HALLOWEEN ENDS Director Told Actor Rohan Campbell That Fans Would "Not Be Happy" With His Character - SPOILERS

Corey Cunningham proved to be one of the most divisive aspects of Halloween Ends, and actor Rohan Campbell has now revealed that director David Gordon Green pre-warned him about the backlash.

Halloween Ends is now playing in theatres and streaming on Peacock, and while the final chapter in David Gordon Green's sequel trilogy does have its share of defenders, it also came in for quite a bit of backlash from long-time fans of the iconic horror franchise.

Several aspects drew criticism, but the introduction of new protagonist/antagonist Corey Cunningham arguably proved to be most divisive.

Corey inadvertently kills a child he's babysitting in the opening scene, and becomes Haddonfield's new "Boogeyman" of sorts (though he is initially more ridiculed than feared). Later on, he meets the actual personification of evil, Michael Myers, and seemingly becomes possessed (for lack of a better word) by The Shape before adopting his murderous nature.

Now, actor Rohan Campbell has revealed that Green warned him in advance that his character could incur the wrath of fans.

“You want to do it so bad as an actor, but it’s really scary to step into this. You can’t doubt yourself for a second,” Campbell tells Variety. “When David offered me the role he was like, ‘I need you to know that a lot of people are going to really, really, really not be happy with what we’re choosing to do here. You’ll probably hear a lot of that.’ Jamie [Lee Curtis] reached out and said the same thing.”

Two of the people that were far from happy with Ends were franchise vets Scout Taylor-Compton & Danielle Harris!

The idea of introducing a Myers disciple could have worked if the execution was better, but many of the film's detractors feel the script simply failed to capitalize on the premise. It's a shame, too, because Campbell gives a compelling performance.

What did you guys make of Halloween Ends and the Corey Cunningham character? Drop us a comment down below.

Look, ima be 100%, I’m a huge fan of Halloween. I love the franchise, even the dumb ones like Revenge of Michael Myers. 2018 was okay to me, but it wasn’t a real Halloween sequel as much as a T2 version of a Halloween movie. Kills I didn’t really enjoy like the rest of the franchise.

If Ends was the 2nd movie of the trilogy I would have absolutely loved it. As a final chapter, I don’t love it. If they had made 2018 end with Michael Killing Laurie’s daughter, then getting burnt, and then having him live in the sewers right after that (ignoring Kills altogether) and this movie followed introducing us to Corey as a new antagonist, it’d be one of my favorites. As it is, I still had a lot of fun.

@DannRamm113 - That's 100% what I was thinking, this felt like a great 2nd film. But weirdly was the last. I actually like the ideas this film was going for but since it was the last it didn't feel like they had time to pace it better.

I thought the film was okay, but my sister loved it, glad you had fun with it! Also I totally agree with H20 being second best hehe

@Reeds2Much - I never feel right ranking it because with Michael Myer movies to me they're on a different curve. Like is Halloween 4 objectively a great movie? no, but its a good Halloween movie. Is halloween 3 a good movie? Yes, but I can't rank it alongside the franchise as it had become

@DannRamm113 - Fair and understandable. I appreciate 3 for trying to do something different in the 80s when slasher boogeymen were kind of dime a dozen. To me the movie deserves more recognition. It's silly but the idea of wearing a mask and watching tv still kind of makes me nervous.

@DannRamm113 - I will place Halloween 3 on The Prince Of Darkness,The Thing,The Fog and In The Mouth Of Madness list! It's a great John Carpenter atmospheric apocalypse dark eerie movie (even though he didn't direct it he wrote it and it feels like a Carpenter movie thanks to Tommy Wallace)🤘🏼

The director probably should have warned him the movie was going to be terrible.

The whole marketing strategy was really deceptive. It's one thing to tell people up front that the killer they expect to see is barely in the movie. But it's another thing to promise the ultimate showdown between Laurie and Michael Myers, only to give people a storyline nobody asked for. I think that's what angered me the most.

Ends at least tried to do something different.I enjoyed the way the director choose. But I think that what makes people angry about this movie is the fact thats the last ( ? ) film.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/20/2022, 10:06 PM
@cadunovaesbr - No. What made people angry was the fact that the film was promoted as the final and ultimate showdown between Michael and Laurie. The trailers made it seem like Michael was on a warpath to get to Laurie. It was pure marketing deception because Blumhouse knew the film was bad. I don't know what has more deceptive marketing. Halloween Ends or Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice.

