Because of the undeniably amazing box office success 2008's 'Iron Man' accomplished, many analysts and movie goers became positive that the sequel to the film would prove to be a bigger success in theaters. Surprisingly, that may not be the case.

LA Times says that as 'Iron Man 2' nears the conclusion of its theatrical run, it has made $307 million in both the U.S. and Canada. However, 'Iron Man' left theaters with an astonishing $309 million.

Interestingly, 'Iron Man 2' opened to $128.1 million while 'Iron Man' opened to $98.6 million. Why did 'Iron Man 2' eventually downfall?

It is likely due to the fact that 'Iron Man 2' was panned by many which may have kept some people from checking the film out.

Cant say what the domestic total will be, but if you include internationally its already made more than $20 million more.

according to box office mojo,

Iron Man
Domestic: $318,412,101
+ Foreign: $266,762,121
= Worldwide: $585,174,222

Iron Man 2
Domestic: $306,943,647
+ Foreign: $303,000,000
= Worldwide: $609,943,647

so its a little less domestic, but much more foreign...
i say its doing pretty dran good and as you can see, the worldwide totals are much more than the original!

nearly $25 million more!!!

IM1 is one of my all-time favorite movies. IM2 was forgettable. You won't hear IM2 refered to as a classic comicbook staple that topped its predecessor n every way like Spider-Man 2, X2, and TDK. So it makes sense I guess...

Panned by many? Who? ALL of the pre-release reviews I read were glowingly positive! Most of them gave the film 4 stars!

Gimme a break! This is non-news! The two films basically matched each other's gross, which is amazing considering the amount we're talking about here! Are we jaded enough that $2m makes that much of a difference?!?

Oh, well. Guess we'll have to cancel "Avengers". LOLOLOL!!!

Seriously though, I think the choice of villain kept this movie from exploding on the level of "The Dark Knight"! It certainly was poised to!

Yea i agree with conformist21, Ironman I didnt have as much competition as Ironman II has, which could have some effect on the price drop. I'm not really sure which one is better in my opinion, I think both of them have certain parts that dominate over the other but overall they are pretty even. I just can't wait for the Avengers movie! Its going to be amazing

Wow this article is hilarious. You're trying to make the movie seem like a financial failure. I'm sure the studios are really sad about a movie making $307 million. : ) I enjoyed both films quite a bit. Add in all the marketing and everything else; there's no way this could be seen as anything but a success. Anyway, I'm not thinking anyone's doing the "what went wrong" thing in their heads.

It's not surprising. It was way overhyped and I didn't agree with the casting which is what scared me away from it. A few tweaks on the characters here and there for the sake of it and it's likely to be panned. I just hope there's lessons to be learned from this and the same mistake won't be repeated with the Avengers...hopefully.

@HelaGood - interesting statistics. It might be simply the economy. IM came out in May, 2008, when US unemployment was at 5.2%. IM2 came out in May, 2010. US unemployment rate was 9.5% in April, 2010.

I didn't think IM2 was quite as good as IM, but pretty close.

the reason was this fail

scarlet johnasson without russian accent one of two worst actress (jessica alba and jennifer garner) made the a russian accent,,, and what worth to bring her just for gave her 10 lines the Black Widow is an important character in the Marvel Universe i know A good actor doesn't need a lot to do to leave a big impression.

Emily Blunt would've been better i doubt she can do a Russian accent

or the following

Jessica Biel too hot for this

Gemma Arterton maybe

Natalie Portman great pick she is kind of hardworking actress and clearly she can do a accent

Jessica Alba already did an accent She was made that way.Max Guevera - Dark Angel bot no for her too brunette and can't

and Angelina Jolie we need money

other thing come one a ultimate nick fury + SLJ=

and a lot of iron man i know he is lead role but come on he gave head pain with his joke

so rush and no originality just take look at dark night
it took like 4 years to finished it and iron man took like 2 years that why dark night success

and i didn't know what mickey was doing and justin [frick]ed up this time i hope iron man 3 will be better

FYI This article is misleading, as Hela said

"Iron Man
= Worldwide: $585,174,222

Iron Man 2
= Worldwide: $609,943,647"

I guess the L.A times is wrong... Unless they were talking purely domestic. Even then, domestic totals don't mean what they used to. In reality they don't mean anything. Cash is cash, I doubt the studio cares what country it comes from.

