The Dark Knight, perfect or not perfect?

Editorial Opinion

Very recently, we all received a massive lecture on how imperfect The Dark Knight was. It showed how many editorial flaws it contained and it was not shy to portray how much it lacked in “Fridge Logics”. It even predicted the future, dissecting the so called flaws portrayed in The Dark Knight Rises prologue without allowing the rest of the film to play out so it could explain itself.

Apart from all the finger pointing that was going on in the article, I do believe there were some facts and not just opinions.

For instance, a word that keeps being dropped when describing the tone of Nolan’s batman films is “realistic”. From previous comments, I’ve seen that this word is like a grenade. I believe we should all now call for a stoppage on the use of this word when describing any of Nolan’s batman films. I really don’t blame people for using it; I myself use this word very often but it’s only because I, like many people, possess a small vocabulary.

I've also come to understand that it is mighty difficult to describe Nolan’s batman without using this word. If anyone can come up with a better word, I urge people to switch to that but until then, be cautious when describing the tone of Nolan‘s batman films.

Secondly, The Dark Knight is in no way, shape or form perfect in the literal sense because no film is perfect in the literal sense. It is neither the greatest Superhero film of all time because that is, after all, one's own personal opinion. If we really want to answer that question, then let us nominate our own cbm and do a poll to see which wins and, once and for all, settle the most heated question on this website.

All films have flaws and yet some achieve critical acclaim. Some even get nominated for major awards and are also considered perfect. But as much as that might look good for a movie, it’s really all about the legacy it leaves behind and the influences it has on people.

An example would be Apocalypse Now. It is recognized by Movie Mistakes as topping their list for most flaws committed by a film and yet it became one of the best films ever produced. It is frequently cited as one of the best films of all time and crafted by a director who gets praised constantly by critics and fan boys, just like another director we all know.

I would also urge people who use the word perfect to be cautious in future conversations. When you use this word, let others know exactly what you mean, it being something you appreciate and not meaning that it literally is flawless.

Thirdly, The Dark Knight Rises and all the other comic book films that are coming out this year are worth going overly crazy for. Because boys, those wet dreams we’ve all been having for years are finally coming true. Not even the possibility of a ménage à trois can make us give up our movie tickets… (Well, maybe; I have to think about that one again.)

Even comic book movies that have already been made should be praised because for every one of them that was produced, there is hope for more to come. And for every one of them that failed, well, that’s for the studios to learn from their mistakes and for us to hope they did.

Overall, no comic book film should have its total value lowered because of its editorial and “Fridge Logics” flaws. Truth be told, if it were all up to just logic, no comic book film would make sense. NOT ONE. Not even porn should make sense but that’s a whole other argument for a whole other article in a whole other website. I believe that applies to all genres of films except maybe bio films and documentaries.

If we’re going to critique a comic book film, lets critique its total absence of the source material, how little action there was (or anything along those lines) but not by their logical sense because they are not supposed to make logical sense. The same applies to the editing flaws it had but I already made my point on that one.

Specifically, if we’re going to critique Nolan’s batman, let’s talk about Bale’s voice or why the hell he is using the title twice or things along the lines what I mentioned before.

Well this is an article and the name of this article is nameless and you have now reached the end of this article and this was my “ok, enough with that shit.” Black Keys reference.

I would venture a guess that most of the "hate" on Nolan's Bat films has nothing to do with the films, Batman or Nolan. Most of it is due to the fanatical, cult following of Nolan's fans, who seem so insistent on convincing everybody else that these films are the best thing since....air. For some reason, it appears that many Nolanites for lack of a better term, have the notion in their head that all other films should cease production because they can never surpass these films.

They are fantastic films without a doubt. They are not the best thing to ever grace the screen. And it's annoying as all Hell to have to listen to TDK this or TDK that in the middle of every single conversation about every other film. Get over it. Move on. Enjoy something else. Or, at the very least, allow everybody else to do so.

Great point tea. They even rage against Burtons Batman which I like.

I think Hawks just owned the comment thread.

