We finally got a new trailer for Halloween Kills last night, and along with all the extreme violence, screaming and bloody mayhem, the teaser included a not-so-subtle hint that a divisive plot point from the original film series might be reintroduced.
No, we're not talking about the reveal that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is really Michael Myers' sister (that particular twist will likely stay dead and buried), but the possibility that "The Shape" may now be explicitly supernatural in nature.
The ending of John Carpenter's original made it very clear that Myers was far more than your average psychopathic serial killer when Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) filled him with bullets to no avail. From there, the character began to embody an indestructible killing machine more in each sequel until things reached really silly levels in Halloween 6 with the introduction of a satanic cult.
David Gordon Green's 2018 revival appeared to dial things back to a degree and make Myers a normal - if very hard-to-kill - human being, but Laurie suggests that may not be the case in the trailer when she states that no "flesh and blood" man could have survived that fire, pointing out that "the more he kills, the more he transcends."
Is this simply a traumatized woman reaching the only conclusion she can in an effort to rally the people of Haddonfield to her cause, or will Halloween Kills make Michael Myers a literal boogeyman? We'll have to wait until August to find out for sure.
Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.
Halloween Kills slices its way into theaters this October.
