Marvel's INFINITY Plot Device for Marvel's Phase 3 - A Look Back/Catch up

We know something big is coming for Marvel's Phase 3, but just how big? Being teased with Thanos and the Infinity Gems, we take a look into just how massive of a plot device, this is actually going to be!

Let's get straight into this shall we?

When Marvel Phase One started we didn't really know what to expect apart from that we were getting an Avenger's Assemble Movie.
But along the way, in THOR we saw something teased...

With the Infinity Gauntlet being shown in THOR everyone went crazy, well why would they you may ask? Because of this guy... or alien if you prefer...

This is Thanos, he is a Titan, also referred to as "The Mad Titan" And no wonder why, he is one of THE most powerful villains to ever come across, well, the Universe aswell as the Avengers.

So anyway back on track, we were teased with the Gauntlet but with no confirmed questions as to why it was their.

So the came the Captain America where we were introduced to the Tesseract, then it appeared in The Avenger's where it shows to hold unlimited power.

It was then confirmed later on that it is an Infinity Gem by Volstagg at the end credit scene in Thor: The Dark World where him and Sif are taking the Aether to the Collector to lock away and keep safe because "It is too dangerous to keep two Infinity Stones so close together" as Volstagg explains.

So with that being said we now move into the "Aether"

A substance powerful enough that if used correctly has the power to effectively "Blackout" the universe turning everything into dark matter. When it's not being used to kill everything it gives the user power, and lots of it, it has the ability for the user to be able to defend itself, and allows you strength, lots of it.

So, here we have two Infinity Stones confirmed by the end of the movie. But which are they?

Well, it's no question in my mind that the Aether is definitely the Power Gem, it just screams that to me, and of course their is the Tesseract, this could either be the Mind Gem or the Space Gem, Mind is possible because Loki's staff/spear (Which is powered by the Tesseract) has the power to change people and make them his "Slaves" He uses it to control their minds, but, however we see it has the ability to teleport people in space, so that is unconfirmed, yet.

So what about now? Well, at the end credit scene of The Avenger's, we saw Thanos standing up from his throne and turning to the camera, grinning.

Now, what is interesting is that the Chitauri Leader says to Thanos "To challenge them is to court Death" Now here is two definitions of what "Court" means
1.Be involved with (someone) romantically, with the intention of marrying.
2.Pay special attention to (someone) in an attempt to win their support or favor

Now Death is a woman.

Well supernatural being if you like, who of which Thanos is in love with, I won't go into the details but in the Graphic Novel "The Infinity Gauntlet" Thanos spends the entire Novel trying to prove his love to her. She is closely linked to the Infinity story.

Now, here we look to the future, we recently just got the Trailer to Guardians of the Galaxy, and see this Orb:

Now with the films story description it states that this Orb has the power to literally destroy the universe, so that got me thinking that this could be the Reality Gem, it would make sense right? But we won't know until it's mentioned by the collector or someone else. As we know the collector is on the hunt for the gems because when he get the Aether from Volstagg he states "One down, five to go" He could be working for Thanos or being forced to as to give away Thanos' identity so he doesn't alert the Avengers until the Proper time.

So now we have three more gems to be mentioned, but I don't think we'll see anymore of them until Age of Ultron where one may get mentioned and in Phase Three which will build up to Thanos wielding The Infinity Gauntlet.

So this is the end of this huge Editorial, I hope you people liked it as this is my first Article posted and I'm only 15.

What is next for the Mad Titan and the Gems?

We can only wait for more films of Phase 2 and 3 to be released

Thanks so much man :)
@MrReese
That is possible, I really want Dr strange to be cast in a solo film or have a side role in another superhero film :)

Thanks for the comments :)

I'm telling you, Avenegers 3 won't be The Infinity Gauntlet. The gems will keep being introduced throughout the next phase and in phase 4 we see Thanos collect them. I think that these will be the gems

Tesseract - already confirmed to be the space stone
Aether - reality gem that grants Malekith's wish to turn backt he universe
Orb - time gem
Terrigen (not sure if it will be called mist) - power gem explaning Inhumans
Artifact in possession of Hella in Thor 3 - soul Gem
Don't know about mind gem but it could be Loki's staff though that's not likely.

