Are DC and Marvel's Universes too big?

Having a wealth of characters is what makes the two companies great, but is it also a hinderance?

DC and Marvel’s wealth of characters is part of what makes the companies so great.  As an avid Deadpool fan, I really enjoy seeing him interact with (and often outsmart) other characters who are near polar opposites to him.  However, I feel that in a holistic sense, both companies are over saturated with characters, which leads to a select few receiving an appropriate amount of attention (the money makers like Batman, Spiderman, Superman etc.) and many being left out.  I am not all suggesting that either companies should just start killing off characters, but I think it could be wise for the companies to create branches within their organization with their own separate writing, editing, illustrating and creative teams.  For example, maybe DC could reopen Milestone with its original characters plus some of DC’s characters who have great stories, but were over shadowed.  For Marvel, maybe they could reopen a Max branch for characters that work well within teams and are fan favorites, but have struggled when put in main roles due to poor writing or lack of advertisement.  I don’t think it’s necessary to make the separations based solely on content or popularity, but I think it would be refreshing to see great characters not always have to play backseat to the usual suspects.

Yeah I would love to see the Milestone line back, also Wildstorm back in their own Universe and not in the New 52.

it can never be "To large" they can choose to use and not to use characters. 90% of characters wouldn't make it on their own without a universe.

Yeah man, me too, btw I loved them MAX series, needs to come back!

Also while I'm talking about missing things :p

..... miss them damn Marvel VS DC crossover comics, one-offs! All them Independent ones too, just hardly any these days, though Dynamite Entertainment and IDW keeping it going , which is great.

prob wont happen, not with Disney controlling all continuity and throwing out all the old stories and books.

it will probably be straight up prequels to movies and mini series.

those crossovers were cool. Not so much the DC/Marvel but the DC or Marvel with others like Dark Horse, Chaos, Top Cow, and Image.

Too big? No. Too scared of change? Yes. Sometime in the late '80s, birth companies decided to quit evolving. Everyone's age froze, time stood still, and although characters die and change they always return to the status quo. The whole thing feels hollow and unrealistic now. Give me Gwen Stacy, Jean Grey and Jason Todd dying and REAL evolving story lines any day over this constant "event" crap we get now.

No. Make it bigger, no limits to the creativity.

Less or more characters won't make any difference to the amount of batman books published per week.
