GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Currently Looks Set To Rocket To $14 Million Thursday Previews Opening

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has arrived in theaters, and early box office numbers suggest the threequel has already blasted to a solid $14 million in North America thanks to Thursday preview screenings.

It's still early days, but Deadline has shared early box office data for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which suggests the threequel has earned roughly $14 million during Thursday previews.

We'll have confirmed numbers a little later today, but this is a solid start for the movie and one that bodes well for what's currently shaping up to be an interesting weekend for James Gunn's farewell to the team. A few weeks ago, tracking pointed to a $130 million opening weekend, but that's since been lowered to a more conservative $110 million.

As the trade explains, no one is currently sure where the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie will land, though it should debut with an impressive $250 million global opening.

On a brighter note, advance tickets have picked up in recent days, and are now nearing the same levels as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. That arrived in theaters with $106.1 million over three days and $120.3 million over four. For comparison's sake, Guardians of the Galaxy earned $11.2 million during its first Thursday, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 followed that with $17 million.

Thanks to the pandemic, box office takings have decreased in North America and $14 million is a respectable haul for a movie that hasn't quite received the same level of critical praise as its predecessors. However, Vol. 3 currently boasts a 96% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie's CinemaScore hasn't been revealed yet, though we should have that information to share with you soon.

"As heart-wrenching as it is hilarious," we said in our review earlier this week, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s masterstroke and a showcase for both his filmmaking talent and a cast that makes everything about this movie simply awesome. An absolute triumph."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.

By far the weakest of the Guardians films.

The Rocket stuff was good, but (SPOILER) Gunn didn't have the guts to kill him off (or any of the Guardians for that matter).

Alternate Gamora was annoying to watch.

Adam Warlock was wasted and after the setup from the previous film, he's just kind of there. The High Evolutionary was a cringe villain and all he does is scream from the second half of the film onwards.

The visuals were washed out and the beautiful color palette from Vol.1 and 2 was greatly missed. It looked like every other current MCU film with that grey-ish style that missed any personality.

John Murphy's score was bland and the only memorable piece was Tyler Bates' motif from the first film, which was very rarely used. Reminded me of what Natalie Holt did with Kenobi, replacing all the great themes with generic noise, with good themes used only here and there to remind of much better composer work.

Gunn at least nailed the ending, but the film overall missed the spark that the first film (and partially the 2nd) had.

Also, this had some of the worst mid and post-credit scene in an MCU film. Complete waste of time.

6/10.

I liked it more than expected, going in with low expectations helps. I will say, imo I think it's the best Guardians. Sure the story is simple, but there's enough heart to make up for what it lacks. The jokes were better this time, aside from maybe two or three. My biggest complaint is Adam Warlock, good grief. Overall like I said, I'd rewatch this over one and two any day.

@bobevanz - also the High Evolutionary was pretty decent as a villain, his acting was pretty top notch for a ridiculous gimmick, which does have a satisfying ending

@bobevanz - Yeah Adam Warlock was much different than I expected. Entertaining at times, but a bit much. Everything else I thought Gunn and the cast nailed. I guess I'm in the minority but I loved it. Lot of emotions I thought. To each their own I guess

@bobevanz - I agree. This was very well executed. I really love the OG MCU vibe this gave me. In GotG fashion of course. And I’m hoping Secret Invasion does the same in Winter Soldier fashion.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last night TRULY AWESOME movie. The plot was built around Rocket made the movie more personal and tone down the humor. All the Guardians had their chance shine. Action and CGI were amazing. 5 Stars / 5 Stars.

Will see again.

Word of Mouth. Rotten Audience Score is at 96% with 1,000+ Verified Ratings. Critics score is 80% should help sell tickets definitely nothing like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reviews.

@GhostDog -

Don't know, man. It was definitely a blast, but 2 is still the underappreciated little gem in my book.
