We recently found out that Marvel Studios had decided to put the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie on the back-burner for a while as the search for a replacement director for James Gunn got underway, but it looks like the threequel is going to be delayed for a lot longer than we anticipated.

According to Production Weekly, GOTG Vol. 3 is not scheduled to commence production until February 2021, which means the movie may not hit theaters until late 2022 at the earliest. In addition, the working title has been revealed as "Hot Christmas" which may suggest a festive setting.

As far as we know, Marvel stills intends to use Gunn's original script.

What do you guys make of this? We expected a delay, but did you imagine GOTG Vol. 3 would be shelved for this long? Drop us a comment down below.

Thats 5 years after Vol.2, I think the the longest time between sequels in any MCU franchise

I interpet this as the studio putting a date on the calendar just to make it seem like all is well behind thse scenes.same tactic that DC, Fox and Sony do when a movie is stuck in development hell.

As of now, I doubt Guardians 3 happens. And if it does, it will be very different than what it originally was supposed to be.

Marvelous work Disney, you took one of your most successful and beloved series within the MCU and halted it in its tracks.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I mean, there is no need to rush the thing out after losing the director. They were probably having a lot of trouble figuring out what they want to do. Given how Avengers 4 ends they may not feel that it's imperative that Guardians comes out right away. It's not to hide that things are going on behind the scenes, literally everyone knows that a lot is happening behind the scenes so them pushing it to 2021 is actually a step up from it being on hold indefinitely, which it was. If anything it shows to me that they have settled on a plan going forward and are now looking for a Director to take over a project not a lot of people want to take over.

@HeavyMetal4Life - If they're putting GOTG 3 on hold for 5 years, then there's no way in hell they're using Gunn's script. It's going to be a complete revamp. The cast will just be shuffled through other films and then allowed to go their way.

Already, I feel like Bautista, Rooker, and Sean Gunn may head over to the new Suicide Squad film if James Gunn directs.

@Battabing - yeah, Bautista is a likely exist, as is Sean. Wouldn't be surprised if others follow.

@Battabing - Dude, can you count? we are in the year 2018, the production is scheduled to start in 2021... 2021-2018=3... where the heck are you getting 5 years from, seriously.

@JustAChillFan -
Well, 4 years until it hits theaters.

@JustAChillFan - also probably means G3 isn’t vital to the story going forward of the they can push it off by 3 years

JustAChillFan - 10/18/2018, 11:49 AM
@Battabing - But they are using the script in 3... you're not very bright are you?
JustAChillFan
JustAChillFan - 10/18/2018, 11:53 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I mean, has it really ever been? Guardians introduced the Power stone and Gamora, Guardians 2 did nothing to further the story of the universe, it was more of a side quest, one I enjoyed but if I was to tell which movies to watch to understand Infinity war and A4 (the thing they were building to) I wouldn't tell you to watch 2. We don't know what the story for G3 is supposed to be but if it's in the same vein as G2 then it can kinda come out whenever. G2 is set like 5 months after the original but came out 3 years later, it really doesn't matter.

@JustAChillFan - Yeah, and Feige said he was making an Inhumans movie.
JustAChillFan
JustAChillFan - 10/18/2018, 2:18 PM
@Battabing - And? Plans change sometimes, you're logic applies to literally every movie that hasn't started production, hell movies that are mid production. You're saying that Kevin Feige is a liar because he announced a movie that they later ended up giving to Marvel TV as it was mainly Ike Perlmutter who wanted something to against X-Men, Kevin Feige didn't really care for the Inhumans, and once Kevin no longer had to answer to him he also no longer had to make a movie he didn't want to. Add to that the show still later came out anyway. But you're saying this one thing means we can never trust a word out of Marvel because they went back on something they said once, out of all the times they have said things. You're pointing to one thing, saying it is a prime example of how a company operates, when it is essentially an outlier. I don't think you know how the world works buddy.

@HeavyMetal4Life - yea I think Drax will get his wish if this movie doesn’t start until 2021. I wouldn’t hire him after he delayed my $750 million dollar film.

@HeavyMetal4Life - as successful as Marvel Studios is, a time delay like this between film sequels can only hurt its overall box office sales 4 years is reaching into nostalgia territory kids who have seen GOTG2 as a freshman in highschool will now be in college or off in the working world they are letting a target audience age and in this world as fast as it moves now with quick access and instant gratification this is a mistake.

@JustAChillFan -
Are you really trying to explain to me that plans change?
JustAChillFan
JustAChillFan - 10/19/2018, 4:38 PM
@Battabing - You speaking like they don't, yea it makes me have to explain that they do. You're saying one thing when in reality it's another. If I don't point it out I'm just gonna assume you're going to keep saying nonsense.
