Nicolas Cage is set to debut his Bela Lugosi-inspired take on Dracula in Renfield this weekend, but this upcoming horror flick features a more animalistic interpretation of the legendary vampire.

Universal has released the first trailer and poster for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is based entirely on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, "The Captain's Log."

The movie will focus on the Count's journey by sea from Transylvania to London, and the crew of the Demeter's efforts to stop him before he reaches dry land.

If you've read the classic novel, you'll be all too aware that they aren't exactly successful!

"Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew."

The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

The cast also includes Jon Briones (Ratched, American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films, Better Call Saul), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things, Bruised) and Javier Botet (It films, Mama).

From DreamWorks Pictures and the producers of Zodiac and Black Swan, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is directed by Norwegian horror virtuoso André Øvredal (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, Trollhunter), from a script by Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train).

I'm pretty stoked for this. Looks like Dracula/ Vampire stories (as monsters) are starting to make a come back, and I'm pretty stoked about that tbh.

@Demigods - Heck yeah! This looks like a good time at the movies too! I felt like they could have kept Drac a little more obscured in the trailer to retain a sense of mysteriousness, but it looks good nonetheless. The kid is the only thing keeping my expectations down. You know he will survive and save the day somehow...

@Shivermetimbers - lol I hope not. The book is pretty clear that no one makes it off that ship.

@Demigods - exactly what I was going to say. Everyone's dead on the ship.

@Demigods - Oh I know, thats why the kid worries me. Movies never kill kids.

@Shivermetimbers - Yeah you're usually right, but horrors can be a different story. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dracula fed a baby to his brides lol. And It chapter 1 and 2.

For the most part, you're absolutely right though, and movie logic means the kid will probably survive. I hope not though lol

Is this part of Universal’s Classic Monster series? Along with The Invisible Man (2020) and Renfield?

@massdeath - It's being produced by Dreamworks so maybe.

@massdeath - it’s an adaptation of one of the characters, but it’s seemingly more based on the book. Although, there was the scene briefly depicting this in the original Dracula as well.

@massdeath - They're just gonna keep throwing money at this until they can get that "Dark Universe" off the ground. Invisible man was pretty good, IMO, but if this movie ends with the scary bat turning into Nic Cage, I swear to god . . .

This really is the start of the Vampire Renaissance, huh? Always up for more vamp stories and the sheer amount coming out in the next few years is just awesome.

While I love the different takes on the Universal Monsters, my biggest hope is for a big budget, massive scale, filmed in black and white cross-over featuring Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Bride, The Wolfman, Invisible Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon called "Universal Monster Mania".

@FilmGuy7878 - i remember back in the day, i would be reading the tv guide, and see a cross over/team-up monster coming on during the weekend and would be so excited...so hell yeah on the monster cross overs...i will say, i hate it when they have a dog in a movie, and it gets killed...worse than when a kid gets it...probably cuz neither kids nor animals have any say in life...and it's the adult humans that cause the chaos
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 4/13/2023, 4:52 PM
@soupysales - Yeah I'm not too fond of dogs dying in movies.

I remember I came up a plot for a monster team up that goes a little something like this...

Frankenstein's Monster (now known as Victor after his "father") and his Bride (now named Elsa Shelly) are living in a suburban neighborhood, trying to live out their life as a married couple in peace until Aliana Van Helsing (the great granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing) calls upon their perspective and help when she learns that Dracula has risen from the dead and is building a supposed "Dark Legion" to take over the world (The Dark Legion involves Count Dracula, Lawrence Talbot aka The Wolfman (Talbot being forced against his will to stay in Wolfman form) and Jack Griffin aka The Invisible Man (just joined for shits and giggles)).
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 4/13/2023, 5:43 PM
@FilmGuy7878 - They need at least three of these films to be a hit before they can do that. So far, they've only gotten three into the theaters in nearly a decade, and only Invisible Man came close.
