Was Union Jack Referenced in Iron Man 2?

Jon Favreau and crew managed to sneak another Easter egg into the superhero sequel; but it appeared to have gone largely unnoticed...

If there's one thing Marvel Studios has become renown for, it's their penchant for inserting a plethora of comic book references into their films; known by fans as Easter eggs. In the recently released Iron Man 2, the filmmakers have kicked it up a notch. The major references were blatantly obvious: Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer and an Incredible Hulk news report. It takes a sharp-eyed moviegoer to spot the minor ones; including references to comic characters Black Panther and Namor the Sub-Mariner.

But there was one nod to fans that was shown so quickly, it was very easy to miss. During the Monaco Grad Prix race, Justin Hammer is being interviews by reporter Christine Everheart when they notice Tony Stark on the race track. While they watched Tony jump into the Stark Industries sponsored car, a brief announcement on the screen caught my eye. Take a look at this screencap and see if you notice it:

Did director Jon Favreau intentionally name the #2 slotted British race car driver 'Chapman'? If he did, it's undoubtedly referencing Joey Chapman, the third super spy to don the mantle of Union Jack. Coincidentally, Chapman operates in modern Marvel continuity and has worked alongside Tony Stark several times. Could this be an allusion that one of the World War II era Union Jacks (Montgomery and Brian Falsworth) may appear in next year's Captain America: The First Avenger movie? I'd like to think so.

Yay, 5 days after the election and it looks like the UK finally has a Prime Minister! :P

ANIL: You know I've been dreaming of a Captain Britain movie for a loooong time bud! He may not be the most popular comic book character (because he's not handled that well IMO) but a movie has the poential to be amazing!

I found it funny that someone commented on this a day or two ago on one of the discussions here and no one responded at all. It appears that they weren't the only one who noticed it.

I'm calling Shananigans on the Incredible Hulk connection... If the events of Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 are supposed to be simultaneous how do you explain away the fact that at the end of Hulk Tony Stark is approaching Thunderbolt Ross on behalf of SHIELD and at the end of Iron Man 2 he is yet to be accepted into the club?

@Ranger14: i agree with you. Multi shouldnt be the only one given credit here, as he might just have read it in someone's comment here also at CBM and Multi just did an article bout it. Nice Find, Multi, but kuddos also to those who noticed it earlier on.

Orzosanis.....I think it's on the screen at the same time The Hulk report is, but there is a map of the globe with certain sections highlighted. A section in Africa and a section out in the middle of the ocean....obviously it wasn't immediately referenced and is speculation, but what the hell else could they have meant by either??

MULTI_ nice article, but:

@RANGER & WOLBERINE45: Yes, CBM´s fellow LouVman noted that Chapman-Union Jack Easter Egg at the "Why Was Captain America's Shield in Both Iron Man Movies?" thread:

http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Poniverse/news/?a=17997

-- " this is off topic but, Did any one else see the Union Jack easter egg.
In the Monco race scene the British flag is next to the driver named Chapeman the name of the current Union Jack"

But then again, if Lou´s comment or that scene inspired Multi to wite this article, well only Multi can tell!

I call shennanigans on multi. Awful big coincidence this comment appeared in another of his articles now we have this one. Although he is a slave for this stuff and has probably seen the movie more than any of us by now so it could be an independant discovery. Awful fishy though :)

Jk by the way

Sharp! Nice work MPP. Man it will be so sweet to see Union Jack in a movie!

Either him or Captain Brittain would be cool but I gotta admit that Union Jack is my favorite out of the two.
I dig the brawlers. The ones that have no or very little in the way of powers but they get in there and do damage anyway.

@superdog_ yes i don´t try to make Multi lool like a pretender os stuff, since as you mentioned, he is WAY into this CBM´s lore.. .

.. just wanted to give credit to Lou because he was THE FIRST (in chronological order) to post that Easter Egg.. and i wish to think that A POST HAS AS MUCH VALUE AS A FULL ARTICLE ITSELF (Tweeter comes to mind, right?) ;-)

If I remember correctly, on the maps in the background when Nick Fury is speaking to Tony Stark, there are indications of other 'hero' spottings. One is located in the UK, and another in the ocean between South America and Africa. References to Union Jack and the Black Panther?? Confirmation of your Easter Eggs Multi?
