When the original Halloween was being made in 1978, the production team created the killer's iconic disguise by simply purchasing a William Shatner mask, distressing it and painting it. Subsequent films attempted to replicate the iconic visage to varying degrees of success.

Whilst discussing the upcoming sequel to the original film with Halloween News Daily; Christopher Nelson, one of the film's makeup artists, recently detailed the process of creating a mask for the new film and the changes audiences should expect.

The film takes place 40 years later, so you’re not going to have that same mask, it’s not going to be this pristine, beautiful thing that it was in 1978. You have to approach it from that standpoint. I had 40-year-old masks that I studied and looked at how they broke down, how they wrinkled, how they did this and how they did that. I also took into account the context of the film. Where is the mask now and where has it been for these 40 years? Without revealing anything, I took that into context. I had hundreds of photos and books.

The original prop was used in 1981's Halloween II before being retired. It was recently unearthed, late last year, and is pretty deteriorated.

I mostly really wanted to capture that feeling you got when you saw Michael Myers. I was also talking to [director] David [Gordon Green] about how we were going to shoot it, and being very careful about it, very strategic about it, looking back at [original film director John] Carpenter and [director of photography] Dean Cundey and how they did that. That’s how I approached the mask.

I wanted to create the character of Michael Myers, not just the mask. You’re not creating just a mask. You’re creating a character. You’re creating a feeling that you get that does have an expression. The mask does have an expression, but also the mask looks completely different in every single angle it’s ever been photographed at, and I wanted that feeling too. I wanted the feeling that when you saw Michael Myers, it morphs, it changes, it looks different from every single angle, like the original one did. I can safely say we accomplished that.

We'll get a good look at the all-new mask in action when the upcoming Halloween sequel hits theaters on October 19th. What do you think about the upcoming sequel so far?

God...it's going to be good to have Mikey back. I needed a hot shower and a lot of booze after I saw the second Zombie movie.

Michael Myers- Jason Voorhies - Freddy Krueger - Chucky - Pinhead - The tall man ( phantasm ) will always be my horror movie Justice League . They can make thousands of these movies and I will never get tired of Jason chasing kids through the woods

Sounds like he's describing Rorschach more than Michael Myers, but I'll keep an open mind.

The mask, especially in that first film was absolutely brilliant. I don't think the film would have been anywhere near as classic if that mask hadn't worked.

It was like he didn't have a head. Like it was just a mask. You couldn't see his eyes. You didn't even know if he had eyes. The Shape was a very fitting name for the villain of Halloween. Michael Myers was they name he had before he killed his sister almost 50 years ago, but he became something else after that. I can't wait for Laurie to take him on again.

I LOVE Laurie Strode. When you say horror movie heroine, Laurie takes that name to a whole new level. She is so badass. She was terrified at first, but then she FOUGHT BACK. I cannot wait for this film.

The fact that they are replicating the same mask and making it look like it would forty years after The Shape's first killing spree is absolutely intriguing to me. I remember I had a Darth Maul mask in 1999 for Halloween. I saw it years later, it was a mess. It was falling apart in places and I had to throw it away. I can only imagine what The Shape's mask looks like. The Shape's new face is probably going to be even more terrifying than it already was.

After Halloween 1, id say Halloween 6 had the best mask.

@Shmokey20 - For sure. Aside from the crazy hair, it looked like the original Michael mask. No idea how the masks in 4 and 5 could be so off.

So f'ing excited for this! I'm so glad they're going back to the basics and making Michael scary.

They're ignoring pretty much everything after the original- which I really like, and think is the best thing they can do rn....But then again I understand why some people aren't too fond of the idea.

If this succeeds and becomes the "It" of this year (or even "Get Out"), I'll be damn sure we'll see a brand new Friday the 13th & Nightmare on Elm street in the works.

Also Halloween 6 is super underrated, Michael is actually pretty terrifying in that one. Especially that scene where friggin Paul Rudd is trying to break open a door to free his friend WHILE Michael creepliy walks up to him to stop them. I'd post the video but I'm on my damn phone -.-

@JohnMarston220 - I like 6 in the same way that I like 4 and 5. They're all pretty scary and have a B movie charm. The only thing that makes 6 the worst of those bunch is the thorne nonsense. I still like it though. I like that they're ignoring everything, even 2. I like 2, don't get me wrong, but that undoes Laurie being his sister. It also shortens his killing spree that night, but making her not his sister will be refreshing. Part of what makes the original so scary is that he just picks these random girls. They could've been anyone.

@Termin8er - Oh I agree, didn't care for any of that Thorne stuff but I did like their version of Michael in it, so ruthless.

I've loved every Halloween, except RZ's Halloween 2- great opening though.

I know a teaser is in the works but I'm having a hard time figuring out what movie they'd attach with.

@JohnMarston220 - For sure. When he kills that piece of sh!t step dad or whatever? Love that. I shamelessly like them all too lol. I prefer 4 - 6 to H20 and Resurrection, and in 4 - 6 I'd have to say 4 is my favorite. got some great ideas in it. Not all done very well, but overall, very fun and creepy movie. I actually never saw Zombie's Halloween 2. I loved his first one. Not as a Halloween movie, but as a horror movie in general. I always viewed it as a great horror movie that should've had a different main character. And as much as I love horror movies I'm not up to date with any coming out soon. No idea what they'd attach the teaser to.
