Christopher Nolan And Robert Downey Jr. Reflect On Their Marvel And DC Experiences

For a long time, Robert Downey Jr. was synonymous with the MCU and Iron Man, while director Christopher Nolan was intrinsically linked with Warner Bros. and Christian Bale's Batman.

Director Christopher Nolan and actor Robert Downey Jr. stopped by a number of outlets to promote their upcoming biographical thriller film, Oppenheimer.

Oftentimes, the pair were interviewed together, which prompted questions about their time at the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Batman franchise, respectively.

Indeed, if you were around on the site back in the day, the height of the Marvel vs. DC flamewars centered around Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

Iron Man was released on May 8, 2008, and was the talk of the town until The Dark Knight hit on July 18, 2008. For many years after, the comment section around these parts could sometimes be hot to the touch.

Jumping back to present day, Nolan was a recent guest on MTV correspondent Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast and shared his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr.'s turn as Iron Man. Apparently, he's a big fan.

"When Favreau had the insight to cast him as Iron Man, it was one of the greatest casting decisions in the history of movies," said Nolan.

High praise, indeed.

Elsewhere, the pair were jointly interviewed by Wired, where RDJ was asked what a Christopher Nolan Avengers movie would look like.

"If Christopher Nolan had directed The Avengers, we'd still be shooting it," said Downey, a nod to the fact that Nolan does not like to use CG in his films. For his part, Nolan asked Downey if he would be prepared to get on a real-life jetpack.

The full Wired interview is below, and it's a must-watch.

Downey also spoke with IMDB, where he revealed that he was initially a bit intimidated to join the film given Nolan's mystique, but he quickly realized once he arrived on set that Nolan was, "Christopher is arguably one of the least judgmental directors I have ever experienced... It's not about control; it's about precision."

When asked about how Nolan responded to Downey's well-known penchant for improvisation, Downey stated, "[Nolan] did say, 'Robert, you seem to be doing a lot of improv out there; if you get scared out there, just float gently back to the text.'"

[Note: These interviews were conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which officially commenced on July 14, 2023, at midnight.]

Oppenheimer is the best movie of the year and the best movie of Nolan's career. I'll be very surprised if RDJ doesn't sweep best supporting actor. Will be thinking about the final shot for a very long time

@tmp3 - How big is his part, I've been wondering? I know it's a very stacked film, but I've been curious about that from the get go.

@MosquitoFarmer - He's the second most prominent member of the cast given that the black & white sections are from his POV.

@MosquitoFarmer - he's in it for a majority of the movie, and he plays a perfect person you want to punch in the face. Top to bottom, it's Nolans best movie. You can see all of ism's on full display. It feels like a truly perfect movie. 70mm imax changed me forever

@bobevanz - and the score, truly phenomenal. I'm big on Violin as my emotional driver for music, and it's in every piece. It can be jolly, contempt, sad, and horrifying.

@tmp3 - so I'll say awards for adapted screenplay, director, best picture, actor, supporting actor, visual effects, score, and editing. If not we riot

@tmp3 - he may get nommed but he won't win. He's not in the film enough.

@McMurdo - Anthony Hopkins won best actor for Silence of The Lambs.

He’s in the movie for the a total of 16 minutes.

@MosquitoFarmer - to me, he's the second lead...or, at least, main supporting character.
CloakDagger
CloakDagger - 7/23/2023, 7:11 AM
@McMurdo - there've been a number of winners in the past, who've spent a lot lesser time on screen for their Oscar win.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 7/23/2023, 9:08 AM
@CloakDagger - I'm pleasantly surprised because the trailers showed only a quick glimpse or two of him, and maybe a brief voiceover here or there. So to here he's more prominent in it is nice to hear.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/23/2023, 12:33 PM
@DTor91 - and he stole the film, arguably. Comparing RDJ in Opp compared to the role of Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs just isn't comparable. Hopkins was on another level in that film.

It is pretty fun seeing Downey post-Iron Man, as much as his presence is missed in the MCU.

It's a delightful interview. I haven't seen Nolan smile, let alone laugh, this much before. Hopefully, we'll see him work with RDJ again. And when the hell will we see Christian Bale back in a Nolan flick? Make it happen.

I liked wired interviews, but let's be honest here lol we only got an Oppenheimer article today because of Iron Man..

I think Oppenheimer is a masterpiece of movie making! Christopher Nolan is a story telling genius! Robert Downey Jr. gave an amazing performance that may be the best of his career. If the Oscars snub these two achievements, then it will lose all credibility.

A Christ Nolan-directed Avengers movie would be like a mish-mash of The Ultimates (minus the edgy humor of Mark Millar) and The New Avengers run. He's already made a superhero team-up movie; it was called Inception. And yeah, he knows how to do it.

But speaking of Iron Man, he would be perfect for it, too. A good adaptation of Extremis/Haunted from him would work like a charm.

This man Nolan said if he directed Iron Man he would've had RDJ strap himself to an actual jet pack 😆😆😆

Considering how DC and Marvel fans fought each other back in the summer of 2008 when all of this began, and now we are in the twilight of the genre, this exchange feels like this:

@TheHumanSpider2 - I used to be a stupid ass shill for anything Marvel back then. Now idc about either side, I just want good movies.

It’s amazing in this day and age that a movie about the life of a theoretical physicist and a movie about a beloved blonde doll became big summer hits and beat the shit out of the Flash… which should have been a sure fire summer blockbuster hit but thanks to an awful and poorly written script, a mediocre director, cgi straight out of an Xbox game from 2005 and terrible acting from Miller The(y) Flash, as Ian Malcolm put it, was one big pile of shit.

bobevanz
bobevanz - 7/22/2023, 4:26 PM
@LucasTurkeyNeck - I didn't know we were talking about Flash here lol
LucasTurkeyNeck
LucasTurkeyNeck - 7/22/2023, 7:40 PM
@bobevanz - what? I was just saying that two movies that would not be considered typical summer blockbusters beat a film that SHOULD have been a summer blockbuster.

And Oppenheimer was quite great. Would love to find the chance to see it again if possible.
