The most recent clip from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 featured Peter Quill dropping an F-bomb, and director James Gunn has now revealed that the inclusion of the swear word was a last-minute addition.

The sneak peek sees Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) rushing the crew into action as they prepare to face-off against The High Evolutionary's forces. When Nebula (Karen Gillan) has some trouble getting the car door open, Quill walks her through it, before getting increasingly frustrated and telling his teammate to "open the f*cking door."

It's censored in the clip, but Gunn confirmed that it won't be in the movie itself, before explaining how the word wound up being a part of the scene.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Well there has been "[frick]s" used in some DC films/Shows so it was only a matter of time.

I mean... It's a MCU film, they go into production with half a script, Most of the dialogue isn't planned.

@Taonrey -

Whole decade of success without a script? Accidental praise at its absolute best.

@Taonrey - yup James Gunn, renowned for his transparency and thoroughness when it comes to screenwriting, wrote HALF a script for this…

Glad it won't be bleeped. Will this be the first official f-bomb in the MCU? It's been teased, but I don't think we actually hear anyone say it. And here this site is that censors the word.

@Jacory - I think it is the 1st official non beeped Fbomb, I know the ones in the Spiderman films have been obscured, and there was a sneaky half a fbomb used in Moon Knight, but in MCU films I think this is the first official non censored F-Bomb

The "one f-bomb in a PG-13 movie" is so arbitrary and ridiculous. Does it seem completely bonkers to non-Americans? Like, does the word require a restricted audience or doesn't it? Just one is A-OK, but two ... OH NOOOO!

And, yes, I get that all kinds of standards are arbitrary, but it's just bizarre. In many cases, the line between PG-13 and R is nebulous. But it's strange to think the exact same movie but with a word that is *already in the movie* spoken a second time would be R-rated.
