Gary Oldman in Iron Man 2?

News and photos from the set of Iron Man 2 started leaking out on Monday and today it was revealed that brilliant character actor Gary Oldman visited the set.

Insider sources on the Iron Man 2 set recently reported a visit by Garry Shandling, the hilarious actor and comedian of It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and the satirical late night talk show spoof, The Larry Sanders Show. It has been rumored that Shandling will appear as Senator Stern, the character in the X-Men mythos who uses his political power to champion the Mutant Registration Act.

Now, according to IESB, Gary Oldman, the chameleonic actor who became famous playing gruesome villains in True Romance, The Professional and The Fifth Element, and who recently portrayed Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight, has been spotted on the set. There was no speculation about what character (if any) Oldman will portray or how long he will be on set, especially considering the fact that he is currently filming The Book of Eli.

This wouldn’t be the first time that an actor appearing in a major motion picture based upon a character from one of the "big two" comic book companies made the leap to a film based on a character from the competition. James Marsden portrayed Marvel Comics’ Cyclops in all three X-Men films and then appeared in DC Comics’ Superman Returns as Lois Lane’s love interest.

+1
looks like he could play a cool howard hughs like father of that eara.

If its in a wuick flash back scene then he would not need a shit load of time and could probably knock it out in one days time.

Look like they are keeping the formula right...Go Marvel Go !!!!

The guy is a legend! When you see him in a role you don't see Gary Oldman playing a version of himself, you just see the character. To do that in one or two movies is excellent but he does it at every single turn! Any movie with him in is worth a look (yes, even Potter).

yeah sometimes he's so good at portraying his role that it takes me a moment to realize it's gary oldman.

Wow!! It would be great if they could get Gary Oldman in Iron Man 2. I think he would be a cameo at the end as Mandarin for Iron Man 3. They did say they were making a trilogy.

Gotta love the Oldman. Very curious as to who he would be in Iron Man 2..if anyone! He could easily just been snapped visiting the set. Mandarin..maybe, i would hope they wouldnt switch a characters nationality like that but you never know with comic book movies!

Gary Oldman could bring something viable to any character in any film, he is that good. Check out his performance in True Romance, and he got to kill Samuel L!

Maybe he was just there for acting tips from Gwenyth...

Just wanted to put this out there. I don't ever remember there being a Senator Stern in the X-Men books. There is s Senator Kelly, who supported the Mutant Registration Act. That character appeared in the X-Men movie. Furthermore, why would they use a character from the X-Men? Doesn't really make sense to me. And finally, 20th Century Fox owns the rights to all characters related to the X-Men movies wise. Iron Man is being made by Marvel Studios so there can't be a crossover there.

He looks like an older RDJ in that pick, so he might be playing the part of tony's dad instead of tim robbins.

Gary Oldman is just too kool. Loved him as Dracula, Commishoner Gordan, and in The Professional. He's just an all-around good actor. I don't expect to see him in Iron Man 2, but if he is, I won't complain.

Is that picture from the IM2 set??

and the "James Marsden portrayed Marvel Comics’ Cyclops in all three X-Men films and then appeared in DC Comics’ Superman Returns as Lois Lane’s love interest"

mmaaan!! worst possible example ever!!! Because when Bryan Singer ran away from the X-trilogy, James Marsden/Cyclops said like:
Hey Bryan wait!, i´ll go with you!.. and Bryan said: Oh, ok James c´mon let´s go..i have the perfect role for you (he did a good job btw, and also i loved his cyclops-no pun intended-, and i also think they didn´t give him enough screen time in the 3 movies)

How possible could you compare GaRY Oldman leaving behind Gordon´s role and go straight with the competition?
My bet: Gary O was just visiting..mmmh

Yeah, it wasn't the best example. How about Helle Berry as both Storm AND Catwoman.

I hope Gary has some other part than Howard Stark, but whoever he is will be fine. He doesn't look very Mandarin-ish to me though.

Just visiting, I think.

Or maybe he went to give Downey what for about about his dissing of TDK.

@SirJediFrank

I don't think James Marsden had much choice when following Singer. You should always lube up 1st ;-). Ok, I mean no offense, truth is (like you said) JM did a good job in all those movies, just needed more screen time.

Howlett04: I don´t know what " You should always lube up 1st ;-)" means.. let me check..

"lube [loob]
North America Australia (informal)
noun
Same as lubricant (sense 1) " HAHA OOOK! ok but you refer to JM right? or me? haha.

On a second thought, about Gary O,you know, J Favreau has talked maybe a little too much about PROBABLE castings, opposite to Sam Raimi who tries to keep it quietly.

Then MAYBE GARY OLDMAN IS IN TALKS, but he didn´t want anybody to know about it until they reached an agreement. then he goes to the set to talk with JF and VOILÁ: everybody noticed!!

If that is true, that means that the scenes that would involve Gary O (whatever the part he would play) are yet to be filmed. i mean, at least a month or weeks away.

JK Simmns would be great as Howard Stark. Yes, I realize he's already JJ Jameson.

The studios and actors need to stick to 1 comic book character per actor. Gary is Commissioner Gordon and that is the only comic book character he should play. Every time i see him in Ironman I'll think there's the commissioner.
Bijous
Bijous - 4/13/2009, 4:35 PM
I'm okay with him being in two superhero movies! You gotta go with the best actor for the part! I didn't even think of Cyclops when I saw Marsden in Superman.
bsprecher
bsprecher - 4/14/2009, 12:36 AM
@SirJediFrank: How is that the worst example ever? The X-Men franchise is (and has been) the most profitable comic book series in Marvel history and Superman is the longest-running comic in history. Granted, Marsden the actor doesn't have the chops to compete with Oldman, but he made a jump from one high-profile comic-to-film project to another high-profile comic-to-film project (from a competing comic book company source, no less).
