GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL Will Be Essential Viewing Before VOL. 3 Confirms James Gunn

There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming to Disney+, and director James Gunn has now explained how that fits into the wider MCU and Vol. 3...

During Disney's Investor Day last year, Marvel Studios made it clear that they have serious plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy. As well as the upcoming Vol. 3 (and a cameo appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder), we're getting an I Am Groot animated series on Disney+ along with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

That will be a live-action project shot at the same time as Vol. 3, and writer/director James Gunn has now shared a few more details about what we can expect from the small screen spinoff.

"It’s in-canon," the filmmaker confirmed, "it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great I’m really happy with it." So, it sounds like it will be essential viewing, teasing the team's next movie and likely bridging the gap between Thor: Love and Thunder and the upcoming threequel.

"I’m gonna film it at the same time as the movie," Gunn added. "I’m using a lot of the same sets, the same actors obviously, so we’re filming simultaneously with the film but it’s gonna have to be edited and finished sooner."

Gunn is currently doing the rounds to promote The Suicide Squad, but work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to begin soon and the director is clearly going to be very busy. However, he's likely used to pulling double duty as scenes for the "Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!" ride in Disneyland were actually shot while cameras were rolling on Vol. 2

Which of these upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy projects are you most excited for?

Was kinda hoping this to take place between Volume 2 and Infinity War, but I think it's more likely that it takes place after Love & Thunder.

@bkmeijer - Ahhh, because of Baby Groot, and the whole Gamora situation?

@TheAstoundingMan - and also because there is about 5 years between Volume 2 and Infinity War. Something interesting must've happened I assume

@bkmeijer - I think these tie-ins are going to be as essential as the D+ shows or their end credit scenes and not be that important. I think a lot of the new and returning characters are just going to be re-introduced again in the movies so you can probably skip them all. I'm a fan and watch them all but I think people without D+ can skip these and won't be confused either.

I know Kang was just introduced but that variant just got murdered, so the next time we see the actor in Ant-Man 3 they are going to introduce a new version who "acts and looks completely different" from the one we saw in Loki.

@mastakilla39 - my expectation as well (that was initially my argument for why Kang wouldn't show up in Loki, but then I didn't consider a variant), so it's probably gonna be something fun. Even when Gunn says it's essential watching

Ya know. I think if Deadpool ends up getting a firm rated R solo flick in the MCU, James Gunn should direct it. He's been gushing about SS about how he was able to go all in and be gratuitous. His comedy is pretty miss for me most of the time, but I feel like it actually aligns with Deadpool's brand pretty well. Between him and Ryan Reynolds I think they'd make a great movie.

@ClungeZilaVDong - Maybe a little Starro attached to the Milano. Something similar to a mollusk embedded in the hull of a ship.

I remember being fed the lie that Captain Marvel was essential to watch before Endgame. I’ll never get those two hours back. But! It’s Guardians so I’ll be there.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - If Chadwick Boseman is playing Star Lord in a canon MCU spin-off then anything is still possible.
