SEQUELS: 2nd Time's the Charm - 3rds are Turds

If Hollywood can get it right the first time around and sometimes even the second. Why, oh why, never the third?

I recently wrote an article on the subject of great films that would make great comics. De-evolution, if you will. While deep in research it began to dawn on me that there are some really great sequels out there. Some sequels are so good they surpass the original and become the film that defines the franchise. Some of these very same franchises go on to kill themselves with the third installment of their story.

Doesn’t logic insist if the first one is good and the second is great, shouldn’t the third spew gold out of the silver screen all over the faces of the audience like the front row at a Gallagher concert? Why is the third time almost never a charm? Below are two lists I’ve put together. The first list is of the 12 greatest sequels to ever light up the screen, in order of awesomeness. The only reason Godfather 2 is at #12 is because I never watch it. The second list is of the 13 worst 3rd sequels to ever lay a steaming pile in your popcorn. Why aren’t they awesome?

Top 12 part 2s, ever:

12. Godfather 2
11. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
10. Superman II
9. Robocop II
8. Toy Story 2
7. Spider-Man 2
6. Evil Dead 2
5. Aliens
4. X2: X-Men United
3. Batman: The Dark Knight
2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

13 Worst part 3s, ever:
(these don’t really need to be put in order do they?)

The Godfather 3
X3
Spiderman 3
Scream 3
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch
Robocop 3
Superman 3
I'll Always know what you did last summer
Highlander 3: The Final Dimension
Look Who's Talking Now
Alien 3
Batman Forever
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

I usually agree with you on many things, but on this I couldn't disagree more. So much of this is wrong in "my opinion" Im to tired to go in length on all of them, but I will debate the one I think you really went wrong with, that being Highlander 3, I found nothing wrong with this movie, it kept with the newer movies and even the show. If you put it next to part two, this movie should win a [frick]ing Oscar. Part two had nothing to do with shit and tried to make them in to aliens and this was like some jail and ah [frick] I don't even want to try and remember it.

Yohon--I agree, part 2 was way worse. I remember not enjoying part 3. I've got a Peoples problem. I don't think it was good enough to NOT be in the bad 3 list. Plus, I needed some 3s. Help me think of one that is more fitting.

Shake--I personally liked Back to the Future three. I used to think part2 was the good one because it actually went into the future. But marty ends up going back into the past and rehashing everything that happened in the first one.

Betty, I think I could answer one of your questions. I think I can because I have thought about it quite a bit. I think the answer is in the design of the second film. Usually, the second film leaves an ending that is designed to encourage another sequel. Unfortunately, we don't always have the same directors, writers, and producers returning. The vision is then lost and the studio is trying to capitalize on the loss with a quick release. Another problem is that they try and fit an over-reaching story arch and try to turn something into an epic that should just be treated as a serial. Some releases would be satisfactory while other are great. Indiana Jones is my favorite example of a successive serial that could theoritically go on forever. They should never number movies for this reason. It leave an impression of a three tiered story arc, and going beyond this seem tedious and ad nauseum.

In the past, creators of these storys have made "bibles" that lists rules to be followed in successive storys. These things are done by the likes of James Cameron or George Lucas that have a love and a vision for their stories. I think that is another way to make great movies sequels to go on forever.

Great points. I really have to say that while this idea has been out there forever it is food for thought. I personally think that a sequel is only as good as the source material in most cases. There are exceptions though to this rule. Most of the time those types of flukes are overlooked.

Still I do love the idea of the strong sequel and crap part III nextquel sucking. (word?) I think that many franchise storylines could have been better served stopping at part II, but that is not the point of movies for studios. It isn't art or story. It is the almighty dollar. They will squeeze that dry old boob until it is nothing but leathery umbrella pouch so long as there are dollars to be made. Is that wrong? Well if good stories are the goal, yes.