@Alphadog
That's interesting, I like the idea of having the Inhumans involved aswell
But marvel hasn't confirmed Phase 4, I doubt they will even attemot it because by the end of phase 3 they will be pushing it which is not good for business, I honestly think that if they did Phase 4, depending who it is, could just be beating a dead horse by now
I see where you're coming from though :)

Alphadog: I have to disagree. Thanos is pretty much guaranteed villain of Avenger 3 and with Thanos naturally comes the Infinity Gauntlet. But, I don't think he'll get the last gem or two until Avengers 3.

Alphadog - 2/20/2014, 2:26 PM
Pay atention to what is going on around you all of you. Kevin Feige said that Thanos would be the big bad of the series and the last villain that the Avengers would face. Planning up to 2021 means that they have plans for a fourth phase. Also, Avengers is Marvel's biggest money maker and Disney won't allow them to end the series after only three movies.
FraserB

Alphadog:
You have to consider all the movie in between the Avengers. And if 2021 is correct it will be just the one movie without all the other movies, that I could get down with but a full phase with five more movies or so? No it'd be too much by then, with movie series there is such thing as too much, I hope they either stop at Phase 3 and if they have to because Avenger's 3 villain is someone completely different, do Thanos as a separate film and not a full Phase because the first three are leading up to this.

I had a really stupid theory:

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are somehow Infinity Stones. Scarlet Witch power is probability manipulation so probably Reality gem and Quicksilver can run fast so basically control time so maybe Time Gem. Really, really stupid but I just wanted to share.

Good job Fraser! Thumbs up!!

Infinity will happen in Avengers 3 as Marvel will want RDJ in the epic climax of what they have been building... and as we all know, currently Avengers 3 is the last film of his contract.

I think they will wait a phase or two before bringing a recast Ironman back.

@TheDarkPhoenix

Thanks man! Haha I chuckled at your theory (Not in a bad way) but I understand what you mean, with scarlet witch I could understand with manipulation, quicksilver? Imagine if he stopped time, ran 500m and then started it again, everyone would be like "Dude, why's he out of breath?" Haha Thanks for the thumbs up :)

Great article. The thing with Marvels plan is ... This universe is here to stay. It dosent end with The Infinity Gauntlet. They are going to keep going. Look at it like event comics. The same way everything tied into Avengers is the way it will keep going. Infinity is the perfect tie I story but from there, after this concludes they can go with say Civil War or a World War Hulk for the earth bound story's and an Annihilation Wave story or a War of Kings story for the cosmic. My point is with the diversity of the universe they have no limit of storys. With the money they won't stop. The movies are another way for them to tell their storys and at some point they will start telling completely original storys. The movie universe is here to stay.

@Fraser Lol I know! I just had that theory when Whedon said that the twins will be in AoU and I was speculating. I'm still waiting to see how their powers will be explained since they can't be mutants! Also, I'm a girl :P

Noobster
Noobster - 2/20/2014, 4:17 PM
great article!! and here is a little theory on how they can use infinity gems in AoU. Well to start it is called AGE of Ultron, and I've heard from that Roger Wardell guy on twitter that ultron will have the time gem but besides that it would make sense, Guardians would have the reality and then that would just leave the soul and the mind. Since it looks like doctor strange is gonna be in phase 3 they can have him get his powers from either the mind or soul since they both could work. Personally i think it should be the mind so when in avengers 3 Thanos can get the soul gem and give them the shapeshifting ability they have in the comics. Then for a phase 4 they can have west coast and secret avengers and inhumans and a planet hulk, with a final film, world war hulk, maybe they can say that they sent all the hulks off the planet (she, red, so on) cause personally i dont think our Cinematic hulk is as powerful as the comics. any ways theres that

I honestly think people are getting WAY too excited about Thanos. Unless they can find an actor who can be just like Jack Nicholson in mind and body, then we're really just getting an Anakin Skywalker story, and to me, he might as well be Hayden Christensen.