The world doesn't end at are boarders America... lol

Wasn't as good as the first. It was still good, but it was built up to be the second coming of Super Hero movies and it didn't hit the mark.

I think many people did not expect much from Iron Man 1. So when people went and watched it they were blown away. I was, and watched the movie three times in theatres . I know I was not expecting it to be as good as it was. So, naturally I had higher expectations for the second film. Which I only saw once in theatres. I believe overall it was a huge success for a comic book movie. They are slowley imporving the quality of the movies. We have by far come along way since the first X-Men movie and even the first Spiderman film. I dont know, just my opinion. I think thats what happened to Transformers. I loved the first film but was not expecting anything but dissappointment because I was such an 80's cartoon lover. After I watched and loved the first film, I wanted to murder Bay after the second film. It was a crap script thrown together after the writers block and it showed onscreen. I only hope the third will redeem the franchise. I know they started well by not casting butterface I mean Megan fox.
CyberViking2000
CyberViking2000 - 6/28/2010, 4:47 PM
I thought it was as good as the first, just different because Stark had to share screen time with other Super-Heroes.

If $2 million is the difference between failure and astounding success, then it speaks more loudly about the system than the film itself.

@Tankgirl and Lee- How was this film not a success? $307 million dollars. I'm sure they are listing their regrets as we type while they're walking to the bank. Oh no, little jimmy won't get that third mansion in Europe!

@CyberViking2000- Exactly, people are just being silly.

No. Iron Man 2 was not as good. It was way over done. Now I don't know why non comic book readers disliked it so much but i had a lot of bones to pick with it.

IM2 has grossed $609,943,647 WW.

IM1 grossed $585,174,222.

What aren't you people getting about that? FYI Ironman 2 is still making money... It made 25 million more than the first film as of last weekend. Google's your friend.

continuezero - 6/28/2010, 5:06 PM
2 Million? 307 instead of 309? Wow how about they ease up on the weak "Viral" a la Dark Knight marketing they tried to do. At least the Dark Knight Viral sites had something going on and a bit of cryptic foreshadowing. The IM2 sites and other viral nods were weak at best...probably coulda made up the 2 mil in that budget somehow...

I am not sure if this was every where but ticket prices here in West Michigan went up a dollar and a quarter a ticket for regular movies and went up $3 for 3D movies just about two weeks before Iron Man 2 released. I have a few friends who still have not seen it because they said they wouldn't spend the extra money, and then a couple months go by and they are all buying Toy Story 3 tickets and Twilight tickets. I know a number of people who are going to blind buy the Blu-ray when it comes out though. So I just wonder how much that payed into the lackluster numbers here in the US. Also I am curious as to how well movies do next year when they pack in a million blockbusters into three months time.

JARREN CALLED IT!

And I have to say I'm surprised considering the release date was the same week as college finals in many states, that's a huge porportion of moviegoers (college kiddos).
Jeri

@ Skullboy

Black Widow didn't have an accent because that's her job. Its really that simple, and your doing yourself a disservice by not seeing the film.

Its every part as good as the first, they honestly could not have done the sequel any better. It was much better than I expected.

Who cares? The movie still did exceptionally well worldwide and was pretty damned good even if it didnt live up to the brilliance of the first movie! The fact is, figures like these pretty much guarantee Iron Man 3 so I'm more than ok with this! :P

Iron man Domestic $318,412,101 + Foreign $266,762,121= $585,174,222

@ckal- The easiest way is to go to photobucket.com find a pic you like and copy the html code into your post. There's a lot more complicated way on this site though if you wanted to post something from your computer.

@prinzjoker- That's how wars get started.

As for the $2 mil:

I personally enjoyed the movie and am also a fan of Marvel comics. If I enjoyed the Age of Apocalypse arc (alternate reality), I can enjoy this film. It's different from the original source, but I can see a mixture of different writers and events from Iron Man's history in IM2. That's how it should be IMHO. Was it perfect? No. Was it a pleasure to watch on screen? You betcha. There's a lot of people who reviewed the movie on this site that are fans who agreed. We can always go back to motorcycle helmet Cap, green painted Hulk, and Dolph Lundgren Punisher.

I bet if it had been in 3D it would have made 50 million more at least. Toy Story 3 is going to destroy Iron Man 2 and guess what? It's in 3D.