I pretty much have to agree with Phinehas. What peeves me most, why does a director/actors even attempt to begin a franchise of any sort without the intention of seeing it through to the end. Chris Nolan is the most recent example of this. Don't get me wrong, Batman Begins and TDK are great, but Nolan acts like he is already tired of the franchise and wants to move on. He should have never started on this franchise if he wasn't immediately willing to see it through to the end. after all, who the [frick] takes a job on such a monumental project not knowing that 3 or more films will come from it. These actors and directors are quick to jump on the boat in order to get their career started or to finally reach the A-list of their profession, but when they get there, they decide they are to good for the very things that are responsible for their fame. Nolan was essentially a nobody before he got on the Batman franchise. Memento was all he had going for him when he started on the Batman franchise, now TDK is one of the best comic films of all time, and he wants to play hardball over doing a third. He may be a brilliant director, but he is a douchebag nonetheless. Nolan is not the first to join this trend, not by a long shot, just one of the most recent examples. What happens if Nolan doesn't return for part 3? Warner is gonna make it anyway, with a new director... and then we are left with the very condition this article is about.

In short, I blame greedy, arrogant directors and actors more than anything for this syndrome. Hugh Jackman is an excellent example of an A-list celebrity who who knows what it was that made him famous, and is adamant about seeing it through til he is too old for the role(save your opinions of the Wolverine movie, like it or not, Jackman did a great job as Wolverine and I don't think anyone will ever be able to fill his shoes as that character) If only all the folks in this business were as eager to pay homage to the roles and films that put them where they are now.

Actually I would have loved it if they would have considered Glen Danzing to play Wolverine. He is a short, stocky, pumped up guy with a shitty attitude and a nasty napoleaon complex who loves comics.

He would have been perfect for Wolverine.

Betty: Gotta respectfully disagree with you about one thing: I have never hated a movie in my life like I hated RoboCop 2. That is the only movie I ever watched where I wanted to see a bunch of terrorists with big guns pop out of nowhere and kill the entire cast of the movie. I'm guessing you put Robocop 2 on the list to contrast with Robocop 3. After part 2, nothing on this world would get me anywhere near a third one! The worst part of this is that the first Robocop movie was and is one of my personal favorites. That movie had this great subtly sarcastic sense of humor about it that the sequel lacked. May we substitute The Road Warrior (the second Mad Max movie, and my favorite of the three)?

The rest of your lists are both damned good. Glad to see someone else disliked the execrable Halloween 3. There's two hours I'll never get back!

Lastly, I think Phinehas and TheMyth did an outstanding job of answering your central question here.

Of course story wise, Robocop 2 didn't even compare to the first but i still enjoyed it thoroughly... hell i even liked the TV show LOL But the third was a mega disapointment.

And what about kick ass movies that never get a sequel like Meteorman!!! LOL

Yohon Kalic: When you said "it kept with the newer movies and even the show." regarding Highlander 3, I think that you may be referring to Highlander: End Game. It has been awhile since I've seen the 3rd Highlander but I don't recall it ever bringing in anything of the television show. End Game, yes. H3 was definitely the better of the four films (none touches the first), it was a throw back to the first one so much that it made Highlander 2, pointless and obsolete in the series. H2 is one of those movies you throw out when you buy the box set.

As for the list the God Father films I personally found boring and its pop culture status undeserved. I'd slot in "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" before any God Father. But that's me.

Short-Round for the win!

WeaponX

Nah, nah I didn't mean like it had things from the show, only that it didn't step over the show or the first movie like the 2nd one did. I liked End Game, but I hated how Connor dies, I get why, he is getting to old to play the part of a guy that doesn't age, but man i love him lol, he was great.

Great, by itself it starts and ends the highlander story, but through the show, you find out there is many gatherings leading down to the true end game.

Has nothing to do with anything, goes into crazy shit, toss it out.

Show is great, also has Connor in the first episode which helps tie it into the movies, find out that there isn't a set amount of immortals and that there are multiple quickening that will lead to the ultimate gathering and the final quickening.

Find out he wasn't the last, and thats why he wasn't an all mighty god and the end of the first one.

