Tremors 5... Coming Soon?

Tremors 5... Coming Soon?

They say there's nothing new under the sun, but could something new be gestating under the ground? 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the cult classic creature-feature Tremors, and we may finally be in store for another sequel to help celebrate the milestone!

While Tremors was released to only moderate success during its theatrical run in 1990, the S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock scribed, Ron Underwod directed film that starred Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Michael Gross was succesful enough on VHS to warrant the release of two direct-to-video sequels, a direct-to-video prequel, and a short lived television series that ran on the SyFy (then Sci-Fi) Channel in 2003 for 13 episodes.

The giant, prehistoric worms and their always-mutating offspring may finally be making a comeback. After a decade of development hell it seems like the long-rumored fifth film in the Stampede Entertainment saga may actually become a reality, based on hints being dropped by franchise mainstay Michael Gross (Burt Gummer in the first three films and the television series and Hiram Gummer, Burt's great-grandfather, in the fourth film).

Back in July director Don Michael Paul seemingly confirmed involvement in a Tremors film, stating the following in a now-deleted blog post:

After I finish up 'Company Of Heroes: The Fourth Reich' I will be headed to Johannesburg, South Africa to reboot the 'Tremors' franchise for Universal. Big year ahead and I’m excited to keep it going with the support of all you genre movie lovers out there.

When the quote hit the internet it appeared to come out of nowhere. Don Michael Paul has no previous involvement with the series. Just a few days ago, however, Michael Gross updated his Facebook page with this image:

THE POOP SCOOP. Day one on location in South Africa I was greeted by a huge pile of crap outside my dressing room trailer, which begs the question: was it a zebra, a wildebeest, or just another disgruntled movie critic? :0)

According to Gross' update, it appears that he is filming an as-of-yet unannounced film in the very country that director Don Michael Paul is apparently rebooting the Tremors franchise in. Some of the comments that Gross made below his picture further deepen the connection to a potential Tremors film.

One Facebook user speculated "Tremors," which prompted Gross to respond with a comment paying homage to his character Burt's paranoia and mistrust of the government:

Can neither confirm nor deny, as the US Government might be listening in.

Another Facebook user asked "The Zebra and Wildebeest are civilized... which leaves..... ?" Gross' answer referenced the precambrian origins of the Graboid creature as established in Tremors 2: Aftershocks:

Hmmm... something precambrian?

Finally, Gross made a comment of his own which appears to hint at Universal Studios, the production company behind all of the previous Tremors films:

I believe I have received more comments on this subject than from almost any other posting. Obviously this is a subject of universal interest! :o )

Given Michael Gross' current location and the nature of his comments, it seems almost obvious that something Tremors related is in the pipeline. It should only be a matter of time before Universal Studios comes out and makes an official announcement. Until then, stay tuned and stay off the ground!

I saw the first three movies. I haven't seen the fourth one.

I also watched the Tremors TV show. Lol! Yes, there was actually a show:

That's the poster for the show?! Legit?!

Oh my God! LMAO XD

@TheManFromMars LOL! What did you expect? It aired on the Syfy channel.

Even the worm on the DVD cover looks cheap:

@TheManFromMars I believe that poster was used for the iTunes release of the show. I don't think it was around when the show was being promoted on air.

Anyways, yeah, a lot of people haven't seen the sequels, which is pretty understandable. They slipped under a lot of people's radar, even if they liked the first one. If you are into genre films like this I would recommend at least giving them a try though. The cast in each one is surprisingly charismatic and fun to watch, and the creature effects in the second and forth are top-notch. The third dropped the ball a bit in the effects department in that it was forced to utilize very sub-par CGI as a result of an extremely short production.

@mgeoff88 Aye, that DVD cover is pretty bad as well. Really poor Photoshop work and blatant disregard for some of the defining traits of the creatures (especially the lack of eyes).

I had no idea 2-4 existed. Loved the first one though.

I thought this was going to be a straight-to-DVD deal, but it is being reported that this reboot will be released in theaters.

@bstnsx Yah, the person who designed the cover obviously didn't know what a graboid looks like.

@mgeoff88 I guess it is somewhat forgivable because the movie covers don't look particularly representative of the creatures either, but they've never been that bad. Maybe there were trying to capture the concept of the Mixmaster that was so prevalent in the show? I don't know. Poorly made either way.

It would be interesting if this was released in theaters, but I highly doubt that they're even considering that as a possibility to be honest. The director seems to have only done DTV stuff, and Tremors hasn't been a theatrical property since 1990. I just hope they stick to primarily practical effects and only use CGI when necessary, like the second and fourth films.

@bstnsx I honestly don't remember the TV show that much.

You're right. I read on another site that this is going to be a straight-to-DVD release, which makes a lot more sense.

I wouldn't mind if they rebooted franchise and released it in theaters.

@ManCalledSting Reboot is kind of a vague term with anything. It could mean anything from remake to sequel/spinoff with a different premise or in new hands. This seems to be going for the latter version.

Man, y'all suck. But "Tremors" is a cult franchise anyway, so the fact that people don't know about any of the other, non-theatrical films isn't surprising. However, I've been a "Tremie" ever since the third one came out in 2001. I used to think it was the best thing ever. Unfortunately, a lot of the magic of the series has worn off for me (due to frequent, repeat viewings), but that nostalgia is still there, so I'm definitely interested.

Also, Michael Gross was already awesome (his fairly recent appearance on "Anger Management" was great), but these comments he made just further cement the fact.
