BOX OFFICE: KICK-ASS 2 May Reach Only #3 At The North American Box Office This Weekend

Oprah Winfrey may have made all the difference at the North American box office this weekend as The Butler looks set to way overperform after taking the #1 spot yesterday. That means Kick-Ass 2 could drop as low as third place this weekend thanks to the success of We're the Millers. Read on for details!

Analysts have been predicting a close race between The Butler and Kick-Ass 2 all week, but in a surprise twist, the R-Rated adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book series may finish its opening weekend in third place. With an estimated $24 million three day total and an 'A' CinemaScore, The Butler earned $8.3 million yesterday, whereas Kick-Ass 2 took only $5.8 million for a $15+ million weekend. That could ultimately mean that it finishes in third place as We're the Millers looks set to have another solid weekend despite taking a mauling from critics. With a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers, Kick-Ass 2 has also not been met particularly well from those in the industry with a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 28%. Either way, this is not a good start for the sequel and could put the chances of the third instalment being adapted in jeopardy. However, like the first movie, good international numbers and DVD sales could make all the difference.

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

STARRING:

Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kick-Ass
Chloë Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl
Christopher Mintz-Plasse as The Mother F*cker
Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars
Donald Faison as Doctor Gravity
Lindy Booth as Night Bitch
Andy Nyman as The Tumor
Robert Emms as Insect Man
John Leguizamo as Javier
Morris Chestnut as Sergeant Marcus Williams

Why people keep saying Man of Steel underperformed, why because it didn't made 1 billion?the movie made a lot of money for WB it was a succes for them, besides US market i isn't anymore that important for movies studios these days, world wide market matters for them

Matthew Vaughn was the reason Kick Ass was good. He can't just be replaced.
Bryan Singer will soon find that out as well.

The Butler has Oprah in it. She has how many millions of women that watch her religiously? On top of that, many of them are family women, meaning they probably drug their whole family to the theater to see The Butler. Not surprising when you put it in perspective.

Also, if this film can make $15mil domestically in its opening weekend, that's just fine. Production budget was only $28mil. Marketing for the film might have brought total cost to $50mil. Chances are that the film will make $100mil worldwide within 5 weeks, which means it will have broken even before they ever release it on DVD/Blu-Ray.

So Kick-Ass had Nic Cage in it = Great film

Kick-Ass 2 doesn't have Nic Cage in it = Shit film

Something seems odd about this.

MOS didn't underperform. It's made more than Batman Begins and every Marvel Phase 1 movie, save Avengers.

I said it from day one: nobody asked for a Kick-Ass sequel.

Just watching this movie, I was a little embarrassed for it. It was like watching the San Diego Comic-con devolve into a street brawl.

Mark Millar, GTFO, and take your shitty little franchise with you.

I bet Fox will now think twice about letting Wadlow direct X-Force.
BlindJustice

Is the writer of this article trying to say the same audience who is going to see 'The Butler' would be going to see 'Kick-Ass' if the two weren't competing?

I doubt that's the case here...at least for the majority.

MOS didn't underperform, its box office was overhyped before it was released.I hope people don't exaggerate TDW box office numbers before it's released.
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 8/17/2013, 10:41 AM
I liked kick ass 2, I thought it was good for what it was(best scene was hit girl van rescue ). It's not as nearly better than the 1st one but it a movie that is still very entertaining, also I think the director will do good with the X-force movie.

Jim Carrey is not in the movie that much, Mother Russia is badass, the humor wasn't all that(poop/throw up joke), and the 3 main cast did good for what I feel was a unneeded sequel
BlindJustice
BlindJustice - 8/17/2013, 10:41 AM
@DonJonMags - The spark for me in the first one was seeing Hit-Girl beat the crap out of guys 5 times her size. Now everyone is expecting it and as you said seeing Jim Carrey was the highlight this time around.

As for FOX thinking twice about something...Well, it is FOX we're talking about.

Box Office standards are so funny. Here is the problem. Marvel has kicked too much ass. With Avengers and IM3 doing SOOOOOOO much coin that now the line is set so high for 'success' that its not really reachable all the time. 5 years ago people would have raved about Wolverine or MoS financial success, now in comparison to MCU films (Avengers and IM3) they look pale, at last in the accounting book...
