GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Recasts Miley Cyrus' MCU Role With LOKI Star Tara Strong

It's been confirmed today that Marvel Studios has replaced Miley Cyrus as the Ravager Mainframe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Loki star Tara Strong stepping in to lend her voice to the character.

Loki and Batman: The Animated Series star Tara Strong recently confirmed that she has a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the prolific voice actress won't be playing a new character.

Instead, a press release sent out by Disney reveals Strong is replacing Miley Cyrus as Mainframe. The singer and actress first lent her voice to the original Guardian in one of Vol. 2's post-credits scenes, but for whatever reason, won't be back for this threequel. Writer and director James Gunn might choose to share some details about the change on social media, though we're guessing this came down to scheduling or money.

Cyrus only had a single line for her uncredited 2017 MCU debut, so the change isn't overly surprising in many ways.

We know Sylvester Stallone will return as Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while Michael Rosenbaum is back as Martinex (who now looks a lot more like the Smallville alum than he did six years ago). Beyond them and Mainframe, we don't know who else from that team of Ravagers will appear.

Strong, who voices Miss Minutes in Loki, isn't the first actress to have more than one MCU role. Elsewhere in this movie, Laura Barton/Mockingbird actress Linda Cardellini - who starred in Gunn's Scooby-Doo movies - is lending her voice to Rocket's love interest, Lylla!

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova.

Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

"Strong . . . isn't the first actress to have more than one MCU role."

That would be Gemma Chan, who was in Captain Marvel and Eternals, followed closely by Michelle Yeoh who was in GotG2 and Shang Chi.

@ClintThaHamster - After EEAAO, expect her to play another character with actual substance.

@CoHost - They could always give her character a bigger role in the Shang-Chi sequel since she didn't die.

@ClintThaHamster - Alfre Woodard was in Civil War and Luke Cage.

@soberchimera - I used to use this as an example as well. Unfortunately Luke Cage was not in set in the MCU.

@soberchimera - Ah, right, I was only thinking of movies, but she was.

@ClintThaHamster - They guy who played Amadeus Cho in Incredible Hulk was a school teacher in Spider-Man Homecoming

@Chuck420Taylor - I still think they'll use the multiverse to canonize (and then subsequently sideline) most, if not all, of Marvel TV. Honestly, it'd be a massive missed opportunity not to. If they're going to fold all of the Sony Spider-Man films into continuity, why not Defenders, AoS, et al?

@ClintThaHamster - Laura Haddock was in Captain America: The First Avenger, and then played Star Lord's mother in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1

@Havenless - Hadn't heard this, but did some googling: It appears that Martin Starr's character was only called Amadeus Cho in the novelization, which wouldn't be considered cannon. He was credited as "computer nerd" in the movie, and Feige's said that we should consider "computer nerd" in Incredible Hulk to be the same character Starr played in Homecoming, etc.

@obarium - I was thinking mostly of actors who played named characters in more than one film, but sure, I'm sure there have been many background actors who've been in multiple MCU projects. Hell, I know a guy who was a security guard in Ant-Man, and then a Jersey City cop in Ms Marvel (though I suppose that could plausibly be the same guy! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

@ClintThaHamster - you see he's been doing security since before antman and with the blip and everything he just decided to move across the country and move on to the big league.

@ClintThaHamster - definitely agree that they should fold them into multiverse shenanigans. Otherwise wtf is the point, you know who you hired. Granted the general audience doesn't see these background players, I feel like enough of us do. Hell Alfre Woodard was a major force in the movies and TV. Again I doubt most remember the woman for appearing in Civil War.

@Chuck420Taylor - As a fan of Alfre Woodard, and of her performances in both Civil War and Luke Cage, I didn't remember she'd played both roles until I read a listicle about "Actors who've played multiple roles in the MCU."

Well she had her boiled chicken phase but I can’t be the only one here who thinks she’s hot now

I’m disappointed. I couldn’t wait to see her as a hot Portuguese man of War (I always did like the toxic ones). Oh well

@MasterMix - yep, while everyone was mocking it, I just stayed kind of quiet. In fact, last year, I met a girl when I moved back to the New Orleans area, a city called Kenner, and there was this white Cuban girl that had been here about eight months. Basically looks like Miley Cyrus, but she had blue hair at the time. My dumbass fell in love with her and when she didn’t use me, I sought out opportunities for her to use me. I finally saw the dumbest and smartest thing that I could do. I helped her with her down payment for a car. Right as my transmission needed changing. And I struggled, and my credit went down to what it was about six months ago. A lot of hard work down the drain. And now she never calls me, and I couldn’t be happier. Except for my bad credit, which makes me want to kill myself every now and then. Man I miss being married. Is Miley still single?
