BOX OFFICE: Iron Man 3 Earns $68.31 Million on Friday, on Track for 2nd Highest Opening Weekend

Iron Man 3 earned an impressive $68.31 million on Friday. Although this is significantly lower than the Avengers, it is much higher than the total for Iron Man 2. According to Box Office Mojo, if this continues, we will see Iron Man edge out Harry Potter for the record for second largest opening weekend.

Box Office Mojo has the official numbers for Iron Man 3's Friday hall. According to it, the Marvel threequel earned $68.31 million. This puts it at number 8 for top single day grosses. Calling Iron Man's take "massive," Box Office Mojo noted that this number fell significantly behind The Avengers' $80.8 million. However, it was significantly larger than Iron Man 2's $51.2 million.

If Iron Man 3 continues to perform like this, Box Office Mojo estimates that it will have a weekend gross somewhere between $170 and $175 million. This puts it significantly below The Avengers' $207.44 million. However, a gross in this range would be high enough to edge Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from the number 2 spot ($169.19 million).

If this end up happening, then four of the five top opening weekends would belong to comic book movies (with The Avengers, Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight taking the first, second, fourth and fifth spots, respectively).

What do you think? Is Box Office Mojo spot on? Will Iron Man 3 take the #2 spot?

This will definitely be in the top 10 highest grossing movies, possibly even top 5...

Iron Man 3 is currently #160...

I think it will end up being #5, behind Avatar, Titanic, Avengers, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

It will be the 16th movie to make $1 billion...

......... Now, how much will Thor: TDW make???

Thor: TDW won't be a blockbuster hit. That being said, it will make more than Thor. All it really has going for it is comic fans, the fact he was in Avengers, hardcore Doctor Who fans and Game of Thrones fans. I'll be at he 12:01 showing (9pm now... The [frick] lol. That's just stupid, the point was to see it exactly at the release date). But I don't believe too many people will care. Unless Disney helps tremendously and advertises the shit out of it.

@TGFIBOCBM: I think Thor: The Dark World, as you said, will make more and between future advertising and the trailer being attached to Iron Man 3, it's guaranteed to be a hit. Maybe not Iron Man 3 big but, definitely a blockbuster.

Despite that I know pretty much everything that goes on in the movie, I'm still gonna be seeing it in the theater. Dad comes home next weekend, more likely will see it with him. Got no cash or ride to see it anyways. Can't wait.
