HALLOWEEN ENDS Was Never Going To Be A "Laurie And Michael Movie" According To Director - SPOILERS

For better or worse, Halloween Ends was not the movie fans of the iconic slasher franchise were expecting, and director David Gordon Green has now revealed that it was never going to be...

While it certainly has its defenders, Halloween Ends has arguably proven to be even more divisive than its predecessor, with some feeling short-changed by the decision to shift focus to a new character (Corey Cunningham) rather than concentrate on the final showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers.

To be fair, the movie does deliver that big face-off in its final moments, but the first two acts deal with Corey being "influenced" (it's never really made clear if there's a supernatural explanation) to commit murder by the legendary masked maniac, while embarking on a somewhat unlikely relationship with Laurie's granddaughter, Alyson.

Director David Gordon Green has previously revealed that he did consider several different endings, but now makes it clear that the closing chapter of his trilogy was never just going to be about Myers and Strode putting their decades-long feud to rest.

"We had to decide how we wanted to wrap up these characters," he tells MovieMaker.com. "How do we want to make it not just a nice, neat bow on a franchise? Honestly, we never once considered making a Laurie and Michael movie [Laughs.] The concept that it should be a final showdown-type brawl never even crossed our minds. I wanted to see where it would go. I wanted one to win, one to die. But we were always more ambitious with that. So how did we want to go out? By doing what no one except us would do: make a love story. It’s our version of going out with a bang and opening our hearts to this community and these characters."

Taking a big swing for "The Shape's" last hurrah was admirable, but some would argue that the execution let the idea down. Still, you can't blame Green and his team for at least attempting something different here - even if the movie was marketed as the "final confrontation" between Laurie and her relentless nemesis.

Well nobody liked it, it was boring as shit, about characters that nobody cares about, with even worse dialogue than the previous century. Halloween 1978 Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills. And I’m good. They should’ve just tacked on the Laurie and Michael final confrontation to the previous movie. Since this was a legacy movie anyway

Yet they set it up as one in the trailer.
You know you have a crappy movie when you have to tell a different story in the trailer than the one you portray on screen.
And it was an absolutely horrible movie.
Disjointed, rushed, nonsensical. Just a mess.

I didn’t expect much after the preceding mess Halloween Kills (which is a dumb name) but this was atrocious.

What's with these film makers thinking they're above pleasing the fans? It's not like your idea was any better.

We treat fans as such a disease, but come on. We are adapting all these existing IPs. Guess why those IPs are so valuable?
The fans.

i didn't mind it its not resurrection style failure that still holds the card for me.

The ringey bit was when laurie said get your tits out or somthing along those lines and when she was like a school girl twiddling her hair in that supermarket scene despite it being a nod to the original lol

Spoilers: Michael Myers went out like a dog on a table quietly being put to sleep. David Gordon Green went Rian Johnson. Instead of entertaining, he opted to try to look smart by doing what no one wanted. Like Rian Johnson, Green made a terrible movie and failed to look smart.

Bro, then why even make a Halloween movie? I mean in the end I guess you actually didn't, so why waste the time and resources of both cast/crew and the audience? No one wanted this movie the way you made it, so why did you?

@BlackBolt84 - "Because he wanted to make a movie that made him happy" - according to himself. While I don't disagree that you shouldn't make a film that you as a director are unhappy about, maybe you also shouldn't claim to be a big fan of the franchise and alienate the large fanbase that does actually enjoy the franchise. The "big finale" isn't exactly the moment to set out and make your own little psychological horror film with the Halloween name slapped on it

Nobody goes into a final film in a series wanting something different

They want satisfying conclusion to what came before

Awful film. My least favorite Halloween film (yes, the crappy Resurrection is more enjoyable; this excludes the 2 Zombie films as well) that is my biggest cinematic disappointment of the year.

So not only did Green not understand how to properly wrap up this trilogy and franchise, he also was incapable of figuring out what made the 2018 film so successful. If you can't determine what makes some of your movies better than others, then you should reconsider your approach to filmmaking. And they marketed it as a final showdown, even though they knew from the get-go that is not what the fans were getting. So he and his writing time were the wrong group to handle closing this franchise out. And you know what, I place some of the blame on Blum and Blumhouse. They knew what the script was, and they still greenlit it. For someone that likes to portray himself as the modern day puppet master of horror films, and an advocate of old school horror from the 80s, Jason Blum should have known better.

I wish this film had never been made, but unfortunately the cat's out of the bag.

@HeavyMetal4Life - It truly was awful, and the thing that drives me mad is Green seems to be fully self aware that he made a film that no one would like - according to himself! Warning your actors that people are going to hate the film you're about to put out is not a recipe for success.

@ThorArms - preach buddy, preach! And I keep seeing ads for Ends on the tv, and they focus on the film being Michael vs Laurie- false advertising because they know that's the film people wanted to watch.

What the...? What are you even talking about?

Yeah, sure, nothing says doing something ambitious like doing something that doesn't fit or make sense for the story or characters. Why even bother making a Halloween movie, when you clearly had no interest in the actual Halloween conflict you'd set up?

Love story? Having a female character, maybe, be an idiot for a murderer and potential psychopath, is a love story, to you?

Why do people think they're more creative than they are and just produce whatever, without consideration of sense or consistency? This feels like TLJ all over again. Thinking it's ambitious, but doing nothing that has real structure or new-ness in relevance to the overall story.
LeonNova

Well if that was never his intention, then it was really disingenuous to market the film that way. As for what he ended up doing, I’m not against filmmakers being subversive, but a f****** love story? He’s out of his mind to think fans were going to be satisfied with that. He took a risk and it didn’t pay off. Debuting below expectations, 80% drop and performing behind Smile on week 2, low scores from critics and fans alike. Definitely a failure of an ending to the story.

You know why people didn't like that Michael was replaced by a man? Obviously because they're sexist and hate women.
