JUSTICE LEAGUE Classic Cartoon SUPER FRIENDS Has Been Removed From Max Streaming Service

More content has been purged from Max, with classic Justice League animated series, Super Friends, no longer available to watch on the streaming platform. Find more details on what's happened here...

Following Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to rebrand HBO Max as "Max," we've seen a lot of content pulled from the streaming platform. Unfortunately, a number of beloved animated TV shows have also been removed without explanation over the past month.

As we first reported on Toonado.com, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim titles such as Metalocalypse, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Flapjack, Foster's Home, Dexter's Laboratory, and three Ben 10 shows are all now missing from the streamer, presumably so they can be licensed to other platforms.

However, it's now been revealed that Hanna-Barbera's Super Friends, a cartoon based on DC Comics' Justice League, is the latest show to be culled from Max.

The likes of Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited are currently available to stream, but if you've been planning to binge through them, now might be a good time to do so as animation appears to be a low priority for Max.

Super Friends ran from 1973 to 1985 on ABC as part of its Saturday-morning cartoon lineup. As noted, it was produced by Hanna-Barbera and was based on the Justice League of America and associated comic book characters published by DC Comics.

The name of the program (and the Justice League members featured with the Super Friends) changed multiple times over the years.

There was a total of 93 episodes and two backdoor-pilot episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, with Batman and Robin appearing in "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" and "The Caped Crusader Caper." The characters have since been referenced in other animated projects and even received multiple live-action nods.

While Super Friends is no longer available to stream on Max (or any other subscription service), individual episodes can still be purchased on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.

With any luck, Super Friends will soon find a new home, though many streaming services are now removing content in an effort to save money. Disney+, for example, recently took down a number of movies and TV shows including Willow and even a handful of Marvel titles.

This Zaslav guy thinks he knows what he is doing. Without a question Warner Discovery stock prices will go up and maybe they'll reach some profitability. In the long therm, he'll be known as the guy that destroyed Warners biggest differentiation: its huge legacy catalog.

@MadThanos - Yeah Zaslav is even ruining the "TCM" channel so much so that Spielberg and a few other Directors are trying to intervene.

@Mugens - this is crazy... when you do the Studio Tour you get to witness how important Warner is. Crazy dude that thinks everything is Property Bros.

This is a show that's hard to find every episode, even through the murky waters. So one more time with bravado, [frick] ZASLAV

Saw it as Kid wasn’t that good same level as fantastic four and Spider-Man

@dragon316 - Which ones? The 1967 or 1978 Fantastic Four cartoons? The 1967 or 1981 Spider-Man cartoons?

I did notice a lot of DC stuff is on Netflix now, such as Justice League animated and Unlimited. Amazon seems to still have Super Friends for "free with Max trial on Prime".

Well they are moving stuff to other services already and will continue to do so. Could see them ship off anything that isn't part of the new DCU

@bkmeijer1 - they make more money off licensing the streaming rights for a timeframe than they do off subscriptions for the same timeframe. If they can boost revenue by offloading animation to other streamers they’re both making and saving money with each show.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 6/23/2023, 11:25 AM
@Deklipz - didn't know that. Thought it was a weird move as they lose a bit of their competitorsposition, but that actually makes a lot of sense
Deklipz
Deklipz - 6/23/2023, 11:59 AM
@bkmeijer1 - There’s more benefits as well if you dig deeper into it. Less storage/bandwidth usage/etc… they’re likely to lose a negligible amount of subs due to Super Friends or Metalocalypse leaving as I SERIOUSLY doubt anyone has Max solely for either of those two specific things.

@Deklipz - true. But a big show like Westworld leaving is something else, and they recently announced more will follow I think.

But yeah, there's probably a tons of benefits I can't even think of in this strategy.

If they keep canceling the shows like this that I watch I’m gonna have to cancel my subscription.

The library of trash that was merged w/ HBO to form Max is a heaping pile of garbage. A ton of reality shows that I for one, wouldn’t be interested in in a million years. As a previously paying customer of the DC streaming service I can attest to the fact that some of us, are willing to pay a premium to have access to all DC content in one place.

Breaking up DC’s vast library of content and selling it off or leasing it out, may seem like a good financial decision, but it’s pretty short sighted in my op.

Letting Amazon take the new Batman animated show will be seen as a huge blunder when it turns out to be amaze balls. How is DC to compete w/ Marvel when its content is scattered to the winds and in some cases not available anywhere? SMH

Money grubbing corporate executives thinking solely about the bottom line is how DC got into such a funk over the past few years to begin with. Unlike Marvel that seems to have legit comic book fans either running things or at the very least involved in the decision making process.

Unless this type of thinking stops soon, DC is doomed! Doomed i tell you, doomed!!!! Lol

Ok rant over

Happy Friday

@MuadDib - How WB is handled has been very upsetting for the past several years. Why wouldn’t they want to house all of their DC shows/movies in one spot? Your example of the Batman show being on Amazon is a great example.

Seems that their strategy is to leverage their owned media for licensing fees rather than new subscriptions. Not a bad business decision, but a profoundly shitty user experience.

Wow, I was a big Superfriends fan when I was a kid. And the Schoolhouse Rock things on commercial breaks:)

Much of SF was obviously pretty silly. But "Challenge of the Superfriends" was my jam! Finally a real Justice League show that was pretty serious for the time. They even called themselves "the Justice League of America", fighting the Legion of Doom. Best supers show until the Diniverse and the Justice League show!

the service is a joke. what do you want? they should have every single piece of dc media there to watch. and be the only place to find it.
