HALLOWEEN KILLS To Get Extended Cut With New Ending; Judy Greer Talks SPOILERS

This article contains MASSIVE SPOILERS for Halloween Kills, so proceed with caution!

Halloween Kills is finally here, and while the reception from critics and fans alike has been mixed (to say the least), it seems director David Gordon Green and the team behind the film were always somewhat aware that the ending could be divisive. While there aren't any plans to retcon what happened, they will be adding an epilogue of sorts in the not-so-distant future.

In a recent interview with Collider, Green confirmed that the upcoming home video release of the film will include an extended cut with a new ending that will append the current finale. He explains,

"There's actually, we're going to do a...This is the director's cut through and through, but there's an additional scene that we filmed that was scripted. And actually I think is a pretty brilliant scene. So we're going to do an extended version on the DVD, just so people can see an extended ending that's different and cool. We ended up lifting it when I became more confident of where we're going to pick up in the next movie, it felt it didn't feel authentic to where we're going to go. So we lifted it. So we just said, we're kind of coming up with, okay, then if we lift that, where do we end? And it was actually Couper Samuelson at Blumhouse, he was just, let's just end when it's over. Lights out. He mentioned it, he was like remember in Rogue One, when you wanted the movie to end? When it was a Darth Vader going ballistic at the door."

While the film's current ending, which sees Michael Myers survive yet again before going home to deliver a fatal blow to Karen (Judy Greer) and setting the stage for an epic showdown with longtime nemesis Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), won't be changed, it looks like the new scene will provide some added context for what's to come next year.

"It's part of the movie. It's just not part of the appropriate momentum of... I think it was cool in its own right as watching a one-off movie, but knowing where we're going to exactly where we're going to pick up which, you'll know in a year, it wasn't the right look in the eye that we needed to give the audience."

Speaking of Judy Greer, The Hollywood Reporter was recently able to catch up with the fan-favorite Archer and Arrested Development actress to get her initial reaction to learning her character's tragic fate.

"Well, I was bummed to see the ending. I thought it was a good idea, though. I thought it was really beautifully written, and it felt like a dance, like an opera, kind of. But it was also a little bit of a bummer, mostly because I like to play with my friends. I learned a lot about the way that they shot that final fight scene with Michael Myers and the townspeople. Listening to David talk about it was really interesting, and it was cool to watch it knowing technically how they did it and how they made it look so special. So I watch it now and I’m in awe of our crew."

Co-star Andi Matichak, who plays Greer's on-screen daughter Allyson, expressed a similar sentiment, also understanding the creative decision, but being just as bummed about not getting to work with Judy on the next one.

"I was gutted in a lot of ways. (Laughs.) Especially because you almost have three finales back to back to back. You feel like you get out unscathed, you feel like you get out triumphant, and then you get crushed in a lot of regards. It’s a really beautiful ending in a lot of ways, and I agree with Judy. It’s, unfortunately, the right move, which sucks, but they really made it pretty poetic and pretty powerful."

Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor.

But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster.

The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all.

Evil dies tonight.

That...made me miss the cult of thorn lol.

It's not bad, just so middle chapter it was irritating.

I will say, this movie had one of the most brutal killings of a character I've seen.

But also, one of the most mean spirited killings I've seen

@DannRamm113 - haven’t watched it but you just reminded me of the guy getting his limbs twisted in excruciating fashion on some Saw movie, and that’s when I quit Saw. So mean. For what?

@TheWalkingCuban - The name of that trap was called The Rack. It was the most brutal saw death in all of the films.

@regularmovieguy - that was something!

I was on the boyfriend getting crushed for a minute before Michael snaps his neck.

Oh also the mean spirited is the mental pt

@DannRamm113 - More than the one in Terrifier? Though the low budget made it less gruesome.

@TheWalkingCuban - "For what?" you may ask? It's for the sake of torture-porn. Either the creative team of the movie is into that sort of stuff or, they THINK their audience will be really into it.

It's as blatant and uncomplicated as that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Michael being active only on Halloween works best in my opinion. Him going into a mental hibernation until the next Halloween would be how I imagine his rage and brutality. So him going home on November 1st made sense but him somehow transcending into this godly being who somehow feeds on killing is kind of ridiculous again. Supernatural Michael is arguably the worst of the slashers. Human Michael is the most terrifying.

@SonOfAGif - I’ve never understood this idea of a human Michael in a Halloween sequel. I don’t care how impervious to pain and how strong a man is no one is surviving what happens to Michael in the first Halloween. You can’t just walk that off.

@SonOfAGif -

I dont mind Michael being superhuman as long as they don't try to explain it. The original film he took 6 shots, stabbed in the eye and stomach but kept on getting up. Would be cool if he just goes into a coma by november 1st until next year

@SonOfAGif - I really dont like how they are trying to tie his abilities to his mask. Michael took it from a hardware store in the original because he needed to hide his identity theres no hidden power in it.

Well, I saw it last night, and all I can say is that's probably the hardest I've laughed with a movie all year. I don't know if it was just me, but this movie reached unintentionally funny territory several times.

Oh, and RIP HARRY STYLES

The dialogue was poor, some of their actions made no sense, scenes/dialogue contradicted each other. The Big John, Little John parts were just bizarre, no disrespect to Michael MacDonald lol

Based on what ive read this is basically a filler movie

Barely anything happens to add to Laurie’s story

Nothing is acomplished

Only thing of note is they kill Laurie’s daughter and some of the original film’s characters

Laurie spends the whole movie in the hospital

Seriously seems like they just did a trilogy despite the original plan to just film the previous and one other movie back to back, cause yeah this film adds nothing that couldnt have been included in the next

I'm going to have to rewatch it again to figure out exactly how I feel about it. I will say it oddly felt like it wasnt made by the same director who did the 2018 film. I dont know if DGG wanted to try something completely new, but the film is shot in an 80s B movie vibe. 2018 had a very real world feel to it whereas this one felt like part of it was filmed on a backlot somewhere with all the fake fog and weird editing. The mob storyline sounded great on paper, but made me hate so many of the characters by the end (Tommy and Brackett). Love Judy, but Karen was just straight annoying and I was actually glad about her getting got by Michael in the end.

Also wanted to say after Midnight Mass and now Halloween kills Robert Longstreet (Lonnie) is becoming one of my favorite "That guy" actors. He was way more likable then Tommy, makes me wish they would have given him more to do then get killed off screen.

@CurlyBill - I liked the 1st half of the 2018 film. The 2nd half felt like the majority of "Kills." Unfunny humor, pointless character following and kills were mostly unimpressive.
CurlyBill
CurlyBill - 10/15/2021, 10:39 PM
@Nightmare - The humor of 2018 really bothered me the first time I saw it, but after rewatching it in preparation most of the humor landed alot better that time around. Kills just felt like it didnt know what type of film it wanted to be, a violent slasher throwback our a somber reflection on what a horrible crime can do to a small town, and both ideas came off as half baked.
