James Cameron thinks he's GOD!

James Cameron thinks he's GOD!

Cameron has made some rather negative comments about Piranha 3D and other genre films, saying those movies are “exactly what we should not be doing in 3D.”

A short while ago, it was reported that James Cameron thought his ex-wife's Oscar-winning movie The Hurt Locker would have been better in 3D. More recently, Cameron has been slagging off Piranha 3D along with other films in an interview with Vanity Fair.

Well, needless to say, Cameron's seemingly callous statements about other people's films haven't gone unnoticed. Piranha 3D producer Mark Canton has fired back at the Avatar director in an open letter with some choice words of his own, including statements like:

“It is amazing that in the movie-making process – which is certainly a team sport – that Cameron consistently celebrates himself out as though he is a team of one.”

“ Let’s just keep this in mind Jim…you did not invent 3D.”

“Young directors should be inspired by you, not publicly castigated by your mean-spirited and flawed analysis.”

"The simple truth is that I had nothing but good things to say about AVATAR and my own experience since I actually saw it and didn’t damn someone else’s talent publicly in order to disassociate myself from my origins in the business from which we are all very fortunate. To be honest, I found the 3D in AVATAR to be inconsistent and while ground breaking in many respects, sometimes I thought it overwhelmed the storytelling."

Now I agree that it is true some 3D conversions simple do not work and in some cases ruin the experience (Clash of the Titans), but what right does Cameron have to criticise other peoples work??? Is this a case of one man becoming to big for his own boots?

Avatar was great but had it not been in the ground breaking format that it was would it have become the highest grossing film ever? I think not. The script, the action nor the direction broke any new ground, the technology did, and the technology is available to any one who has a spare billion dollars or so....as James has.

To read the letter in full hit the link and let me know if you think old Jimbob needs a smack in the face with some reality.

I hate his smugness, But i would be the same way if I made the two highest grossing movies of all time and some other great ones(not including avatar as I haven't seen it). Also Cameron got fired from the sequel to the original Piranha and is just bitter when its mentioned, He probably had some personal vendetta with this movie sense day one. I respect the director of Piranha for back firing, Though i don't think he was being as mean as he wanted to be.

I don't see anywhere in the article that James Cameron says he's God. This just reeks of bored sensationalism.

The reason James Cameron started making movies was because he felt he could do it better. Not necessarily out of awe and inspiration of directors before him. So is it any real surprise he's blunt and disrespectful with his opinions on other people's work?

Really, who [frick]ing cares what James Cameron says about a film targeted to a niche crowd? The fans shouldn't give a shit if the movie they see delivers in the way they want it to. Does Cameron's arrogance cause you not to enjoy a small budget 3D film? It [frick]in' shouldn't.

Someone needs a big dose of "get over it."

James Cameron started film making after being "so moved" by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was in awe and took loads of inspiration from that film and from Kubick. It should be "a surprise" when any one is disrespectful to other peoples work, there is no need for it. He came up with the idea that Hurt Locker could have been better in 3D! The film that took his oscar away from him, which he thought was in the bag. The fans wont stay away from their movie cos he says something stupid but they do have a right to reply.

Seriously, this is an article to spur on your own hateparade because James Cameron hurt your feelings by shitting on something you like. Or you simply don't like the guy and attached your wagon to this childish drama war someone is so desperately trying to stir up. It's weak and it's obvious.

I've heard, with my own ears, James Cameron say he would watch films and think to himself that he could do it better. The inescapable fact is that, yes, James is an arrogant cock. That's been firmly established.
However, you would have to be living in a little bubble to be truly surprised that someone who has a high opinion of themselves would not consider the feelings of the person he/she is critiquing beforehand. Why would you? They're arrogant cocks. So, no, it shouldn't be surprising.

Lastly, you should change the title of this article to "I think that James Cameron thinks he is God". Nowhere did I see James Cameron be quoted as saying that he's God anywhere within the article. You want to trash Cameron? By all means, do so, but don't be so misleading about it.

@WeaponX

Hmmmmm, maybe I should have put this in as an editorial then, because it is MY belief that James Cameron thinks himself as some sort of film god.

I don't have a "hateparade" against him, I have enjoyed some of his movies. I haven't and probably wont see Piranha 3D and so that has nothing to do with it. This weak & obvious "drama war" was merely a topic of discussion, if you don't want to discuss don't.

