that were used in Vol.1 and Vol.2.

It was by far the weakest of the GOTG films.

@kylo0607 - You certainly have the minority opinion here. This was an amazing film.

@Tonic24k - just leaving my 4th viewing and an overwhelming majority that I have seen would absolutely agree with you

@kylo0607 - that is a ridiculous opinion. This was one of the most colourful films I’ve ever seen. It was gorgeously shot. You may be colourblind. You’d have to be.

The fact that not a single character dies and yet it doesn't feel like a cop-out speaks volumes to how well written those characters and their respective goodbyes were.

Gratitude doesn't begin to describe what I, as a fan, owe Gunn. Rightful place on the Mt Rushmore of the MCU.

@DrReedRichards - yeah too bad some people are gonna take their expectations as bad writing , cause death is the only sufficient consequence apparently

@ShimmyShimmyYA -

Even if they did find that impactful enough, which they still wouldn't be able to explain, I doubt they'd be honest enough to admit that their predetermination and bias were simply wrong.

@DrReedRichards - Doesnt feel like a cop-out? "medpacks" are basically magic, and can cure any injury, Groot and Nebula are pretty much immortal, Quill can survive in space despite being 100% human, etc...
I dont have a problem with all character surviving, per se, but there was no need to put every single Guardian in that situation only to cop-out at the last second...

bcom - 5/7/2023, 5:42 PM
@DrReedRichards - Agreed. Killing off characters to end their story almost seems like too easy of a cop out (this better not happen to Indiana Jones!). Letting people live and concluding their story arc is far more satisfying in my own opinion. This version of the Guardians story together may be over, but it didn't mean anyone had to die to end it.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 5/7/2023, 5:44 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 -

What are you on about, man? For as "magic" or simply convenient those medpacks might have been written as, they're the very reason Rocket found himself in this predicament in the first place. Let's not forget that they are what short-circuited Rocket's kill-switch on his heart's muscle and left him in critical for the majority of the movie.

DrReedRichards - 5/7/2023, 5:46 PM
@bcom -

Ditto. No disrespect to Stark here, but it's also why I loved Cap's send-off at the end of Endgame a lot more.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/7/2023, 5:48 PM
@DrReedRichards -

*Drax gets shot in the chest and the back*
"give him a medpack!"
*Mantis gets her arm broken*
"give her a medpack!"
*Rocket gets toasted by Warlock*
"give him a medpack!" (which works when they remove the kill-swith)
*Quill was in space for half a minute*
"give him a medpack!"

I understand is space and all, but it becomes ridiculous and removes any tension...plus, they seem to have an unlimited supply of them.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 5/7/2023, 5:51 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 -

The way I see it, those med-packs merely hastened the recovery. They weren't used as instant lifesavers before a following battle. In all of the examples that you gave, the team rested immediately after. They were by no means written as miracle workers.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/7/2023, 5:53 PM
@DrReedRichards - Drax is cracking jokes in the very next scene he gets DP!

What I dont understand is why James created the lazy plot-device when he never needed it in the previous two movies...
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 5/7/2023, 5:59 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 -

Drax is always cracking jokes, my man! Much to my complaint, as I have pointed out in one of my criticisms in ohter articles, but still, it's not out of character or any kind of script inconsistency.

I mean, hell, even Rocket jokingly calls everyone a moronn for saving him, mere moments after waking up.
bcom
bcom - 5/7/2023, 6:21 PM
@DrReedRichards - Yeah. It's just something that always irks me for some reason. When I know that I'm about to watch a movie or show that's billed as the 'final chapter' of a series it's always in the back of my mind that the main character or characters are going to be killed off. To me, it just feels like the studio and writers have taken the easy option out.

As I said above, to me, it is far more satisfying if you can conclude a story in a way that has meaning and makes sense and let the main characters go on about their lives. This is exactly what James Gunn did with the Guardians. Their story together has ended (for now?) but their own individual stories continue and it feels good to know that.

On that note, I have an almost genuine fear that they're going to kill of Indiana Jones at the end of The Dial of Destiny. I know he's old and Harrison has said this is definitely the last time he's going to play Indy, but please for the love of god let this man ride off into the sunset instead of killing him off!

@TheHumanSpider2 - Quill is not 100% human. Your assessments are really bad and your complaining tour is getting worse and worse. Cheer up. Geezus...

@TheHumanSpider2 - Star-Lord is half-human since his father is Ego, that's a key detail worth to remember.

Gunn will return around 2028 after a few of his DC movies do as bad as Snyder's and WB decides to stop funding big budget DC flops.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 5/7/2023, 10:22 PM
@PartyKiller - WB will never stop funding DC movies no matter how hard they bomb. This company will try to fail forwards as much as possible. Because Catwoman exist, WB will keep on keeping on with DC.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 5/8/2023, 6:34 AM
@Arthorious - For over a decade WB has been chasing the dream of Marvel's MCU money. They have had an attitude that DC Comics' IPs are guaranteed to make the same money because those IPs have long been Marvel Comics' rivals.

But the MCU was a popular TV series in theaters. It was the Walking Dead. Like the Walking Dead, it lost it's original cast, it became a pale imitation of itself, it lost popularity and faded. The MCU series is now Walking Dead season 8. Dying fast but not dead yet.

Once the MCU's numbers have fallen far enough that WB no longer sees gold at the end of the CBM rainbow, they'll stop investing billions trying to recreate the MCU's success.