I think Steven Moffat needs to write the script, the story needs to be extremely non-linear in that we see heroes displaced throughout time and other planets, and not some charge of the Rohirrim on the Pelennor fields where Thanos just obliterates them all.

And you know who ELSE puts the gauntlet on? Nebula. In the same story.

Phase 1 was all about introducing a universe that spans many different franchises and characters, and also introduced us to the Tesseract, a macguffin that has consequences within more than one film.

Phase 2 introduces the idea of infinity stones, and subsequently reveals that the Tesseract is one of them. It then gives us two more, the Aether and the GOTG Orb.

With the groundwork all laid out, Phase 3 will go full throttle and give us the remaining 3 infinity stones. One in Doctor Strange and one in Thor 3 or GOTG2 (if there is a GOTG sequel in this phase). My guess is the final stone will be introduced at the beginning of Avengers 3.

Marvel won't drag this out past Phase 3. They've been teasing for the past few years that Phase 3 would be the culmination of what was set up throughout Phases 1 and 2.

When a character can hit the reset button, it cheapens everything. See "Into Darkness".

I have a feeling Yondu is involved with the time gem/orb. He goes back in time to the 80's and takes Quill up to space with him. Yondu trains him to be Star-Lord and tells about the Guardians in his era. The orb gets confiscated somehow, and Quill tries to get it back for him. He's caught (as seen in the trailer) and meets the rest of the team in prison. The rest of the movie is the Guardians trying to get the orb back, each for their own purposes.
Orphix
Orphix - 2/21/2014, 3:54 AM
I think the orb in GotG is possibly the time Gem. Quill is after it so he can go back to 80's earth and see his mum again.

However I can never really get too excited about the whole infinity gautlet story. The IG will just be used as a Macguffin of the film and not really mean that much.
CharlesLord
CharlesLord - 2/21/2014, 7:54 AM
@Alexander so theyre going to kill a character thats been signed on for multiple movies?

And the Tesseract was never confirmed to be the space gem, its just assumed because one of its main powers is the ability to transport into space. Loki's staff is powered by the Tesseract, if it was an infinity stone itself Feige would have confirmed it when he said the Tesseract was one. I think the Orb is obviously a stone, prolly Time since it seems like Quill loves the 80s so much that he'd wanna go back. If we're introduced to Warlock, we could get the Soul gem. Then we have Dr Strange to introduce the Eye of Agamotto which I think will be the macguffin stone of the movie. If we get Thor 3, that might intro another and then I agree that Av3 can intro the last one as Thanos searches or gains all of them to start the IG.
Alphadog
Alphadog - 2/21/2014, 11:13 AM
@CharlesLord What [frick] are you talking about? Kevin Feige himself said that it was the space stone in the interview where he confirmed it being a infinity stone.
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 2/21/2014, 11:15 AM
I think people REALLY want things to be certain devices that they are definitely not.

The Tesseract MIGHT be the space gem, considering it opens portals - yet in the First Avenger, it provides power. In the Thor stinger, Nick Fury describes it as "unlimited power".

The Aether COULD be the power gem, but it's really just this all-consuming force.

Loki's staff fits the bill for the soul gem, but we're going to disregard it...?

If they're all going to be shaped into gems that fit into the Infinity Gauntlet, whatever. I just don't support the Infinity Gauntlet storyline.
Alphadog
Alphadog - 2/21/2014, 12:10 PM
@Tainted87 They aren't all going to be shaped like gems because two of them aren't already though one of them might end up being. I'm pretty that the Aether is the reality gem and the Tesseract HAS BEEN confirmed as being the space gem so there's no might in that phrase.

Are there any links where Feige confirms what the stone the tesseract was?
