If you haven't guessed it from the very revealing headliner, then let me carv it out for you. The Hurt Locker won 6 out of the 9 categories it was nominated in, including Best Picture, Writing and Directing. Avatar only won half the figure, in categories: Visual Effects, Art Direction and Cinematography.

So Katherine Bigelow beat her ex-husband besides the rumours about people behind her film ilegally encouraging board members to vote for The Hurt Locker. And those that pointed towards plagiarism. Instead of falling short of these rumours, she prevailed and became the big winner at the 82th Academy Awards.

On a side note fan favourite Star Trek won for Best Makeup. And here is a picture to remind us why that is:

YES! I liked avatar and it was visually amazing but was overhyped and did not deserve the best picture or directing award.

@Boekelaar & Tea: Agreed. Avatar was crap compared to most of the other nominations. I was afraid they'd win a bunch and James Cameron would get an even BIGGER head.

thank god. Avatar was entertaining, but if it wasn't for the visuals, then it would just be another forgettable movie. (it still is forgettable to me). aside from looking nice, there was nothing special about it.

Makes sense to me. That's pretty much what I expected.

I gotta see this Hurt Locker thing. I suspected that it was going to be good but not THIS good. I am astounded that a seemingly pro military film has done this well.

I don't believe The Butt Licker deserved Best Picture nomination..

Kathryn Bigelow looked like she was hyped up on ecstasy and ready to pounce on her producers dong right there on stage!! Lol! What a joke..

shame district 9 & coraline didn't win more.

I didn't see Hurt Locker, but Avatar was highly overrated so I'm glad that James Cameron's ex wife beat him out of it. Ha. Freaking. Ha.

It deserved everything visually that it got, but story was unoriginal, very Al Gore, and had some plot holes.



She's also the first woman to win best director, so that's also cool.

Avatar was unoriginal Misanthrope/tree hugger crap all it had going for it was the visuals. I loved The Hurt Locker it was way better then Avatar. The only reason I went to see Avatar finaly a week ago was because I figured if I was going to ever watch it at all it was going to be on the big screen in 3D.

I really wanted D9 to win something, but just having it nominated is a big thing for the academy. I'm really glad that The Hurt Locker won 6 oscars, including best picture, and best director (the first time in history that a female director has won in that category). All in all, I was pretty satisfied with the oscars this year. Hopefully we'll have another great batch of movies this year.

I too thought Basterds would win Original Screenplay, even though I've only watched the first half hour.

Avatar is a decent movie. Acting, decent. Plot, ripped off (you have to draw the line between unoriginal and ripped off), but still decent I suppose. Character development, lacking and felt rushed. Characters themselves, mediocre-decent. Dialog, clunky at times. But it is damn entertaining, so I guess that counts for something. It is not Best Picture, it is a decent film.

If I had the power to give one of the nominees BP, I'd give it to District 9. I love The Hurt Locker, and I love D9, but D9 just came out of f*cking nowhere and blew me away. I was far more emotionally invested in it than I was for Avatar. I actually cared about what happened to Wikus, Christopher, and his son, whereas I really didn't give a damn when Worthington or even Weaver was dying.

The biggest thing that separates Avatar from THL and D9 for me is that again, I was emotionally invested in the latter 2. I truly, honestly cared about what happened to the soldiers, Wikus, and the 2 Prawns. D9 especially, I don't know what happened, but that movie just struck every single right chord. Honestly, it's been a long time since I've been emotionally charged like that for a film. Avatar, on the other hand, just felt kind of mechanical in a sense.

I really need to see Basterds. Just couldn't get into it before. But I'm going to force myself, one of these days.

well then, no offense, but your logic is flawed, lol. just because a lot of people see a movie, DOES NOT make it good. look at Ghost Rider. it was number one in the box office the opening weekend it was out. they said they were going to make a sequel that same weekend, based solely on the money it made. go figure, here we are today, and the VAST majority of people that saw Ghost Rider thought it was crap. (and rightly so)

people don't know if a movie will be good before they see it, so the money they spend to go see a movie, has no bearing at all on whether they liked it or not. and also, Hurt Locker was only in VERY select cities when it was in theatres. are you telling me that because it didn't make a lot of money, that means it wasn't as good as Avatar?? please...
