GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Star Was Left In Tears After Reading Script; Teases Post-Thanos Nebula Story

Cameras are expected to start rolling on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next year, and Karen Gillan has now opened up on the emotional rollercoaster the screenplay took her on and Nebula's MCU future...

There's a lot of excitement surrounding James Gunn's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we'll see the Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder, it's up to The Suicide Squad director to put the spotlight back on the team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

He'll have a lot of loose plot threads from Avengers: Endgame to deal with, of course, including that new Gamora and how Nebula is feeling after losing her original sister (and gunning down her past self). During a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, actress Karen Gillan discussed the impact reading Gunn's screenplay for Vol. 3 had on her.

"We read it in the same room together, and then looked at each other and we were in floods of tears," the Scottish actress said of her co-star Pom Klementieff (Mantis). "You’re learning more about existing characters and on a deeper level. I’m really excited at exploring Nebula, post-Thanos."

Fans of the MCU have been going nuts about the Nebula we got to spend time with in What If...? recently, though we're not expecting this version to undergo such a drastic transformation. Gunn has, however, described this threequel as a conclusion to the team's story, so it should be a lot of fun finding out where the character's story goes next...assuming she survives, that is.

There have been rumblings that shooting could begin later this year, though we're not anticipating production fully starting until 2022. As well as working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn and the cast will also film The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special ahead of its rumoured release on Disney+ next Christmas.

What do you hope to see next from Nebula in the MCU?

I’m excited. I think this is going to be in between 1 and 2 in terms of how good it is. It’s pretty hard to top Vol. 1 because it’s was amazing but Vol. 2 (while good IMO) I think it can top. It’s an unpopular opinion but I think he fumbled pretty hard with The Suicide Squad I think he really wasted the potential of what they said that movie would be but I think painting within Fiege’s lines at this stage of his career is going to lead to something special

@Ha1frican - critics were calling TSS one of the best cbm of all time lol. The reviews point to him doing the opposite of fumbling. Movie deserved all the praise it got. It’s the best cbm of the year considering Shang Chi went Black Panther and fumbled the third act with some cgi shit show. Starro [frick]ing ROCKED.

@Ha1frican - the less Feige micro managing the better. TSS made this quite evident.

@McMurdo - Honestly the more I think about TSS the more I disliked it and it has a lot to do with what they told us the movie was for the last year. I think they are ally squandered the whole “it’s crazy anyone can die” thing that had me initially excited with the way they went with it. After that it honestly was just a funnier and more heartfelt version of the movie we’d already seen in 2016 and I was pretty let down. I don’t totally blame James Gunn because how do you actually have enough characters to have deaths throughtout and also have enough screen time for each character to have an arc but I still feel like they didn’t deliver what they hyped the movie up to be. It’s a big reason why I now don’t think Suicide Squad should be a movie at all, but an HBO Max show

@McMurdo - Also I literally started that by saying it was an unpopular opinion I’m aware most critics and viewers liked it lol

Still a firm believer that Nebula deserved to kill Thanos over anyone else.

I just hope they tone down the use of music as a way of conveying emotion. The first movie hit it right but some of the music in the second movie was too on the nose. This criticism isn’t confined to just the GoTG, I feel a lot of movies these days use popular music as a crutch for emotional cues. I felt the new Matrix trailer was subpar for this reason.

Tbh, I think the whole team should go out in a blaze like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I hate to say it, but it’s time to clean the table and start again. We shouldn’t be afraid to end stories.

I’m willing to bet they’ll make Nebula and Mantis fall in love.

I used to hate Nebula (and aside from the Yondu subplot - I hate most of GOTG Vol. 2) but the development in Infinity War and Endgame changed everything for me. Now I really am excited to see where Gunn takes her.

@Toonstrack - Well, Gunn has stated a few times that Rocket's character is based on him (to some large degree), so I'm guessing that will 100% determine what he does with Rocket.
