AVENGERS Star Robert Downey Jr. Confirms He's Open To Playing Iron Man Again: "[Kevin Feige] Will Always Win"

Avengers: Endgame star Robert Downey Jr. has confirmed he would be willing to play Iron Man again, making it clear he has faith in Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's vision. Read on for details...

Robert Downey Jr. first played Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man, putting a spin on the superhero which elevated him from the B-List and made the Armoured Avenger the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor bid farewell to the role with 2019's Avengers: Endgame and has since set his sights on more serious fare; that includes a role in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, a project which earned Downey a "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar.

Rumours continue to swirl that we'll see the Academy Award winner return as a villainous Iron Man Variant in Avengers: Secret Wars and Downey now tells Esquire that he hasn't closed the door on playing Tony again.

"Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA," Downey said of a possible return. "That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win."

Feige has said that the Iron Man who died in Avengers: Endgame won't return be seen again because Marvel Studios is "going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again." He'd add, "We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way."

That doesn't rule out a Multiversal Variant, though, does it?

Elsewhere in this cover story, Pepper Potts actress Gwyneth Paltrow reflected on her and Downey's unique MCU collaborations.

"There would be this process of [director] Jon Favreau and Robert and I going into Jon’s trailer in the morning and Robert being like, 'I’m not f*cking saying these lines' and throwing them out," she remembered. "And then live improv-ing either in the trailer or on the set."

"I think in order for something to feel alive for Robert, it has to feel fresh, and he makes it fresh by making it feel like it was just invented. So many of those famous lines were written ten minutes before we said them."

Paltrow has also said she's be willing to play Pepper again, albeit not without Downey by her side. "Oh my god, stop yelling at me" she joked last September. "We just stopped doing it because Iron Man died. And, why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man? I don’t know. Call up Marvel and yell at them, not me. I’m just sitting here."

What role would you like to see Iron Man play in the Multiverse Saga? Let us know in the comments section.

@Order66 - Realistically there is now a branched timeline where Thanos (2014) traveled to the future (2023) and died in battle. This would negate the events of Infinity War from ever happening in that timeline.

@JonC - I was saying the same thing, he was thinking about Jack Black. I think I would die laughing if RDJ returned as a variant and he played the character as a black Tony Stark. Give us Tropic Thunder 2.

If he had to, then i'd be ok with a flashback, but the ending was perfect! i'd be hesitant for a return.

The MCU lost a lot of fans then Tony died; people literally quit watching any of it.

@TheVisionary25 - @LSHF I feel like that’s natural for a culmination of 11 years some will get off the train. Although I’ve liked almost everything since endgame, it’s up to marvel to pick up a new generation of fans and this far I don’t believe they have.

@MyCoolYoung - they might have since new generation imo means kids moreso but I get yah

It was the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another , if you ended there then it could work.

@MyCoolYoung - also I too have enjoyed everything post EG to one extent or another

There’s been something for me to enjoy in everything so far even if it can be inconsistent in quality (which contrary to popular belief isn’t new to the MCU).

@TheVisionary25 - in an alternate universe the MCU ended with Tony’s funeral
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 4/8/2024, 12:39 PM
@TheVisionary25 - 100% not new. The MCU just went on a run of some really good movies and people acted like they weren’t torn on the dark world and some others

@MyCoolYoung - totally agree. There were so many casual audience memebers that just werent into comics that weree just hanging on to see how the story ended. Plus since this was the first time anything like this experiment was done in movie history you cant replicate the first time.

@krayzeman - man I waited an hour and a half in the waiting rooms for endgame tickets and was so excited to actually get them. If that’s ever duplicated again I promise I want to be there

@SuperCat - Zombie Iron Man would be so cool, I am hoping that if they adapt parts of Hickman's Secret Wars, that they make battle World a patchwork planet. So you can have part of it Marvel Zombies and when they enter the Marvel Horror Land it's filmed in black and white like Werewolf By Night and the characters that enter it turn black and white.

That’s interesting because I thought some people felt he had been thrashing Marvel or looking down at the genre after his Oppenheimer success..

Even though his comments clearly were about him making people realize again that he isn’t just Tony Stark and can not only play those type of characters but I digress…;).

Anyway , I wouldn’t want our Tony back since I felt he was given a good ending but I can’t say that I’m not curious to see Downey play a Superior Iron Man-esque variant because it would be so delicious to see him be bad!!.

@TheVisionary25 - what would your thoughts be on him showing back up as Iron Man in the rumoured rebooted universe?

I feel like I'd be okay with it, as long as there is a clear distinction that he is technically a new Tony Stark, and not the same one who died. Same goes for Chris Evans as Cap, etc... I really want to see the true Avengers line up stick around, even if they're in the background. Recasting them would work as well I guess, but bringing the original actors back in a new continuity with clearly different "origins" I think would be cool.

If we do get a new singular universe after secret wars, I kind of hope there's a brain wipe and it's literally a new existence for all these people. That way they can retread some of the same plot lines but with new ideas, and so on without it seeming too familiar.
