JUMANJI Star Karen Gillan Believes Nebula's Story Is Only Just Beginning After AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Karen Gillan has shared her thoughts on why Nebula's story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only just beginning despite her story arc coming full circle in Avengers: Endgame. Hit the jump for details...

In Avengers: Endgame, we saw Nebula confront her past (literally) and finally say goodbye to her villainous father, Thanos (twice). Some fans have since argued that the character's story has arguably reached its end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but actress Karen Gillan has a very different take on that.

"I don’t feel like her story is over at all," she told Fandom during a recent interview. "If anything, I feel like her story might just be beginning. We found her in a really broken, vulnerable place and over the course of the movies, she’s had to face the source of all of her abuse. She’s just had this huge, cathartic experience and the source of the abuse has been eliminated, so what happens next?"

That’s something that I think is incredibly interesting,"
Gillan continued. "The healing can start but that’s not going to be easy and it’s not going to be immediate either."

There's a strong chance that we'll next see Nebula in Thor: Love and Thunder, but the villain turned hero will almost certainly return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As for how Gillan is planning for that, she explained that she's hoping to delve into how the character will recover after what she's been through.

"First of all, I want to read a lot of psychology essays on people recovering from abuse," she explained. "And second of all, I can’t wait to kind of channel that into Nebula but also have fun with her at the same time. I feel like we’re really going to start to define who she is without Thanos looming over her."

Regardless of what comes next for Nebula, she's definitely in good hands with Gillan as the actress clearly cares a lot about doing this member of the Guardians justice on the big screen.

Are you guys excited to see where Nebula goes next?

Would love a Nebula & Gamora D+ show that depicts their rivalry while training and being raised under Thanos. Would also be an opportunity to have some Black Order cameos and of course more Thanos time.

Also want to see Star-Lord & Yondu and Rocket & Groot as D+ shows

It sort of depends on Marvel's Cosmic ambitions, I guess. With Thanos gone, they're still doing Guardians 3. Thor may be sort of space-y. Eternals has a cosmic connection, but will probably be very Earth-centric. Unless it's just as a member of the Guardians, I'm not sure if there's a lot of opportunities for her to explore that future she's talking about.

Unless they do a Disney+ show, of course. If some Rando with a green baby can have a space show, then there's no reason Nebula couldn't do some American Spacewest drifting of her own.

@TheJustinHammer - I'm not a big Nova fan, but the only limit does seem to be hours in the day for them to make it. It's not like Disney+ couldn't handle one more Marvel series.

@TheJustinHammer - While I believe the Surfer deserves the big screen, D+ could be a great starting point to fully tell his origin.

@TheJustinHammer - A streaming miniseries is definitely the best avenue to do a Silver Surfer solo franchise. Plenty of time for him to ruminate and pontificate and ...some other kinds of "ate", I guess.

But as far as Cosmic goes, Starjammers is still at the top of my wishlist. Introduce them separate from the X-Men so it feels like a crossover when they meet up. Maybe it could be done on a TV budget depending on how ambitious the costume/puppet department is for Ch'od and Cr'reee (and possibly Sikorsky). Or if She-Hulk is going full CG, if the tech is there for the Starjammers, too.

Basically a whole series of the best episode of the Mandalorian. Space heists for days.

I don't think she is necessarily tied to the cosmic stuff inextricably. Even so what Marvel has proven is that they can take obscure characters and make something special out of them. James Gunn waxed poetic about Nebula being one of his favorites and at the time I just didn't get it. She is the character that has done so much losing and had her ass kicked so hard and still managed to come through it a better "person". Her relationship with Rhodey was also surprising and well done.

Happy to see her interacting with anyone and anything in the MCU.

I think Nebula is probably the most interesting character in the MCU at the moment. I would definitely like to see her featured more prominently in the MCU moving forward.

@Nebula - If you look at all of the characters currently in the MCU there are probably 3 or 4 that have pretty deep, complex backgrounds that could be explored in future movies...

Nebula - stolen from her family, ripped apart, tortured and remade by Thanos. Spent her life wanting to kill Thanos. Thanos is now gone so how does she rebuild her life without the lingering pain and anger.

Gamora - similar backstory to Nebula. I think a movie or Disney+ series starring these two dealing with a post Thanos world would be interesting to see.

Thor - Literally lost his whole family. This has briefly been touched on but how he finds closure and peace moving forward will be interesting to see in Love and Thunder.

Bucky - Similar to Nebula and Gamora, he's a broken man who lost a big chunk of his life. I'm guessing Falcon and The Winter Soldier will explore some of this though.

Few have had their asses kicked so completely and in so many different ways. She had to kill herself to save her sister's life for Pete's sake. How twisted is that.

Yea, she may be the most fascinating character in the whole thing.

@Goldboink - Yeah, I left that point out actually, thanks for the reminder! I kinda liked the symbolism of that though. She had to literally kill her past (and herself) to move forward. No other character in the MCU has gone through as much torture and torment as Nebula and yet she is striving towards redemption. Yeah, her story is definitely only just beginning.

@Goldboink - Also, Josh says in his article... "Some fans have since argued that the character's story has arguably reached its end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe"... I don't think anyone has ever "argued" that.
