Fans need to stop judging fans

NOTE: This is my very first article. It will also be very short.


I was recently reading the editorial and fan-fiction section when I noticed a growing problem:

THE PROBLEM:On this site people keep on harshly critiquing other people's work. I am not talking about the people involved in comic book movies or comic books; I am talking about us fans insulting other fans work. Whenever I read an editorial or a fanfic that has not been made by a cbm power user(nailbiter11, JoshWilding, MarvelDCFreshman) there tends to be a lot insulting comments. I know that with these kinds of articles there tends to be spelling errors ,grammatical errors, format errors, or even the accidentally repeated idea. I just want to give a heads up to people that do not know this: A LOT OF USERS ON THIS SITE ARE KIDS. Comic Books and their movies are meant for kids and teenagers as well as adults but mainly for kids(I am not trying to make fun of adult comic book fans because I am a teenager and I know I will never stop loving comic books.) We happen to submit lots of articles as well. Since we have not finished school our writing skills are not perfect. People think they can stop this problem by insulting the creator but as stated above a lot of the "bad" articles are submitted by kids.

THE SOLUTION: Instead of writing insulting comments about the problems with the article, why not write suggestions and tips on how to fix these problems. You are the ones who noticed them in the first place. This may not sound like a lot but this really helps us amateur article writers. With these tips we would be able to correct our current articles and be able to write better ones in the future.

OVERVIEW: comicbookmovie.com is fansite where fans learn upcoming news about the new comics, comic book tv series's, and comicbookmovie. It is also place where fans can express their ideas and opinions about them as well. I am not trying to block people's opinions but just trying to say that instead of insults, suggestions would be better. So next time you comment on another fan's article, try to take my words into consideration because it would be a major help to us amateur article writers.

I'm among these "critics". I don't feel I'm being harsh when I comment on an article I feel is a quick shout-out to an idea, informing the author that organization is needed.

I read all the editorials here, believe it or not. Even the ones that most people will pass on because of grammatical issues, spelling, or simply a formatting discrepancy (great wall of text). When I feel others have verbalized my thoughts in the comments section, I refrain from commenting.

I apply that principle to articles. I don't expect newcomers to read through CBM's editorial archive to see if their idea has already been published, but some things are a bit obvious.

If you stop putting pressure on people to do the right thing here, as evidenced already, the editorial page will be reduced to fancasts, rehashed TASM Mystery Man speculation, and random undeveloped fan-fiction. Rules are there for a reason, and people should take pride in their work.

@jokerfan, for the poorly done articles I'm saying you should give suggestions to make a better article but I do agree I may have gone a little overboard

@jokerfan your correct but I think he just made a mistake by posting it in the editorial section because he acknowledged it was a fan-fic

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with being the guy to point out grammatical, spelling, or punctuation problems. Somebody has to. The real problem is an occasional total disregard for respect.

But everybody, even kids, maybe even especially kids need to learn to take criticisms. Even harsh ones. It's part of life.

Of course some people take it too far and there's never a place for name-calling, but honestly, people need to learn to have a thicker skin. In this day and age, with the internet an open forum for opinions, the younger generation needs to understand that just because you are entitled to your opinion and have the outlet to express it, does not mean you won't have to defend it-against some real jerks sometimes.

@Blite32; I agree with you. Blatantly being a bully is cruel and there should be no place for it in our little community here. But I really think that too many younger writers on this site take comments a little too personally, and as I said earlier; need to learn to have a bit thicker skin.

I admit though, growing up, if I wanted my opinion to be heard, I had to speak it face to face with a person or group of people. Trust me, that was a lot harder than having a couple text boxes tell me I was wrong.

There will always be critics, there will always be bullies. Ignore them or just be the bigger man.

@jpfola26; If you are referring to myself and jokerfanhahaha as "these guys" then you are proving my point. I most certainly did not insult Blite32, and after rereading Jokerfanhahaha's response I dont think he did either.

If you were referring to the bullies in general, I retract my statement, but if you were reffering directly to us than that is not fair.

If anything, Blite32 should be proud of an article that has created this conversation. He should be happy there are people who felt strongly enough to respond, even in disagreement.

Teenagers should be able to write compentently, and kids probably shouldn't be on this website without supervision. In fact, I think it would be absoulutly fantastic, if the parents took the time to help the kid write an article. Not very many kids write for fun. The time would be very constructively spent for both the child and parent.
In the end, I expect quality editorials from all contributers. If you're unable to write quality, then don't write. Speaking of which, when CBM contributers write an extremely bad editorial, the most common response to the backlash is the "drunk/hangover" excuse. I promise you. I am not joking.

Much needed article. Criticism is a bummer sometimes, but is very needed to improve and grow. If your going to write up an editorial or whatever here, you better expect some people aren't going to be nicey-nice in there comments. Thick skin is an absolute must here. I agree that constructive criticism is way better than attacking the writer just cause you can or you think they are just stupid. If someone is being an ahole, then ignore them. That's what will really piss them off. Golden123 has a point with the kids thing. As well as Jokerfan, I agree. Maybe the bully report needs to be used more often for some people to get the point. When people are miserable, they want to make others feel that way too.
