Justin Theroux Reflects On IRON MAN 2 Woes And Why He Didn't Think THE AVENGERS Would Work

Iron Man 2 had a lot of set-up for The Avengers, and that's a big part of what made it such a disappointment. The writer weighs in on that and his doubts about the superhero ensemble which followed it.

Iron Man 2 is one of Marvel's more divisive movies, and the crammed screenplay is perhaps the reason for that. Introducing new characters, villains, an arc about Tony Stark dying, and lots of nods to The Avengers, there was just way too much going on. That's something screenwriter Justin Theroux seems to agree with as he acknowledged in a recent interview that things on the sequel didn't quite go the way they were hoping.

"You know, as happens very often, it is not easy to live up to expectations," he said. "And after the first ‘Iron Man,’ those for the sequel were extremely high. [You] go to see [the film] with a wealth of expectations…and the film had a release date even before we started working on it so we had to work fast. And I will not complain about anything or anyone, mind you…It was a team effort and I really love people like [Iron Man 2 director] Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. We tried to please the fans and to give shape to something spectacular…But sometimes things end up not going in the right direction, although there are parts of the movie that I’m really proud [of]."

Interestingly, Theroux then went on to explain why he initially had his doubts about the decision to make The Avengers, though he was thankfully proven wrong about that! "I remember at that time talking about The Avengers with [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige]. I remember that I told him, “I do not know if this is going to work, having Iron Man and all these characters together.” But then he ended up doing something really special."

I like Iron Man 2 and 3. The Only Marvel film that I disliked was Thor 2.
Cannot believe that Deadpool and BVS are so close.

@SimplyAz - I like Thor 2 more than incredible hulk and iron man 3, just a little more than Ant-Man too. I like the involvement of Thor's mother and her funeral was beautiful and emotionally well done

@xinstituto Fair enough, watched it with my missus and we both didn't like it.
Might give it another watch one day.

Still think Iron Man 2 gets somewhat of a bum rap. Mickey Rourke kind of phoned it in, and Justin Hammer was a little too cartoonish for my taste, but there's a lot of very good stuff in that movie IMO.

That's why the screen play sucked, he didn't believe in it. Personally I liked IM2. They could have done without the "Tony is dying" arc but it allowed them to do a watered down version of Demon in a Bottle.

I understand where he was coming from with regard to Avengers. The film could have easily been a disaster. Because they did so well the first time they attempted that kind of crossover, I think people take the achievement for granted.
