HE-MAN: MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Movie Could Skip Theaters And Head Straight To Netflix Instead

Why risk disappointing box office returns when you can just release a movie on Neflix? It appears as if that's Sony's thinking, as they currently mull over putting the live-action He-Man reboot on Netflix.

It's been in development for over a decade, but it now appears as if the Masters of the Universe reboot won't even get to see the inside of a theater. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is mulling over a number of options for the movie (that's supposed to be released in 2021).

Noah Centineo was attached to play He-Man but his involvement is now uncertain, and the rest of the cast has yet to be filled out. As a result, cameras obviously haven't started rolling, but the studio is now considering whether to find a studio or financier to help with the cost of the project as they really can't afford another big loss after this year's Men in Black: International

Now, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group co-president Sanford Panitch is handling the negotiations between Sony and Netflix, and while it's still early days, this would be a big win for the latter.

After all, with so many new competing streaming services coming our way, original content is more important than ever before and something like Masters of the Universe would definitely drive up subscription and viewership numbers for Netflix. It will also help Sony avoid another box office disaster, especially if they're not overly confident in this movie's chances of success.

As always, we'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

Netflix needs to be smarter or theyre gonna be known as the place where studios dump movies they have no faith in.

@rebellion - And Netflix could turn that around too because if a famous studio can't make lemonade with what they have then Netflix will have to make Lemon merengue pie.

Wow, way to have confidence in making quality movies and marketing them well. Might as well just throw in the towel and sell yourself now if you don’t think you can make successful movies out of known IP.

It wasn’t reported on this site that I remember... but Kevin Smith is writing a He-Man anime for Netflix from the same people that did Castlevania. They should do that first before jumping into live action and see what kind of response they get. MOTU is a great IP that shouldn’t be wasted on a quick money grab.

I like Noah C...think he's gonna be a big star but...he aint no He-Man. Someone like Liam Hemsworth or Armie Hammer would suit better. I doubt either of those 2 would be into Netflix however.

Anyone who watched Collider May know that Kristian Harloff and Mark Reiley worked on MOTU for ages and best described it as Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings and its such a rich property but deffo needs to be a cinematic event,

Idk about this. Netflix makes decent shows and movies but they’re mainly a one and done watch for me, nothing really grabs me to make me want to rewatch them....

I'd have rather seen this in the theater but at this point just get on with it. And for God's sake don't make it sci-fi techy.

Well that's disappointing. The way I see it, if it's going to Netflix, make it a series e.g. Dark Crystal.

Seeing as Netflix has the documentaries, the She-Ra animated series and I think also the continuation of the '80s series coming up (should have gone for a new adaptation Thundercats style), it could actually be a good place for the movie. The MotU audience is built in to the service.
