GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Rockets Past $280 Million At The Worldwide Box Office

The latest box office numbers are in, and Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has come out of the blocks strong with a better-than-expected global debut of $282 million...

Though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 didn't quite manage to hit initial $120 million domestic estimates with a still impressive $116 million opening weekend, James Gunn's MCU swansong has surpassed global expectations.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios' second Phase 5 film has added $168 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $282 million. This ranks as the 50th highest global debut ever.

Some analysts are still beating the "superhero fatigue" drum, but much better reviews (it's now "Certified Fresh" on RT with 81% and a 95% audience score) than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and positive word-of-mouth should keep butts in seats for another while - although Vol. 3 will soon face very stiff competition from the likes of Fast X and The Little Mermaid, so we'll just have to see if its legs hold strong.

Something that could work against the movie, however, is the growing perception that it's far from the usual family-friendly MCU fare, with parents being advised to reconsider bringing young children to see it.

Have you been to see GOTG Vol. 3 yet? If so, what did you think? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Well deserved.

Thanks for everything, James.

@DrReedRichards - What this article does not tell us is that GotG 3 has the lowest (9th out of 9) opening, even without adjusting for inflation, out of all other "1st release of the summer" Marvel films that have opened late April/ early May. This article puts a very positive spin on the results, but it depends on perspective. I am going to see it in a coupe hours. I hope its good and can maintain at the box office.

@DrReedRichards - I'm glad to see the MCU and the genre as a whole still has legs. If this movie had failed it would have been a much bigger sign than just the MCU getting tired.

I think this proves that with the right characters the people will still come out to see these movies.

@Shivermetimbers -

What this article fails to admit is that it tries to put a respectively negative spin on those same results, conveniently (for the author) neglecting to mention that said result comes under a period of already established underperformance, not just by this particular ffranchise, but of the industry in general. For a more analytical description, feel free to consult Dan Murrell's weekly BO breakdown on his YT channel.

@CorndogBurglar -

I agree, though I'd put greater emphasis on people than characters. It was the people, in this case Gunn himself, who made these formerly unknown D-listers into actual characters we care about. Same way Markus and McFeely modernized Cap and improved on Stark, among others.

@DrReedRichards - you gonna keep reference the covid effect? when NWH did the 2.3bn.. dr stange 2 did 1bn (what a crap movie) but ok thats different. when top gun did 1.6b but that different.. when super mario did 1bn?! maybe, jsut maybe these movies arent as good as they once were.. and the general audience isnt as botherd about the mcu. i predicted 250-300m opening.. at 2.5 multipler. so 800m is possible which is OK. but its barely breaking even.. so im not sure marvel would count that as a win.

@iceballsreborn -

Where did I reference Covid, exactly?

@DrReedRichards - I agree the one I referenced has a negative slant but that was my point. Depending on the source, the same news is often represented very differently. As a follow up, I LOVED GotG vol 3. Saw it earlier today and enjoyed it much more than anything else in phase 4 including Spider-Man (which I liked but found to be way overrated).

"... phase 4 ... Spider-Man ... overrated."

People acting like SM:NWH is some sort of masterpiece is making me question my sanity at times.

Rspectfully disagree. Both are amazing, but TWS and CW are nigh insurpassable.

@cadunovaes01 - Nice to hear the film is good (haven't watched it yet)... But to me:

GoTG1 was on par, perhaps a bit better than TFA, yeah.
GoTG2 isn't really a good movie and drags the average down, on the other hand TWS is perhaps the second or third best MCU film.
GoTG3... Well as I said I didn't see it yet, but it'll need to be VERY GOOD to come close to Civil war.

Again, my opinion.

@cadunovaes01 - I don’t consider civil war be part of captain America trilogy that had everyone in it some people had more screen time than captain America himself

Midnaslament

@DrReedRichards - honestly civil war was more an event with a cliffhanger and many introductions than a captain america arc closure. as a trilogy its a little disjointed
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 5/7/2023, 5:11 PM
@Midnaslament -

Strong disagree. It manages to work both as a cliffhanger for the Avengers and as a stron finale for Cap. In my experience, one did not detract from the other.

@cadunovaes01 -

Hot take, but I find GotG.v1 immensely overrated. Greatest reason people rate it that high is because it took them completely by surprise.

I believe GotG.v2 improved on it on almost every level, escept for the humor which was admittedly overplayed. Better action, better chemistry, better villain, better soundtrack, all around just better in my book.

I wouldn't go as far to consider it one of the "best trilogy" since vol. 2 was a big pile of crap.

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/7/2023, 12:57 PM
@JonAwesome - I think there was a "point" to EGO destroying it in Guardians 2, the Russos just didnt "got it", and gave him the helmet again in Infinity War...
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 5/7/2023, 1:29 PM
@JonAwesome - He had to turn over his weapons before entering the High Evolutionaries base. I assumed his helmet was considered a weapon so he didn't have it on.
