Hello Everyone, I have been a long standing dedicated reader of CBM and I have the pleasure today of creating my first editorial. My name is Bradley Hardwood and I am also a member of CAFCAT known as "The Community Alliance of Film Critics". As you should know I have been highly educated in the art of film making for many years. As such I have knowledge to expand upon many topics in this area. One of which is a quick topic I have been reading a lot lately concerning the state of Comic Book Films today. That topic is usually concerning the film's own rating.
As we know as such the rating system is divided into many different categories. As we also know there is a span of many different systems across countries making it not so easy to determine the actual format. Is being concerned about a films' own rating our major worries in terms of the movie? In my case in point no not at all. There are many other factors to look at before making a judgement based on something so much so as a numerical rating which is considered as a variable point. I think so much so many people at forgetting there is also a strong core in a movie which evolves directly from the script.
You can have a good known character, high rating, bad script, and a not so well received film. Then a bad character, high rating, good script, and in the end turns out to be more received in terms by critics alike. Without a script that supports and structures the entire weight of the film you are left with nothing. Not only the script but the second highlight to consider is the direction of the film itself. What has influenced the director and how is he handling everything from the scenes to the movement.
Having blood and extreme violence does not mean anything to a story at all unless it has a decent block to build upon those subjects. That is where many people miss the point in terms of judging a movie. Even having a cast of great talented actors doesn't always spell out success, in this case this year's major film failure Movie 43. A project years in the making that never seemed to gain a strong foot hold.
As I have said we need to look at things more in depth other than taking the easy course of action. Just words for thought might I add.
What if the violence is needed to stay in tune to a specific tone of a character or material as many would say. You can have war films that are PG-13 it doesn't mean all the material is going to be limited or watered down at least in terms it still gets out a message of details in including the real facts of matter. In terms I am trying to describe, we live in a society today were we are being plagued with more and more controversies around us. Regarding this word "controversy" in form of film history it has been around forever. Doesn't mean we need to start a riot and burn those bridges quickly. It means we need to use our mind more often than being biased upon words. It is not something philosophical but something more that we can all understand.
For me as long as the whole meaning and understanding is still present in a film in a form of a good scripture or acting, the main message of the topic would still be clear. Violence does not solve everything nor it is the answer to the world's problems today.
