James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 landed on tracking today, and Marvel Studios' next Phase 5 film looks set for a decent, if unspectacular, opening weekend at the domestic box office.

According to the latest estimates, the space-set adventure is expected to take in $130 million over the course of its opening weekend in North America.

This would be higher than the original GOTG's domestic debut, but quite a bit lower than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which took in $146.5M back in 2017. However, Deadline does note that Vol. 3's "campaign hasn’t really fired up to its full potential yet."

Box office estimates have proven to be way off in the past, of course, so we obviously won't know for sure how GOTG Vol. 3 performs until it arrives in theaters three weeks from now.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

They’ve got to enhance the marketing soon as the release nears. I’ve seen some marketing but not the usual ONSLAUGHT. NBA Playoffs will be an avenue to exploit

@TheHumanSpider2 - idk. Playoffs start Saturday so they can spend the next 2 weeks dumping commercials there.

I’ve seen commercials here and there but it hasn’t been as heavy as it normally is

Is that all? Please. I could make that much in a few several lifetimes if I really tried.

Super Mario brothers made what $200 million opening weekend? Is superhero fatigue setting in?

@Reginator - two completely different things, animated is it’s own category with mostly Disney as the powerhouse and yeah mark looks set to pass the Frozen movies.

Another meh boxoffice for the MCU post-Endgame.

Will the MCU ever have another $1 billion+ hit again? Or has Disney finally run this thing into the ground like Star Wars and everything else they have by flooding the market with too much "content"?

@Feralwookiee -

Smh. What a dumb analysis. You do know MCU will have films in the top 5 highest grossing films of 2023 right?

130 ow is considered bad now🤡?

What a clown

@AmazingFILMporg - No need for name calling.

Are you saying Marvel will have FIVE movies that are top grossing in 2023, or do you mean AS OF 2023, they will still have 5 of the top grossers all time?

Because Ant Man 3 was a flop, GOTG3 will do ok, but not great and The Marvels will probably flop.

My point is, the MCU's peak is long gone and it doesn't look like they'll ever recapture that magic again imo.

@Feralwookiee - Maybe not until Avengers:The Kang Dynasty or Avengers:Secret Wars.

They need to bring X-Men forward.

@Feralwookiee - Is anything other than Mario making a billion dollars this year?

@Feralwookiee - i think 130 is decent.

But i agree marvel is on a decline. Im guessing the only movie performing good this year is this one.

If The Marvels flop, good luck on the next few movies aside from Spider-man

@WakandanQueen - There's another one of those dumb Fast and Furious movies, and Mission Impossible 492 so those will probably make a billion mainly due to international audiences.

@vectorsigma - Yeah. I don't see the Marvels or Sam/Cap or Thunderbolts being big hits.

They'll all probably come in somewhere in the $450-650 million dollar range.
