Despite being a self-professed fan of Marvel Studios' superhero flicks, legendary filmmaker James Cameron seems to feel that they've outstayed their welcome.

During a recent interview, the Avatar director said he hopes to see "Avengers fatigue" set in at some point, seemingly in the belief that if audiences grow tired of the formula, it'll make way for other types of stories to nab some of the spotlight.

Not too surprisingly, a lot of fans had a thing or two to say about this, but what about the man most directly responsible for shaping the MCU in the first place?

Sitting down with NY Mag following an Avengers: Infinity War in LA, Kevin Feige was told about Cameron's comments, and responded in the best way possible. Here's the except in full:

“‘There are other stories to tell,’” I said, quoting Cameron, “besides, you know, hypogonadal males…’”

“Hypogonadal!” said Feige.

I continued: “‘Hypogonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process.’

” Feige sat, processing the quote. I noted that Cameron prefaced his comments by saying, “[It’s] not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on, guys.”

“Uh, he loves the movies!” Feige said, a knowing grin spreading on his face. He stood up, pumping his arm. “That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!”

Though most seem to feel that Cameron is just blowing hot air because Marvel has taken his spot as "King of The World", Feige chooses to see the silver lining here - though there's a decent chance he did keep some thoughts on the matter to himself!

@Ronan3Accuser - man, I want they can make Avatar sequels more now. Just to se them failing at the BO and putting Cameron in his place.

The man basically described the Terminator films there.

This dude is always professional, I have nothing but respect for him. You never seen him crack under pressure. He must took a lot of shit when he started out in the business. And seen a lot of people mess up they’re careers, from not knowing how to handle certain situations. The MCU is his baby and he’s not [frick]ing that up for no one. He’s probably being thinking about a cinematic universe since he was a kid...he probably has one for DC characters too!!!

@superbigguy32 - Kevin Feige and the MCU is what happens when you're motivated by passion instead of money.

@Chaos200 - Exactly! That’s why he made the Spiderman deal with Sony. You think any other studio would do something ballsy like that?! NOPE!!! Because most executives only see $dollar signs$. Feige saw the bigger picture, and knew if he has the fans trust, the money will come...

So like transformers and Battleship? (Still love you Rihanna)

@XelCorp - James Cameron is just bitter and egotistical at this point. Stranger Things, Ready Player One, It, Jurassic World, Altered Carbon, Get Out, and plenty others have done remarkably well in the age of Marvel Studios. Critics and fans loved those properties.

These old timers need to stop blaming other studios for their shortcomings. Avatar was generic as hell in my opinion.

Coming from the guy who wants to make five Avatar movies and said this about Termintaor Genisys: "I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance."

ALIENS and T2 are some of my favorite films of all time, but that's enough out of you.
