Kick-Ass versus Iron Man

Kick-Ass versus Iron Man

The year of the comic-book movie is well behind us and 2010 is going to be a slack year. So the fight comes down to Kick-Ass versus Iron Man, with Jonah Hex wandering around out back like a great Clint Eastwood film.

With Kick-Ass already out and the second movie in the Iron Man franchise not long away the question stands ready to be answered; who’s going to be more popular.

There are a few indicators that we can take into a discussion like this. One need only look at the success of the first Iron Man movie and compare it to movies like Wanted and we’ll get an idea of who is going to be coming out first in the box office. Iron Man, despite a total lack of Angelina Jolie, managed to rack up almost 2 and a half times the box office income then Wanted did.

In fact, if you add up the domestic gross intakes of independent comic book movies Constantine, Hellboy II and Wanted you still don’t get to the $318 million that Iron Man took in.

You can keep looking and take a look at the cast. The best that Kick-Ass can do for a big name actor is Nicholas Cage, and despite my own love for him I realize he’s not the draw that others are.

On the flipside of that you have a movie that is headed by Robert Downey Jr., who is at his peak as an actor right now, backed up by Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltro, and joined by Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle. Now that’s how to get people to go to a movie.

So here’s the question. Do you really expect me to believe a story that many have heralded as brilliant will draw a successfully large enough crowd to compete with Iron Man? Will a movie filled to the brim with small children beating the bloody pulp out of one another actually be a draw?

I suggest not. There’s no way that Kick-Ass will come close to Iron Man 2 at the box office, and we can only hope as comic book fans who are hoping other better independent comic books will be made into films that Kick-Ass gets within spitting distance of $100 grand worth at the US box office.

How can you put these two movies in the same sentence? One is a rental and the other is a THEATER MOVIE!

The difference there is, Wanted sucked. Kick-Ass is great and has been getting positive reviews across the board, aside from that tool Ebert. But yeah, it will have a long way to go to even keep up with Iron Man 2 I think because its coming off the back of the first movie and it obviously has a much wider audience and is 12s or whatever. But as for which will be the better movie, well remains to be seen doesn't it!

I'm struggling to see the point of this article as I think it's pretty obvious that a movie like Iron Man 2 that already has an established fan base (as it's a sequel) that will be marketed to a larger audience (as it's a 12 rather than an 18) will obviously be more successful than Kick-Ass regardless of which is better!

We'll of course Kick-Ass won't make as much money as Iron Man 2, with Im2 being a sequel to a successfull movie based on a popular comic book character that has been recognized by fans for almost forty years. The marketing and already established public appeal, along with a line of well known and successful actors, will guarantee Im2 a clear advantage over Kick Ass.

But who knows about critical acclaim. If done poorly, Im2 could be reviled by critics, while Kick Ass already has many good reviews. We'll just have to wait and see.

What about Red coming out in October, I am sure that will not even Touch Iron man but still it could be good!! Green Hornet may not suck like speculated either we will see!!!!!!!!

Ha, I think its fine to make fun of a lousy critic, jawless or not! He's always been a useless movie reviewer because he doesn't take everything into account and will allow one thing to taint his entire perception of a film. So we end up with 4 star reviews for stuff like Australia because he liked the scenery and 1 star reviews for Kick-Ass because he felt Hit Girl was "morally abhorrent"..not a comment on the acting, direction or anything else..ONE STAR! Thats not a critic its a reactionary asshole.

@ Keven Kick Ass will be Number 1 this weekend your crazy if you think Death at a funeral will beat it out. This movie has plenty of hype with it as well not as much as Iron Man 2 but its got more than Death at a funeral for sure.

Mostly what gtrman said.

Although I will say this, if we're talking quality rather than Box Office (the latter being just silly). We already know Kick-Ass is fantastic. I know it anyway, having seen it three times already. Iron Man MAY suck, for all we know at this point. I don't think it will - I have very high hopes, but at THIS point in time, Iron Man 2's the movie with more to prove.

Kick-Ass was incredible, but Iron Man 2 will be superior no matter what, in acting, story and box office

kick ass doesnt have a shot at winning this. quality aside, its rated R. Iron Man has a much larger demographic that it appeals to, and Kick Ass is geared towards a very specific group.

@Joshua S. Hill

I NEVER hate on someone for writing an article...i figure if they put the time into it (because it does take time) and it's not my cup-o-tea, i just won't comment.

This article, however, is utterly pointless. There is no DEBATE here because everyone knows Kick-Ass has NO CHANCE of beating Iron Man 2!

I really don't get what you were thinking on this one...

These two movies are kind of like apples & oranges. Other than superhero genre, they are two totally different movies.

Independent, Rated R, viral and word of mouth marketing, one known actor in supporting role
VS
Big Studio, friendly pg-13, huge mktg. campain, chock full of big stars.

Like gtrman said, the box office vs cost will be an interesting thing to see.