The fact people put up with arrogant cocks not considering peoples feelings is the reason the world is in such a state today my friend. Shame more us don't take a stand and call a prick a prick.

Imagine if at the oscars Barbra Streisand had said "James, you don't get this cos your an arrogant cock". That would have shut him up.

As for my title, God is used as a metaphor so cannot be misleading as there is no such thing as God so James Cameron can't really be one.

"but what right does Cameron have to criticise other peoples work???"
He has an opinion and is expressing it, he has that right just as everyone has it.
The question is what right do critics have to.... criticize other people's work, especially since they're not even in that line of work.

Sorry guys, I kinda' agree with him. I can understand if 3D would ENHANCE the movie experience and were appropriate for the film then by all means do it, but that's if it's a GREAT film to begin with (SOLID compelling story, great acting, good pace and timing, etc.). For example, I would TOTALLY see 'Hurt Locker' in 3D! Films that use 3D as a 'gimick' (such as 'Piranha 3D') aren't worth the time and effeort and use the effect as a lure to get movie-goers into the theater to see a film them more than likely would have avoided had it not been in 3D. In effect, the movie cheapens the 3D experience.

"I've heard, with my own ears, James Cameron say he would watch films and think to himself that he could do it better. The inescapable fact is that, yes, James is an arrogant cock. That's been firmly established."

WeaponX - Haven't we ALL sat in a theater at ONE point and said 'I could do better than that'? Go to either the 'EDITORIALS' or 'FANFIC' sections on this site and look at all of the aspiring casting directors, script writers, directors and producers posting their takes on 'how they'd do it differently' for us to see. Just because Mr. Cameron actually said he thought he could do a better job in an interview doesn't necessarily make him a 'cock', it just shows that he's honest (smoetimes brutally).

"However, you would have to be living in a little bubble to be truly surprised that someone who has a high opinion of themselves would not consider the feelings of the person he/she is critiquing beforehand."

Have you ever READ the comments section of a article posted on this site? Consideration of feelings in a critique is not often observed. We all hide behind our avatars safe in the knowledge that we'll probably never meet the person who's work we're commenting on (or thoroughly trashing). So he does what we all do, yet because he's 'famous' that makes him an arrogant prick? I beg to differ - again, it's human nature and he's just being brutally honest.

To me the best director ever was Stanley Kubrick!(Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut), The Pure perfectionist!

Francis Ford Coppola (Rumble Fish, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather) and Terence Malick (The Thin Red Line) comes next! And finally as the third is Spielberg
(Schindler´s List, Jaws and Indiana Jones)!

Jaws is probably my No.1 off all time. Spielberg seems to gone off the boil lately but back in the day he was the man!

[frick] Cameron ignorant prick. I think the sequel to Avatar will be based off of the Fox and the Hound this time. [frick]head.

@alexdelarge666 - definitely Kubrick so many classic movies man.

loganoneil - 9/2/2010, 7:45 AM
AlexDeLarge666 - Agreed, Kubrick is the MAN, but what about David Lean ('Lawrence of Arabia', 'Doctor Zhivago' & 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', to name a few)? Or how about John Ford ('The Quite Man', 'The Grapes of Wrath' & 'Mister Roberts', to name a few)? Or, if you want to go 'new-school', what about Ridley Scott ('Alien', 'Bladerunner' & 'Gladiator', to name a few)? Let's not be stingy with the props!

What has he done since Titanic? It was good, and was the biggest box office of all time. What's next? Avatar. It was mediocre and topped Titanic only to be forgotten in a few months. Now who gives a shit? James Cameron. There are several better directors than this greedy prick still making great movies undermined by the media.

@MarvelousMarty - If Barbra Streisand had actually did say that to him, I'd laugh pretty good and that would be the only piece of recorded material in my house of Streisand I'd actually keep.

@loganoneil - You take the time to copy and paste my comments and then run off track by implying things I've not said. Where did I say Cameron is a cock because he said he could do it better? Nowhere, that's where. You've missed the point, dude. You've somehow read my words and then ran off on your own.

WeaponX - I don't want to fight and apologize if I misunderstood you, but the following QUOTE from you was what led me to believe you think Cameron's a cock:

"I've heard, with my own ears, James Cameron say he would watch films and think to himself that he could do it better. The inescapable fact is that, yes, James is an arrogant cock. That's been firmly established."

How else is one SUPPOSED to interpret that? Please elaborate (I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I really want to understand exactly what you mean when you say something like that).
