Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's box office performance has stirred up a great deal of conversation this weekend. While the movie had an undeniably impressive opening weekend by exceeding expectations with over $118 million, analysts have come to expect more from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What's going to be telling is how James Gunn's threequel performs over the next week, with its second weekend a key indicator of whether "superhero fatigue" really is beginning to set in.

A combination of Avengers: Endgame being such a definitive ending and the pandemic has definitely led to a decrease in attendance for MCU movies. However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still off to a strong start. It's also worth noting that most blockbusters would kill for a $100+ million debut, so the power of Marvel Studios can't be underestimated.

Now, we have some news about the movie's budget; according to Variety, the movie cost $250 million to produce and roughly $100 million to promote.

That means Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will likely need to earn $600 million - $800 million to break even, a feat that should be obtainable considering the fact it debuted with $289.3 million globally. Over the next two weeks, the movie has little in the way of competition as the likes of Fast X and The Little Mermaid are still a number of weeks away.

"As heart-wrenching as it is hilarious," we said in our review earlier this week, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s masterstroke and a showcase for both his filmmaking talent and a cast that makes everything about this movie simply awesome. An absolute triumph."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.

The money shows on screen. Anyways, this had the best preview to weekend multiplier for any Multiverse Saga film not named Shang-Chi or Eternals, wayyyy more backloaded than NWH, MOM and L&T. Monday numbers seem strong as well.

Sticking with my $750M ww total prediction for now, but it may just get closer to $800M.

@WakandanQueen - agree. a 2.5X seems likely with only 2 weeks of clear runway.

Dang. Well, he's gonna have to make Superman on a tight budget. WB isn't as free-flowing with their money as Disney is.

Man...Once that TONIC4K guy that trains at 6 AM (not PM) is done pumping iron (no it's not code for gay shit) he's gonna give some people here a mouthful for talking bad about Marvel. (and yes a "mouthful" is exactly what you're thinking.)

I saw it last night, I give it a 7.5! The animal scenes didn't seem to get me like it did everyone and the high evolutionary was kind of pantomime/meh imo but overall it was a solid movie.

I kinda prefer 3 to 2 but 1 remains the best in my eyes.

It will be hard to reach $800 million.
I'll predict between $600-$750 million, depends what happens in the next week or so.

@marvel72 - Around $700M (a bit more, a bit less) seems about right.

Why is it always 250? 50 percent of it goes to over paid actors and subpar cgi lol

@bobevanz - still the best movie in the trilogy, if you disagree you're stupid

@bobevanz - they basically set budgets on tiers and then expect the movie to be made within that budget.. thats why all the fx houses are so unhappy working for marvel/ disney.

The picture would have to make $700 million in US box office alone to break even. Add in some foreign box office and you can lower the US figure.
Always figure the studio gets about 50% of the US box office take and about 33% of the foreign.

@JonC - The studio always gets 50%, and the theathers chains the other 50%, then you have China, which keeps 75%.

I call BS on this one, this movie didnt cost $350M.
If it is the case, then this movie, best case scenario, is barely breaking even.

I have never bashed an article by Josh Wilding, but this one is utter bullshit.

There is no scenario where GotG Vol. 3 will break even.
Fast X starts next week on wednesday 17th.
$290 million on the first weekend is not great.

Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 both dropped a little more than 55% on weekend 2.

That means $118 million minus 55% would be $53 million on weekend 2.
Let's see if the movie makes that.

Also V.1 ran for 25 weeks, Vol. 2 for 20 weeks, Vol. 3 won't run that long.