Everything has come together, to finale end it all, or so you think, once again it is a false end, and not the true quickening.

Find out the truth about immortals, not that lame truth from part two.

Also go check out my pic on the gi joe article, Its great lol.

INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE!!!! The third in the series and arguably the best of the four.

RETURN OF THE JEDI! Definitely the 2nd best of the six.

DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE! Also 3rd, also arguably the best of the four.

ARMY OF DARKNESS! Definitely the best of the three.

I'm sure there are many more non-turd part threes.

and by the way...

SUPERMAN 2 is probably the most overrated of all comic book movies. Aliens who speak English? Firing Richard Donner? No Brando? Badly looped Hackman dialogue? Clark Kent beat down? Superman Kills? Mind-wipe kiss? Super telekinesis? Multiple Superman holograms? THROWING THE FLIPPIN' "S"????? How can these mistakes ever add up to a good movie? People say Superman 2 was good because it's cool to say that. But that movie aint that great.

Your logic is flawed.

Yohon Kalic--Yeah, I went to change terminator 3 and then I went, Doh!

gibbyblaylock--Superman II definitely has its problems. When I look at all four supes movies, IMO, II is the best, and at least Superman gets to fight super powered villains.

Mr. Jojo--Evil Dead 2, by far.

I think the problem with the concept of the "trilogy" is very simple... Everyone in Hollywood is stupid, and superstitous! I mean, there are plenty of movie franchises that have survived the "deaded #3", and come out alive! (It's a freakin number.)
If you look past that, you really have no excuse in making a bad movie, but that you are indeed not talented enough to make a decent film, and should pack your things and move back to Hoboken!
I think the true underlying problem is that, by the time the movie has reached its third installment, most studios think that said franchise has lost its momentum, and they pass the feature on to someone less talented, in the hopes that they won't destroy it... Sounds like sound logic... right?

I think the Myth is right on this one. To me, it seemed like corporate greed is what always got in the way of the third movie being great. The first movie tests the waters, and if it succeeds, they go all out with the second and they bring back the original personal of the first to capitalize on the success, making what usually amount to the best movie in many series. When the third comes around, the studio heads decide that the movie will be a success no matter what and grab whoever is willing to direct/ act in them. They know X3, Batman Forever and so on will be a success so they are not as adamant about bringing back the original writers/directors/actors. To them, no matter what it will make money so who cares if the qualities not as good, know what I mean? Thus, more often than not, the franchize falls apart at number 3.

We can see this happening now with Nolan. Already the studios view him as replacable, so if he doesnt pull his head out of his ass and realize that, he will ruin what could be the best comicbook movie franchize ever made. Hopefully this wonderful piece of 'art' hes created means more to him than dollar signs or egotistical 'disinterest' in his own work.
Betty
Betty - 6/1/2009, 7:54 PM
Shadowelfz--Man I hope that doesn't happen with Nolan and the Batchise. And I hope they dont try to outdo themselves. Just make a good damn film and it'll outdo itself. Maybe it'll break the curse and awesome trilogies will rain from the sky. Green Lanterns Avengers Deapools Thors Wolverines Invincibles Chaplain Americas all a harmonious trifecta of cinematic genius!

Then trilogies become cliche and the forth film becomes the franchise killer. "Man, to bad that fourth Super Patriot film tanked, quadrilogies never work."
Phinehas
Phinehas - 6/1/2009, 8:34 PM
I also think that Producers ought to maintain the creative control of their projects long after the first film. I personally believe, if Marvel handles their finances well, that they will continue to have successful films. That is because they are themselves the creators of the subjects that they are making and have a vested interest in its success artistically as well as finacially. Whereas studios are money-moving vehicles (not applying a moral or ethical judgment here, they can be useful for this reason), that are not emotionally attached to the product. Which is why you would see a good comic book movie butchered beyond all recognition by the time another writer/producer/director team that was randomly hand picked by Tim Rothman, er, a studio big-wig. They don't even know what it means, other than people seem to like them.