I'm actually in the middle of a re-watch, and you know what? I'm gaining slightly more appreciation for certain aspects. Once you know that Corey is basically going to be the main character and you're not waiting for Myers to show up, it's clear the movie is at least attempting to try something different and even has a few things to say - no matter how clunkily they're put across.

@RorMachine - I'm the same, I've seen the movie twice now. Still have mixed overall opinions on the storytelling but I do think I enjoyed it more the second time since I knew what was going to happen. So I could just watch it for how it was. The overall idea is actually pretty interesting and different which I appreciate I just don't think it was overly successful in it's execution.

I do see this becoming more popular over time like "Season of the Witch" which everyone hated when it came out, but has now found a large following.

MUTO123 - 10/20/2022, 8:05 PM
@RorMachine - I think what helped me in not hating it was that a buddy of mine had told me beforehand that this was the Jurassic World Dominion of Halloween (this is a better movie, BTW) and that Michael wasn't the focus, so the blow was softened a lot for me.

AmazingFILMporg - 10/20/2022, 8:12 PM
@RorMachine -

The actor did a great job for what he was given.

My problem with the film is that everything is left up to interpretation and it feels like the writer and director were too cowardly to answer questions and oh yeah, the fact that they did all this in the last film in the Laurie saga!!!!!

Why this film?

Whhhhhhhyyyyy🤡!?!?!?!?

mgeoff88 - 10/20/2022, 9:46 PM
@RorMachine - I’m not sure I could bring myself to rewatch it that soon. Now if they did an extended version, I would check that out just to see would footage was cut, and if it added more to the movie somehow.

Yeah, because first-and-foremost, a director of a genre-movie should ALWAYS set-out to make the fan-base unhappy with his character and script decisions. It shows the director has integrity.... SMH. 🤨

I loved Halloween Ends. I don't understand the criticism at all.

As a lifelong fan of the series, it was great seeing it return to the "force of evil" theme, instead of trying to explain Michael's backstory again and give him any understandable motivation to kill. Michael is evil incarnate, and Ends really hammers home this idea of an infectious evil. Loved seeing Haddonfield getting ravished by Evil and its people succumbing to its poisons.

I don't need to see Michael vs Laurie for the fifteenth time (though they managed to shove that into the ending), and I don't need to see a 2hr film of Michael just stalking randos yet again. If that's what we'd gotten, then cool, but Ends is way more interesting in its exploration of "what" Michael really is, rather than "who".

Corey is a great character, and I wish he either would have lived, or the film had ended soon after he knifed himself.

I also loved Kills, for the record. People don't even know what they're complaining about, these days. H2018 is by far the weakest of the three, and each has progressively gotten better.

I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's baffling that "long time fans" didn't enjoy this one. From my perspective, what more do you want from a Halloween film?

@SheepishOne - "What more do you want from a Halloween film?" Horror. Suspense. A fearsome villain.
SheepishOne

@PartyKiller - I can agree that it was a less suspenseful entry in the franchise (though I felt the suspense of anticipating what Corey would become was interesting). But I thought the villain was incredibly fearsome, and the horror was well executed while still being fun.

Interesting, if you know you’ve created a character people are going to hate, maybe don’t move forward with it. Unless your goal is for people to hate it.

Personally, I thought this story could have worked better in the second part of the trilogy. Obviously some thing’s would need to change. But the entire Corey storyline would have worked better in the middle than in the finale.

I get what they were trying to do but the execution was ASS. The character and movie were an absolute bore. No shade on the actor. He did a fine job with what he was given.

Not happy with the character, the story, the misuse of Meyers, the movie overall.

This film should have been the first movie and the first should have been the last.

I don't hate the idea tbh, but I do think the theme needed to be fleshed out much more. I don't fully get what they were going for here. Was it that the fear and paranoia around Michael helped lead to this? Fear and hate is a parasite?

The movie was trash, but at least I laughed a few times. Halloween kills had me in stitches, though. I don't understand what went wrong with the sequels after the 1st movie. Kills, and Ends, felt like a completely different creative team made them.

@FearTheLiving - My one real complaint with this one is that it didn't end with Corey sitting up Michael-style as soon as Michael goes through the grinder. Seemed like such an obvious way to satisfy the arc.

Other than that, this is maybe my favorite Halloween sequel. Definitely top three.