I rewatched The Dark Knight last night, and while it's still my favorite CBM to date, I can see a handful of things that could've been fixed. There's the whole placing-the-bombs-on-the-boats ordeal, which I think could've been left out, also Bats' voice could've been a bit clearer. Take those away and it's a rather perfect film.

@Alexandre...I'm offering legit criticism here. Not trying to be an ass. Your ability to write could be improved. Ever hear of a run-on sentence? This article is full of them. Your syntax is not good either. My biggest piece of advice would be proof-read your articles...multiple times if necessary.

I'm neither a "Nolanite" nor a "Marvelite." I can actually accept that a film is either good or bad. Nolans films are good films, but he is not the be-all, end-all of film making. Simple as that. There are many films out there that are better than his. Simple as that

Preferred Batman Begins to be honest.
It wasn't perfect but you didn't notice on first look because of Ledgers barnstorming performance.

Also the tumbler went out like a biatch.

Nolan's a great film maker, and successfully revived the Batman franchise. He did it with reverence for the character in a unique and realistic way.

I admire him greatly, but he's just one of others who also succeeded in making very good CBM's.
I'm thinking of Kenneth Branaugh and Jon Favreau.

@Alexandre, I agree with you that you shouldn't write as if speaking to a group of college professors. However, you should write in order to convey your point regardless of who the audience happens to be.

Hawks just owned everybody. Nolan's a great filmmaker (probably the best commercial director around at the minute imo) but his Batman movies aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread. They're the best Batman adaptation yet though, no doubt about it. Burton's Batman movies sucked.

-The Joker did not kill Bruce's parents.
-Alfred would not let Vicki into the Batcave
-Batman doensn't kill.
-The Penguin wasn't a fat mutant who eats cold fish.
-Catwoman wasn't licked back to life by magical cats.

Those reasons alone are enough to hate those movies!

@MovieMaster "Catwoman wasn't licked back to life by magical cats."

Hahaha! I never thought about it that way, but that's pretty much exactly what happened.

Anyway, I love my Nolan Batman movies. TDK is easily in contention for my favorite film ever. That said, I agree with Hawks that Nolanites get annoying, especially when they try to rip on Marvel movies. Marvel fanboys do the same, but there's a degree of pretentiousness to the Nolanites.

Dude, is it just me or does this have a "I wish we could all get along like we used to in middle school" Mean girls vibe?

Do you want us to bake cakes with rainbows and smiles in them too?

Since Alexandre brought up the subject of Bale's much maligned Dark Knight voice, I have to say it never bothered me. Is it a stretch to say Bruce thinks someone may recognize him if he talked normally?

"I come in close on the one who looks the strongest--THROW HIM A GROWL I'VE BROUGHT ALL THE WAY FROM AFRICA---" ---BATMAN: YEAR ONE Frank Miller (1986)

Perhaps this is a gutteral thing Bruce learned in his worldly travels pre-Batman to disarm those in this presence. I always thought so. Anyway, just food for thought...!

@WildCard Nothing wrong with wanting people to get along. I personally don't see how people on here enjoy arguing.
WildCard
WildCard - 2/10/2012, 7:33 AM
@fedup

Agreeably, some people just argue for the sake of arguing. Others just take themselves and everything else way too seriously and can't take a joke. But there's arguing nonetheless.

@ErikMonroe

I, too, have never had an issue with Bale's choice of voice. Were he to deal with people who can recognize him by voice alone, then he'd pretty much be screwed. It's a smart tactic, even though it annoys some. And I wouldn't go so far as saying it's a stretch to suggest that's the reasoning behind his voice. What you also suggested in terms of using it as a way to disarm people seems far more likely, though, and much more interesting when further developing his character. Especially since it's a voice that kind of throws people off, so it makes sense.

DEADPOOL approves.....

You hit the target with what you said.

Nolanites seem to have this outerworldly belief that the Nolan-CBM Formula is the only vision that constitutes for a good CBM. That's what the annoying factor with the Nolanites are. And Favreau, Leterrier, Branaugh, and Johnston have shown us excellence and Whedon is gonna is gonna give us the history setting CBM in the form of the Avengers.
